Definition of the term alpha strike

By Krynn007, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just wondering what the term alpha strike means, I see it talk about on here.

I assume it is something like a rush on on your opponent.

Any tips or food suggestion on what makes a good alpha strike team?

An alpha strike is a strong opening attack, usually achieved through missiles and torpedos. It also has the connotation that it is much stronger than follow up attacks. A squad of A-wings with missiles is a great example. One big hit (the alpha strike). It's high-risk, high-reward.

It depends on the game, and/or context. In this game means what the above post said.

In other games, like for example Mechwarrior Online, means 'Firing with all your weapons simultaneously on your target' (which is not usually advisable, due to heat/ammo management).

In general terms, it could mean something like "Firing with your maximum available firepower, concentrating damage and/or causing as much damage as you can on key targets".

Alpha just means "first" in this context, being that Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Kind of like how you do "alpha testing" on a program, that is the first round of testing. Therefore an Alpha Strike is your first attack. Since sometimes in X- wing a ship won't get more than 1 good attack this is when you would unload your heavy hitting attacks to try and cripple your opponent.

Yea I always took it to mean the first engagement, which is the most important one since often most, if not all the ships on both sides are getting a shot in, as oppossed to later rounds once everyone starts going different directions.

When you're talking about an Alpha Strike Fleet, you're looking at one with lots of missiles/torpedoes, one per ship, that intends to cripple the enemy fleet with the initial attack so that your ships now have the advantage.

Example: 5x Scimitar Squadron Pilots with Concussion Missiles.
5 naked bombers don't have that much firepower, although they are hardy little things. Going up against, say, 4 X-Wings, 5 Bombers are likely going to lose.
They spend 20 points on purchasing missiles so that they can reduce the 4 X-Wings to hopefully 2, or 2 and one that's severely wounded, giving the bombers a numbers advantage.

A Wave 4 version is going to be 6 Bandit Squadron Pilots, 4 with Assault Missiles and 2 with Concussions.

Yeah the short version is that an alpha strike literally just means "your first strike."
In the context of the game it refers to trying to weight your squad loadout with heavy hitting, often disposable weapons like torpedoes and missiles, so that you do as much damage to the enemy as possible right at the start of the game, attempting to get them on the defensive and at a disadvantage in terms of healthy ships.

Contextually, an "Alpha Strike" means to sacrifice long term advantage in order to achieve a single devastating blow. This tends to be the very first shot, which is how the term got started, but in general usage could refer to an attack performed at any point in the game that would leave your own forces weakened afterwards.

In X-Wing, this tends to mean ships with expendable munitions firing them all off on the first pass. The long term trade off is that you will dramatically reduce the number of ships you can field by spending points on weapons that only fire once, and using them all at the first opportunity. If you fire 4 torpedoes, you only have 86 points remaining on the table at most, so you have put yourself at a disadvantage long term in an attempt to front load damage. If your Alpha strike fails to pay dividends, you are in trouble.

The other situation in X-Wing where this can occur is the use of focus with high PS ships. For example, if a high PS swarm were to fly into very close range of an opponent, then take and use focus offensively. The goal of this is to deal enough damage to mitigate the dramatic loss of defense.
