kath scarlet plus gunner question?

By Krynn007, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Is it possible for Kath to give 2 stress tokens to one ship if the opponent cancels or a crit from each attack? One from the primary and another from using gunner?

Yep, that works.

Heck, if she shoots Cluster Missiles with a Gunner on board, it's theoretically possible for her to deal 3 stress tokens.
This is too unlikely to consider Clusters at all, though.

Rather than start a brand new topic, I searched and found this one. ^_^

After running a list with Kath + Gunner earlier today, I ran into this question. We played it as stated above, with Kath rolling a crit, having it canceled by an A-Wing, then re-rolling due to gunner with another critical, canceled again, resulting in two stress tokens.

Glad we did it right. ^^

My next question regarding this was wondering if this is a viable way to use Kath+Gunner and focus tokens.

Examples:

Kath has a focus. Rookie has a focus.

Kath rolls a (regular hit) and an two (eyeballs). Rookie rolls one (eyeball).

Can Kath choose to NOT use her focus to let the Rookie decide to focus his way out, thus allowing for a reroll because of gunner?

(I am assuming yes, but wanted to make sure.)

**edit** originally posted that rookie didn't roll any eyeballs. Fixed!

I believe token spending is always optional.

Although I'm not sure what you mean about the Rookie "focusing out," since you said he rolled blanks.

Gotcha! Thanks!

According to your description above, this is what I understand your setup to be prior to any dice rolls.

1. Kath with a Focus token

2. Rookie with a Focus token

Then the following series of events takes place

1. Kath rolls 1 <Hit> and 2 <Focus> results.

2. Rookie rolls all <Blank> results

Given the above series of events, these are your options.

Kath must choose to either use her Focus token or not PRIOR to the Rookie rolling defense dice. This is detailed in the combat section of the rulebook, where modifying the attack dice takes place prior to the defender rolling any defense dice.

Regarding the Rookie using their Focus token, they could, but since the Rookie's defense dice are all blank, it wouldn't change the result at all.

Finally, given the above scenario, Kath rolled at least one hit that got through due to the Rookie's blank results, therefore Gunner doesn't trigger since the attack didn't miss.

Hope this helps.

**EDIT**

Clearly took too long to write up this bit, as you've already received a response at this point.

Just to put a rules bow on top... Page 11:

If the attacker has a focus token, he may...

Whoops! Well, I'm glad you did. You caught a mistake in my post that I didn't, so 10 points to you, sir, for reading my post better than I did!

I meant to type that the rookie rolled one (eyeball) but apparently forgot to completely.

If he hadn't rolled an eyeball, his focus would have been worthless, this making the "sneaky gunner" obsolete. Got it. Thanks for spotting my mistake so other people don't get confused!

You do not have to use a token. It's up to you.

More importantly, why did rookie roll his green dice before Kath decided about using focus?

According to page 10 of the rulebook attack dice are modified prior to rolling defense dice.
