Is Swarm Tactics worth another look?

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

With the on set of the expensive wave 4 ships and some pricey ones in wave 3, is swarm tactics worth a second look.

Some of the newer ships don't really need to move first, but shooting first is always a big advantage. I have been trying out at 4 Int list that all shoot at PS9 thanks to Swarm Tactics and I am looking at an all B-Wing list that shoots at PS8.

Could this be an answer to fielding the new expensive ships and having the ability to shoot first?

Howlrunner with Swarm and Stealth would make a good wing mate for a low PS Defender and maybe a Defender with an EPT to chain two of them to PS8.

Same possibility with E-Wings etc?

Was Swarm Tactics ever really put on the back burner?

No it wasn't.

How would that be?

Highest PS with 4 ships and 12 red die (no Roark) I can get is 8/8/4/6 with Luke +ST, Rookie, Red,Garven.

You can chain the st from ten numb to itbisam to a dagger. 8,8,8

thought were 4Bs, not 3. my mistake

Interesting that people don't think swarm tactics is under used. In my area meta it is hardly ever seen and I rarely see it in lists posted on this forum. Funny how different locations have different views.

Maybe I should rephrase and ask whether people think swarm tactics is maybe useful in a much wider range of squads than it once was?

In one of the semi-final games at the Game Cafe Store Championship, KineticOperator faced off against Dustin, both running swarms with Howl and Mauler each having Swarm Tactics. KO went on to win the event.

Swarm Tactics is never a bad card, although there may be times when there are better EPT's. It's still very useful.

Is this silly?

HWK without turret is indeed silly.

For 27 points you get 1 extra red + PS8 VS. Garven (26)

If we lose init is 28 and you can have Dutch + Ion but no PS boost to the rookie.

I may try and let u know how it goes. It's an expensive support ship but if gets targeted last my squad will do more damage on the long run.

Instead of Jan + ST and Rookie you could have Wedge + ST and prototype. More attack dice to start with.

while I agree on your point the squad then becomes more predictable. Wedge will be targeted first and go down fast so ST will have short use.

The Jan setting has less dice but one red is 'mobile' ensuring that it gets used every round while Jan is alive and all ships (shooting at PS8) then become a threat. I was thinking to lose init and trade a Rookie for a Blue and seriously try it out this afternoon

I'd like to know, against

Luke + ST

Jan + ST

Rookie

Blue

who would you target first?

If I had the firepower to take out Luke in one round I'd go after him. More likely it is the Rookie. Then one of the ST upgrades becomes useless.

If swarm tactics has fallen out of favor it's probably due to the fact that there are now so many ways to kill a single target via missiles, heavy laser cannon, stacking actions and other attack buffs, etc that if you are using it as an essential part of your squad or to chain PS you cannot always guarantee that ship will stick around and make it worthwhile. Howlrunner can maybe do it by hanging at the back of a swarm, or a rebel squadron with Biggs could keep the ship around longer, but in general its tough to keep your "important" ship around without spending points on other skills or upgrades to improve survivability.

I use it on Wedge on my squad. I put him behind everyone so he is able to do swarm, but is more like to be at a further range for attackers making him a less viable target, plus his unique ability means he can be at range 3 and not care when attacking.
