Interest Check: EotE PbP

By MosesofWar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Greetings all! I'm throwing this up as an interest check for a PbP game (obviously by the title). I've been running a large scale PbP over on RPOL that a couple of you are a part of. However, I've been crafting up an adventure for a smaller group of players, if I can get a decent level of interest.

The concept of this game is a deep cover Imperial Special Forces team that navigates through the Underworld; it's basically one of those 'how far would you go' to complete your mission as the group is going to be placed at odds with the law's they are tasked to uphold. This game will be conveyed through the eyes of loyal Imperial soldiers as PCs - you'd create your PC, but they'd be Imperials, not seedy underworld denizens.

This game would take place in the early days of the Empire, mainly dealing with things such as Order 66 and wiping the memories of the Republic away.

Any takers? I'm looking to run this one on Roleplayinggames.net and I'm willing to field answers to questions if you've got um.

Sounds like fun. I have actually signed up for a few PbP games but they have yet to happen...

On to the questions:

Any race? or must be human?

Because we will be Imperial Soldiers, does that mean we do not pick a career?

Do we start with gear or have to buy it?

So the thought process would be that Imperials will be Humans, Chiss, and Zeltron. I'd like to keep the races with the understanding of Imperial prejudices. Human centric, but we do know that the other two were active in the Empire hierarchy, however only Humans realistically were trusted and promoted. I'd possibly allow Droids and Zabrak, but Empire typically treated them with higher prejudice, with Droids outright. I'd shy away from allowing species that the Empire wouldn't allow to be within their ranks at the time of formation. While the PCs won't be Stormtroopers, they'd still be considered an elite unit.

You'd still pick career's and specializations as normal, but of course you'd need a back-story that fits the career specialization. I'd like to have a group with one PC per Career, basically to get that sense of an balanced 'OPs' team. Creative thoughts on how the incorporate a career and specialization are fine - like thinking of a Politico in a Military sense (Interrogation Specialist?).

And as soldiers, you'll have a better breadth of item selection at chargen, as well as access to Imperial vehicles; my thought process is that the group would be stationed on a Star Destroyer, but be given a smaller vessel for running missions. You'll be given a 'budget' for your mission and functionally be allowed to swap out weapons and armor while within the Star Destroyer. You'll be relegated to standard issue Imperial gear, but finding more 'rare' items will be allowed. The the OPs team would be allowed a greater degree of freedom as they are an 'Infiltration' unit, trying to blend in within the Underworld trying to wipe out opposition hiding in the Galaxy.

I will say that this game will be heavy on narration and story-telling, but it'll let you play as the 'bad guys'.

Good luck with this Moses! I don't have the time to apply, but sincerely hope it goes well - roleplayinggames.net needs more Star Wars, and more good GMs to keep it fresh and awesome.

I'd love to try playing as an Imperial.

One question: will careers/specializations from AoR be allowed? They have more of a military theme to them than Eote.

What would be the posting rules for how often, how elaborate, etc. Never done a PbP but willing to give it a shot!

I don't have AoR so at the current moment I'd have to say no until I got my hands on the book. I do want to keep the tone of Edge, with the group, while being Imperial soldiers, still acting heavily in the underground of the Galaxy. The OPs team will be more akin to undercover police officers than like Navy SEALs, investigating leads and tracking down dissidents while navigating the intricacies of the Underworld. I guess a good comparison would be like SPECTREs from Mass Effect... Basically, you're Imperial SPECTREs, but a little more hushed and deep undercover.

Once every 3 - 4 days would be fine. I take quality over quantity, but giving solid narration is key in PbP, you'll want to write more as well as be descriptive because you can. I'm willing to work with players on developing narrative presence as well; PbP is my preferred style of RPing and this system is excellent for it :).

A-friggin'-men!

I guess you make a good point Seiito - Really there were only a handful of Chiss in known space prior to the ABY period. Admiral Thrawn being the one biggie and I believe there was a Rebel pilot in the EU? Two Chiss isn't many - I'd only one PC to be a Chiss if they'd like, but I'd need to have a discussion with them prior to the game beginning to relay how the reactions of the PCs, Imperial Hierarchy and NPCs in the game would treat a Chiss character, as it might not be exactly pleasant.

I guess I'd like to know a little more about what you mean with 'Actioney bits'? If you mean combat, typically people do post more often during that time. If you mean anything else, you'll have to let me know and I'll be happy to go in more depth for you.

I will say, I'd probably take the model that ShakesperianSolider uses with his PbP game, which institutes a mandatory post once every 72 hours. If a player misses that deadline three times without prior notice, or good reason, the character becomes NPCed and the player is removed from the game.

May seem harsh, but it keeps the game activity, and prevents it from stalling. And if you're up front about it beforehand, then they xan decide for themselves whether they can realistically meet the deadlines.

We're still looking for another player or two.. Any interest?

I am willing to play as well. Are the new books allowed or just the CRB?

I'd be willing to allow the new books if you can share the info with me. I'm going to allow some stuff from AoR.. I'll invite you to the private convo since I know what you're capable of from an RP perspective being a part of Galactic Perils. Perhaps you can give the other players insight into what to expect from me as well :).
