PS9 Pilots

By jedi moose, in X-Wing

I can't believe I just realized this. There are only 4 PS9 Pilots in this game currently. Its one of those things that I kind of knew, but didn't really know. You know? I guess I just never stopped to count. I mean, I was aware that not every ship had a PS9 pilot, but I never actually considered how rare PS9 is. And I think it's awesome! Way to go FFG. Wedge, Vader, Soontir and Han should be the best Pilots in the game as they are probably the best pilot's in the Star Wars universe. That's not saying that Luke, Tycho, Boba, etc aren't great pilots. But I think it's great that FFG has kept this pool of elite pilots a small one and hasn't succumbed to the desire to make pilot's more elite then they are supposed to be. For Example: It would have been easy for them to say "Luke Skywalker should be PS9 because he is Luke Skywalker and he can use the force". In the Star Wars universe, everyone, Luke included, has to acknowledge that Wedge Antilles is the best pilot to ever sit in an X-wing cockpit. It's a small thing I guess but it just makes me love this game even more and appreciate the hard work FFG puts in to keeping this game real. And what is more I think that all of the PS9 pilots have abilities that compliment their elite status

Now, having said all of that, is there any pilot you can think of that we might see in future waves or "Aces" type reprints who deserves PS9 elite status?

I could see Corran being PS9 (after all, he's Corellian!), but my guess is that they'll keep him at PS8. I don't know too much about the rest of the EU, but I will point out that there's t no more being added from Imp Aces, the transport or W4.

Lt. Kettch (although he should be the first 10)

In all seriousness, Kell Tainer may be a candidate for 9 status. He was brilliant once he got over his performance anxiety.

Horn actually could be a 9, considering some of the maneuvering he did in the novels (grabbing a space station with the tractor beam on a TIE Defender in order to do what basically amounted to a 0 k-turn is a prime example........ during his first time flying one).

Yep, we haven't seen a PS9 since wave 2. And Corran was my first thought. But I wonder if they would throw a 2nd PS9 pilot in for X-wings, and I don't want to see Corran in any other ship (even though headhunter could technically work based on that 1 battle for Coruscant).

If they ever do Chiss Clawcraft I would think Jag Fel could be PS9

In I, Jedi, Corran Horn, while undercover, has a 1 on 1 dogfight vs Tycho and repeatedly makes the point that only Corran's force sensitivity allowed him to escape alive. Even while Corran is reading Tycho's mind, Tycho consistantly counters and outmaneuvers Corran. Since Tycho is PS8, I would be surprised if they printed a Corran Horn above PS7.

I suppose if they follow the E-wing down the EU rabbit hole we'll have Jag Fel at some point, who seems like a 9 to me. And while Marek Steele probably shouldn't be a 9, he should definitely get a bit more love.

I have not read that, so I can't comment on those specifics. But I would think Tycho being in a relatively new A wing design, flying during the beginning of his career, wouldn't be as effective as Tycho vs. Horn several years later, in a more preferred craft. As such, I would expect Tycho to have a higher PS in that engagement. Plus, you can't discount the force sensitivity from his pilot skill.

I think Tycho should/could have been PS9. According to Wedge Tycho is at least as good of a pilot. Although that may have been modesty on Wedge's part

Seconded. Or rather, thirded, I suppose.

If they ever do the prequels, Jango Fett deserves a 9, and Anakin Skywalker already has it (sort of).

That's about it, though. Luke, Tycho, and Boba all at 8 sets the bar awful high. I prefer it this way.

And I just pointed this out in another thread too, but of the four currently existing PS 9 pilots, two are career military, three are Corellian, while only one is Force-Sensitive.

Also, all four are related, now that Jag and Jaina finally got married.

EDIT: And as to Corran Horn, it's pretty clear that Force-Sensitivity is reflected more in the special ability and Elite Pilot Talent than in the Pilot Skill. Luke is only an 8.

The thing that scares me about the EU bit is that I just don't want those horrible Solo kids in this awesome game!

Also, at what point do they have to start doing new X-wing types if they go that far forward?

So going with that, perhaps he would be an 8, but gains an extra evade die when not stressed, or something like that, based on that specific book passage

I agree with the OP - the fact that only 4 of pilots gets to an awesome skill level of 9 is great! And honestly, I see no other pilot, be it Wraith, Rogue, 181st or any other elit unit pilot getting into that tier.

Those four are clearly marked as best pilots in the galaxy, period. Even Jagged Fel would seem odd in their company. The fact that they're 3/4 Corellians and 1/4 Force Sensitive is by no mean their distinctive feature.

From what has been spoiled Wes Janson, another notable Rogue will probably be PS7, so I don't see any new pilots rising to 9 anytime soon. And that's the way it should stay :)

Well keep in Mind that A-wings are harder to fly in general and Tycho is noted in Wookiepedia to specifically prefer X-wings. Those two factors probably lower his effective skill in the A.

Edit: Also I agree that it's great the pilot skill 9 is an exclusive club and that even good pilots like Lando and Chewie only hit 7 and 5 respectively. Though if I have to explain to one more casual fan why "some random redshirt"(Wedge) is better than Luke I will force choke myself.

@ the spoiler they aren't really all related only through marriage
