Kath Scarlet paintjob

By Rhinoviru3, in X-Wing

I love it, greettings.

Thanks and thanks!

Good to be here. I spend a lot of time chatting on the UK Fb pages but saw some great posts that linked me to here while researching ship schemes... in particlula the OPs lovely grey/red scheme and i totally agree with the OP that it is better than the white most people use.

Throwing my keys into the pot:

My advice for people painting white is to use an off white, stonewall grey here, and only use the pure colour for the edge highlight.

Personally I like my white/red scheme. I s'pose horses for courses :D

That's very nicely done indeed. Kudos sir.

Like I say i'm not a great fan of 'rebel white' on this ship but i think your off white looks excellent.

I think your's looks like Kaths' just had a respray, mine looks like the same ship several months and battles later :)

Cheers boss :D

I wanted "box fresh" and to keep the scheme comparible to my Slave 1, which is untouched.

Good call. I struggled to keep mine looking as 'matt' as the FFG factory paints but found the 50/50 wash helped tone it all down. When it was factory fresh mine just didnt look like it was playing the same game!

Slim, that looks very crisp and clean. Good job.

This is mine before i 'grimed' it. As you can see it looked really shiny.

Also once given the 'used future' look i put it against the stock facotry slave 1, i really needed to grime mine as it didnt fit before but your's clearly does.

I might just invest in some more of a matt finish varnish.

'clean' (with a few blast marks

and finished next to slave 1

I think my wash before painting helps my model, I've got the panel lines that yours seems to be missing pre-wash. I also benefit from the matt finish of the paints as I haven't varnished mine and the surface finish is the same as my other Slave.

I was going to wash it originally but when it was finished I felt a wash may be a step too far, ruining my hard work.

It takes confidence to wash a freshly painted model of this size.

;-)

I was worried about that too so i made it super thin and had a pot of clean cold water handy so if it looked gash i could just rinse it right off but it came out ok.

I'm using Foundry Paint System, i find that usually give super coverage, its like old GW paints when they were good (made by the same people who used to make GWs paint in the 80s i believe), huge pots that dont dry up about half the price of GW paint. I use GW inks though as foundry only do three and they are pants.

The downside is that foundry paint is slighly more 'shiny' than citadel. I've got a lot of Vallejo paint but that is so matt its almost chalky and if you dont varnish then it rubs off on your fingers!

I use army painter washes, top notch :D Added bonus is that they taste much better than the GW washes....ahem!
