Damage cards - Multiple core sets and large battles

By civviewarrior20, in X-Wing Rules Questions

How have people been handling larger battles where the amount of damag cards currently in play be more than those provided in one core set box?

I have on the forums that mixing damage decks can be a bad idea but wanted to get peoples impression.

the current idea is to never mix decks, give either side their own deck and no sharing the cards between side. Even in tournies it goes the same way,

You do not want to mix together multiples of the 33 card damage deck.
The reason for this is that it increases the odds of drawing multiples of a single crit.
Drawing 7 Direct Hit's is highly unlikely when you're playing with one deck (which only has 7), but if you've shuffled 3 together, the odds are far higher.

This is how we get skeletons.

Also remember that once a ship is destroyed that the damage cards are supposed to be placed face up in a discard pile and that discard card pile is reshuffled if the damage deck is depleted.

Here's my recommendation for really large games. Keep both decks separate. Put sleeves on one deck and use this first. Deal damage as necessary from here. When this deck runs out, use the unsleeved deck to hand out additional damage.

This has a number of advantages.

First, you keep the crit type ratio the same (so you don't pull 14 consecutive Direct Hits for example). The game is balanced around the existing crit ratio and the moment you put two decks together you ruin that ratio after a couple cards are pulled.

Second, cleanup is super easy. That way you don't end up having to go through every card to make sure you didn't contaminate your deck.

Third, it acts as a good way to break up the game a bit. You know when the first deck is gone that 33 damage cards have been dealt. If you know how many you hull you started with, it gives you a good idea of how much more your force can take.

Not really. If the first crit is a direct hit, then the chances of drawing another is 6/32 = 18.75%

If you mixed 3 decks, then the same situation would mean there was a 20/98 = 20.4%

It does make a difference, but I don't think a 1.5% shift is "far higher".

Besides having one deck per side? You probably shouldn't need any more damage cards but I guess it depends on what you are considering a "larger battle." I mean you could have eight Y-Wings on a side all one card away from being destroyed and still have that one card left in the deck. I don't see that as a likely scenario and like Lappenlocker mentions once/if the deck is all drawn you just reshuffle the pile of cards that come from destroyed ships or have otherwise been discarded.

In the unlikely event that there are no Damage cards remaining in the deck or discard pile, change all critical results rolled to hit results. Use a suitable replacement to track additional damage until the deck is replenished.

Remember once a ship is destroyed the rules state you remove the damage cards and place them into a discard pile next to the damage deck.

Or you can make yourown rules up at home.

If you're worried about running out of cards just use something else as "hit" damage unless/until you need to see a "face up" card. If a ship gets a face up card it will keep the card even if it is turned face down. If a face down "card" that isn't actually a card it turned face up (Saboteur) you can immediate replace the damage token (the something else) with a card before flipping it over.
