The many variants of the X Wing

By yoink101, in X-Wing

Has anyone considered trying to use any of the x wing variants? I there are about a dozen variations of the regular x wing, including the x wing advanced and the tandem x wing. There's also the stealth x wing and several renditions of the xj x wing. Can you achieve these by adding a single modification, or would editing the rules for it (adding an additional torpedo, a sensor slot, another action, or something else) do it? Or does nobody care that much?

I ask this, because with the e wing and the tie defender coming out, the x wing while still cheaper will be highly out performed. In the EU I know there were upgrades made to keep the iconic ship relevant while the technology advanced.

While strictly being an imperial player, wedge, engine upgrades, push & and the new droid is pretty hard to beat.

I've always wondered if FFG would ever release and XJ version or at least a pilot card with XJ stats.

I was thinking the other day if they, FFG, really wanted to keep this game freash for a long time they could make minis of every alternate version of each fighter. Just off the top my head TIE Interceptors have at least 7 diffrent versions, more so if you take into consideration they are one of the most easy to mod, the most extreme version being the "Star Hunter."

As for the X-Wings I dont think you could bring them into this game with current mod cards. The most extreme one would be the Jedi version with ultra powerful explosives that are force thrown by the pilot out of the torp tubes. If you did a house rule for that weapon I guess you could have any proton fired from that X-Wing not need a target lock.

When it comes to performance, you could probably easily just use the new E-Wing cards and stats if you want to represent the newest X-Wings. All you probably have to do is switch up the Hull and Shields and you got it since the Newest X-Wings and E-Wings were extremely comparable showing just how far the X-Wing had come since the E-Wing was made to be a much higher performance replacement. As for the stealth X you would probably mix the E-wing stats with the Phantom abilities.

The only thing that has me worried about this game is that eventually they are going to run out of meaningful number combinations for their stats and we might start seeing too many rehashes.

Really? I don't think it'd be too hard.

A T-65AC4 would be Engine Upgrade.

an XJ-series would be Hull or Shield Upgrade,

a Stealth-X would be Stealth device or R2-F2,

and for the Jedi shadow-bombs just use Advanced Proton Torpedoes and Deadeye, along with someone to pass Focus.

The problem is those are way to simple of a change or not true enough to represent those diffrent X-Wings esp the Jedi version and the Recon version.

I do agree with you that the StealthX is different enough to have a separate profile, likely Agility 3, Shields 1, and Evade, as well as having a generic Jedi "Twin Suns Squadron Pilot" with an Elite Pilot Talent. But most of the others are pretty darn close. Besides too much emphasis on the variants of one ship, and you run into this:

If you gave all the different serial-number combinations of X-Wing a unique statline, action bar, etc. you'd leave no room for other ships. Yeah the XJ-3 is different than the XJ-1, but by a large enough margin to justify a separate profile? Or even a different upgrade card?

If you take the existing and announced ship and modification cards, you can come pretty darn close to representing basically any combat (not recon or support) variant of any existing or announced ship that exists before the NJO era, and I believe this is intentional.

EDIT: Personally, I love getting into the nitty-gritty of starfighter design, but I also believe one of the virtues of this game is its abstraction.

Don't need engine upgrade to use the new droid, unless you want to boost without activating the target lock function.

I hope FFG can keep coming up with creative new twists for ship profiles, so that they can continue to introduce more ship types. Wave four was great, and I have hopes will see a wave 5, 6 and 7. But with each wave introduced, it makes it harder to make the next one uniquely distinguishable. I fear that we may get to a point where some ships won't get made just because something similar is already in the game.

I can't help but think that variants of X-Wings would fall into this category, but they did do some minor tweaks with the YT-1300 pilot cards, so perhaps that angle could be used.

Personally, I feel getting more cool looking ships outweighs having unique mechanics for them. If the Outrider is essentially a clone of the Falcon, I'd still get one. Just throw a few new upgrade cards in with it and you can sell the like hotcakes. But I think FFG takes the game much more seriously, and won't let something like this happen. And who am I to dispute them, they are the ones with the incredibly successful game, not me.

I actually hope the next wave is nothing but support ships like the TIE rc and Scout and Y-Wing A4 Long-probe. They could add some cool new ways to play.

I would get the Outrider too!!!

You know the reason that ship was in ep 4 was because GL thought it was a very beautiful ship, I agree, I have a personal question to ask you. If you could alter time and allow GL to use the model of the outrider to replace the falcon would you let GL do that? I think he said he liked it more than the Falcon if I remember correctly.
