Wave 5 and beyond....

By Lumberjack Nick, in X-Wing

So I've been thinking of where FFG might go this next year regarding X-Wing.

If Wave 4 comes out as announced perhaps could Wave 5 come out fourth quarter this year? If so I'll almost garauntee that there'll be a Star Wars Rebels tie in. Could Wave 5 include the Ghost, the Phantom, or a Proto Tie Fighter?

I also believe we'll be seeing Rebel Aces Rogue Squardron sooner than later as well.

I also could see them doing a Shadows of the Empire tiein wave as well. The Outrider, IG-2000, Black Sun fighter. Though SotE isn't the most popular thing nowadays so who knows, but those all would be great ships.

What about a Battle of Hoth wave. It would be tricky, and maybe a new spin on the current X-Wing game, but a Snowspeeder and an AT-AT walker is almost inevitable.

But I'm almost certain about that Rebels tiein.

Thoughts?

yeah a battle of hoth expansion would be awesome. snowspeeder + ground troops + AT-AT walker starter set please.

rogue squadron expansion?

YES please - repainted x-wing with new pilots, astromechs + upgrades :) ;) :)

uhh.. snow speeders and AT-ATs are not space ships.. no purpose in the game.. not 100% on the speeders, but I'm sure they ar atmospheric ships..

this is a Space Dog fighting game, I'm pretty sure they aren't gonna go and start making ground forces..

Also, there is an extensive discussion on wave 5 speculation already..

not sure how likely it is, especially now that the Z95 is pretty similar I would say (besides the missile slot), but I have always been a big fan of the T16 Skyhopper and would like to see it in the game. Any other T16 fans? I wasn't sure it was even spaceworthy but Wookieepedia mentions it is both pressurized and capable of trans-orbital travel.

Thoughts on its stats? I would guess a cheap ship with something like 3/2/3/0 with a fast dial but minimal turning ability, and a long K-turn at 5. Maybe a boost but no barrel roll, possibly evade. Maybe a turret or cannon upgrade due to its underslung turret-like blaster?

it was an early Rebel ship as well, then they started finding the better ships. Might be possible for a future release, but it's gonna probably be worse than the Z95. Gosric has a T19 on his shapeways site.. I got one.. lol.. I think the T-16 could be a fun ship in a campaign setting as a planetary defense force craft.

A T-16 with 3 attack dice.....um no!

How ever I could see them making a ground combat expansion using a modified rule set.

Be nice to see them also make Battlestar spin-off expansion, again using a modified rule set but using more realistic space mechanics with an optional set off rules to have both SW and BSG fighters on the board.

I'd just love to see how FFG would go about having X-wings with their arcade style space combat mixing it up with Vipers and realistic maneuvers mmmmm tasty :P

Turret/cannon upgrade, then? Curious because of the huge hanging blaster underneath, similar to the HWK's. Also, no need for ground rules set, at least for the T16. No hyper drive but it's capable of trans- orbital travel, planet-to-planet, similar to a TIE fighter.

That huge looking blaster is not a stock load out so yes to the cannon upgrade.

As for stock I couldn't see it have much fire power, it is really just a trainer craft. Luke mentions flying in one, not sure if he owned it, but the impression I got was that it was his and if a poor farmer can own one it can't be much of a combat craft.

Comparing it with a Tie/Ln is madness regardless.

That's why I said it would be somewhat of a different game. It'll happen eventually.

Meant to compare it as having similar range to a TIE fighter, not a similar combat craft. Most people aren't aware it is capable of space travel.

Anyway I don't see it as a very likely addition, it's just a personal favorite of mine from the universe.

Other wave five possibilities? I also like the Skipray, and the rebels could use another large base.

You can see the T-16 in A New Hope during the garage scene.

Thoughts on the new Star Wars Rebels ships? I mean there's got to be a tiein.

You know. More than speculating on a new wave when the previous has just been announced seems a bit presumptuous right now. We have two separate releases that have not managed to come out on time. Imp Aces still hasn't hit shelves, and I am not confident in the Caps getting out before Summer at this rate. Wave 5? Hell, I don't think Wave 4 will be out by Christmas. What I would rather see is FFG taking a long hard look at its Supply Chain and figuring out where the delay is in meeting their release dates.

Now. To answer your question....Wave 5 better have the YT 2400, gosh darn it! :)

We already have a tiein, with Baron Fel. We even have a new two pack of tieins coming soon :P

I dont think they will, the show is new and unproven. It could be a total flop, so from marketing perspective not a reason to jump on it right away.

There is plenty of EU stuff to utilize

Likelihood of flopping is quite low. It COULD be bad, but kids will watch it. And that's what matters to them. Bad movies succeed all the time, and kids love their star wars.

I've houseruled air and ground units, if anyone's interested. The only new rule is a reverse maneuver.

I hate to complain after getting TIE Phantoms and TIE Defenders, but seriously, where's the Assault Gunboat!?! =D

I think we talked about that already in an other thread. :)

no reason not to use AT-ATs in space just give them a nice strong shove out of a fitting hangar and you have your AT-AT in space. Sure, the maneuver dial would be a bit limited, but shooting shouldn't be a problem, as long as it doesn't rotate too much. Give other ships the action to tractor stuff and it gets second hand maneuvers. Probably shouldn't go too fast, don't know if those things have inertial compensators (or similar stuff), a pilot's abilities are a bit hard to apply if he is flattened against the back of the cockpit (and a mess for the cleaning robots).

I'll be surprised if they give us a wave 5 this year. I expect wave 4 no earlier then quarter 3 aka July. I expect 2 Capitol rebel ships and maybe quarter 4 has 1 imperial version. I expect 1 more aces box for rebels as well this year. And that's a lot of releases for this year. I still think they will release a card/ability and scenario pack before they release wave 5. Any real wave 5 I expect in 2015. I can only see a few ships left to produce as well.

What about an expansion introducing a new gameplay element...like planet control?

This would be played on a larger scale though so not sure if viable, just burping out ideas.

You would place 3 or 4 large planet tokens on the map, along with the asteroids. Introduction of ground forces would be included with the expansion. You could land troops on a planet that could serve to build defenses and production building. You could land a ship on a planet, forfeiting it's action and combat phase and he could do 1 of those:

- If the planet have a Engineering Bay: Replace one System Upgrade, Modification, Cannon, Missile, Torpedo, Bomb/Mine with another upgrade of those types allowed by the ship

- If the planet have a Pilot Training Facility: You could replace one Title, Elite Pilot Talent, Crew upgrade, Astromech or even replace the pilot (?!?!) for a new upgrade or Pilot

You would have to mine some materials to be able to pay for this switch. Maybe landing some sort of miner bot on an asteroid could give you the ressrouces needed.

That would completely change how X-Wing would be played and that'll never happen lol.

Honestly? I'm really hating all the news coming out for Rebels at the moment. My initial thoughts were excited but the more I see the less I like. I was at Celebration Europe for the first reveals from Dave Filoni.

Honestly, I play this game because I like the dogfighting... if I wanted to play a ground force miniatures game, I'd play flames of war or any number of other games like that. I dont see the need for a ground forces aspect, and I feel it would diminish the game as it gets too diverse in its scope.

So, for me, I hope they never add that element into the game.

I too hope it'll never come to that and it never will. I was just in a sleepy mood (got up at 5:30am) and I was just in a ramble mood :P

No worries, just dropping comments where I see it needs one.. lol

We all have opinions on this game and others... my usual gaming group is a bunch of historical miniatures players.. and I usually bow out of those games... just not my cup of tea..
