My friends and I started playing X-Wing about a year ago and all really enjoy it. There are a few events in my area occasionally and I would like to start attending them to get a better feel for the game and hopefully start running our own events as early as this Summer or Fall. I play more for fun so running the table and being ultra competitive isn't my style, but I also know from my experience with other games and gamers that getting obliterated game after game doesn't make for a good experience. So my question is what is a good collection of vehicles to start attending events with? Currently I have: 2x Tie Fighters/ 2x Tie Interceptor/ 1x Tie Advanced / 1 Tie Bomber/ 2x X-Wing / 1 A-Wing / 1 B-Wing/ 1 HWK-290. Part of me feels like I need to build up a little more but where. If it helps I tend to lean toward the Imperial side. Also, where would I be able to find comprehensive tourney rules? Thanks in advance!

Alright, I see
2x Tie
2x Interceptor
1x Advanced
1x Bomber
.
vs
2x X
1x A
1x B
1x HWK
My immediate thoughts are:
Get the Tie and X-Wing Expansions (they have Pilots and Upgrades not found in the core set)
Get the Slave-1, Millennium Falcon, Y-Wing, and Lamda Class Shuttle expansions (at least 1 of each ship, so you know how to do)
Get more of the ships you like, including the expansions that are coming soon (like the Imperial Aces, which bring us more Interceptor Pilots)
The Brown Bomber is pointing you to the big thread on the topic. It comes up so often something should be stickied for it at least once per wave.
You lack large ships and that is where you find most of the modification upgrades that can be used on any ship. The Falcon and Slave 1 are great additions to a collection for many reasons.
Looking at your list I'm guessing you have one core set and you have an X-Wing Expansion. You really should get a TIE Fighter Expansion pack as it gives you a number of unique pilots not found in the core set but which ARE found in many builds. On the issue of TIE Fighters you will often see them run in multiples and even three doesn't really cut it if they are run as anything more than filler. Even most "mini-swarms" will have four or five and the least expensive way to bring you up to that level will probably be another Core set. That core set would also get you a third X-Wing which is useful for many builds.

The TIE Expansion has 2 of the best pilots in the entire game:
Backstabber is a lvl 6 for 16 points that gets an extra attack die when he's shooting outside of the defender's firing arc.
This makes him basically a Lvl 6 interceptor, without boost, for 6 points cheaper (than the Lvl 6 Interceptors).
Howlrunner is a lvl 8 for 18 points with an EPT slot that lets every friendly ship at Range 1 reroll a primary attack die.... for free.
That's right, she passes out the better half of a target lock to her entire fleet if you fly her right, and it doesn't even cost her an action or a stress token to do so.
