6 tie swarm list?

By Jaden Ckast, in X-Wing

So I made this list and maybe it's been done before but is there any obvious drawbacks I'm missing?

2 alpha squadron tie interceptors w/stealth device=42 pts

1 dark curse tie fighter w/stealth device=19 pts

2 academy pilot tie fighters=24 pts

1 black squadron tie fighter=14

Total=99

The interceptors would then be rolling 4 agility not to mention the range 3 bonus when defending and if you take an evade that's a potential of 6 evades at range 3 or 5 evades at any other range. plus at range 1 you would then be rolling 4 attack dice.

Then 2 academy pilots for fillers

Then 1 dark curse tie fighter for extra defense

Last 1 black squadron for some extra pilot skill

To me this gives you the firepower you need while also making it extremely hard to get hit. The interceptors would be placed in the front of the formation since they have a higher agility which means more possible wasted shots on them while also getting a possible extra attack dice at range 1. Anyways any thoughts would be appreciated, who knows maybe this is a dumb build haha but just throwing it out there.

Also would this be better with the interceptors in the back or front?

A: You've got 4 stealth devices. Is their damage mitigation going to outweigh simply having another Academy Pilot?

B: Marksmanship is not worth the points in most cases, and certainly not when you've only got 2 attack dice. Why spend 3 points for a focus that crits but doesn't help dodge, when you've got a regular focus for free?

C: If you're running an Imperial Swarm, DEFINITELY figure out how to run Howlrunner. She's too good to pass up in a swarm scenario.

This would be better with the Interceptors to the side. They're some of the best flankers in the entire game. Time it so that when the first shots are fired, the Interceptors are either at the side or behind the enemy, shooting them with 3 dice where returning fire can't be shot back.

Just looking at this, I would say upgrade the BSP to Night Beast. Now you have 4 ships that are very hard to kill (NB should be taking evade most turns, and getting a focus for doing a green) (DC is always hard to kill, and he has a stealth)... The alpha's will likely be the first to be prioritized, though I'd expect an Academy to die first.

Well only 3 stealth devices 2 on the interceptors and 1 on dark curse which if I took all 3 off that's only 9 pts which isn't enough for another tie unless I deleted the marksmanship like you said and then that would generate an extra tie fighter. So it would look like 2 interceptors, 3 black squadron pilots and 1 dark curse without the marksmanship or stealth? The only reason I put stealth on the interceptors is because they are going to be prime targets and therefore would benefit from an extra defense die.

Easier to run if you can keep pilot skills close. I'm not sure what the BSP gets you but take it down to Obsidian level and boost both Academies and I think it will fly better. It may be giving up the big for initiative but you are gaining PS on any PS 2 ships you may face.

I will point out that you've made Dark Curse an "ignore me" ship because it can be so hard to hit BUT doesn't hit back all that hard. I'd take off the SD and use those points on the Fighters or would look at throwing in Backstabber.

I see this squad as flying in two groups. You'll have your Interceptor pair which you will probably want to try flanking with and then your quartet of Fighters which you could break down further into pairs. Leaving the Interceptors alone here are your choices for 58 points of TIE Fighter:

Academy x2, Dark Curse, Backst abber +2 points (Obsidian instead of Academy?)

Academy x3, Howlrunner w/ Stealth +1 point

Obsidian x3, Howlrunner +1 point

BSP x4 +2 points (BSP to Dark Curse/Backstabber)

If you have 4 points left over you could consider upgrading the Interceptor's PS assuming you think you'll be facing PS 2 ships. Of course if you are facing PS 4+ upgrading from 1 to 3 is just a waste of points but that is a risk you'll need to weigh.

Your list is very similar to a list that I've run before. It works very well, and I find that it does really well against other swarms.

Howl + VI

Black + DtF

x2 Alpha + Stealth

x2 Academy

Academy are the front row, the Alpha's are the middle, and Howl and black in the back. The alpha's extra red die really adds up, and lets you hit really hard targets, especially with Howls re-roll ability. A swarm without Howlrunner can struggle unless you have some 3 dice guns, having both is a bonus.

Were the stealth devices worth it on your interceptors? What I mean is did they last long enough to be worth the points being that if you take a hit you discard your SD.

Gets rid of the interceptors I know, but I have played the following list several times. All the named TIE fighter pilots with Stealth Device on Howlrunner.

Howlrunner+Stealth Device

Mauler Mithel

Dark Curse

Night Beast

Winged Gundark

Backstabber

Have had a lot of success in a competitive league and beaten more typical swarms several times.

I have had a lot of luck with:

Three Academy Pilots

Howlrunner with Swarm Tactics

Two Saber Squadron TIE Interceptors with Veteran Instincts

I am really looking forward to Imperial Aces coming out to swap out the Sabers for Royal Guards.
