Tackle Box - Wave 4 / large ship storage

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

I know alot of you guys use foam, but I'm more of a tackle box guy at the moment. I was using a simple Plano deep case but it was getting sloppy so I needed to upgrade. a few nights ago I picked up one of these and I LOVE it!

It's got 4 drawers, oh which I'm only using 3 atm so I've got plenty of room for expansion. The Lambda's fit sideways perfectly with the wings folded. And the best part is that the top portion opens up and should hold the Tantive perfectly!

Does anyone else use a tackle box? What kind do you use? Do you think your current box or storage system will be good enough through wave 4?

I use a tool box, with 3 trays of pluck foam. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-22-in-Cantilever-Plastic-Tool-Box-with-Metal-Latches-189745/202021302

With the news of Wave 4, I did some reorganizing of it, and now have plenty of space for W4. I don't plan on putting the large models in it though. Part of that is because I don't think I'll be playing with them that often since I'm more of a tourney type of guy.

In the main compartment, I have 3 stacks of foam, big ships (bottom), imps (mid), rebels (top). They take up like 9 of the 10inches that the toobox is deep. So in that final inch, I have a 2x2 side loading card binder (thanks to I believe Sable) holding all of the upgrade cards. The big bases / cardboard inserts are also behind the foam.

Next to the foam, I have a deck box with all of the pilots, and I made two trays out of poster board to hold all the imp dials and cardboard inserts. This leaves quite a bit of space ontop of that area, so it's possible that I could do something else in that area, but is currently unneeded. I also have the rule book, FAQ, and tourney rules tucked in there.

Up top, I made several boxes out of poster board again to hold all of the rebel dials (one for each type of ship). They take up about 2/3 of the left column, leaving space for W4 dials. Then I have 9 tubs for all of the different tokens and plastic pegs (pegs, focus, evade, TL, #, dice, shields, stress, ion/crit (I have like 5 in a small baggie)) then on the right column, I have all of the bases, though it only has space for a few more... given I'm currently carrying 35 as it is, so I guess I'm fine not having 1 for every. single. ship.

On the front slot, I have my asteroids, maneuver templates, range ruler, damage deck, and another box for all of the rebel cardboard inserts.

It really is amazing how much space got freed up from the purchase of that binder. I highly recommend storing your upgrade cards in a side loading card binder.

I am considering that. I still use an old binder that I had from the old decipher Star Wars CCG - so needless to say I've had it for almost 20 years now. It's kind beat up. I need a new binder. One with normal card pages for my pilots, but also with business card pages for the upgrades.

I use that same exact thing.

I use a Husky organizer that (barely) fits my ludicrous amount of stuff. All small ships and small ship cardboards, small asteroids, damage decks (3,) maneuver templates, and dice are up top, with the ship cards, large bases, large asteroids, and upgrade cards in the holders in the bottom, with the large ships in their plsatic in spaces left by removing a few of the plsatic cups (they are all removable, top and bottom,) and the small bases and containers holding tokens thrown in around them... It works for now, but Imp Aces will be tight, and once wave 4 drops something's gotta come out

I use a two-drawer version of the OP's box and it's been great. It should accommodate the next wave plus aces for me, and I have 6 TIEs, 5 Interceptors (including Aces), 4 X's, 3 Bs, and two of everything else. I made custom foam liners for the drawers to keep ships snug and use a smaller drawer for the counters. Big base ships fit in the top.

I doubt I will have to transport any of the massive ships very often, so I'll probably just foam-line a box for those occasions.

Here is a link to the one I use: http://www.dewalt.com/tools/hand-tools-storage-and-work-support-organizers-dwst14825.aspx

this organizer is amazing. 4 Inches deep so it will handle anything and when it is full you buy another and it clips to the first, so you cannot ever out grow it. I have one with all my dials, templates, tokens, ship cards and such. I have one with all my ships,(17) still in the plastic clamshells they are sold in. One is the Falcon and one Slave....with room for 5 more standard ships before I max it out. When I reach the point I need a third I can just clip it on and separate the Empire ships from the Rebles. Imagine, three toolboxes full of stuff and I only need one hand to carry it.

I'm sorry... I laughed out loud when I saw the Rebel box.

Thanks this is exactly what I was looking for. Seeing how you have your game laid out in the box really helps visualize how well it works. Do you have the models attached to the bases in the Scum / Empire boxes?

I have the tray bottoms lined with sticky sided bubble wrap and set all the models in the box. I figured since the box isn't ever (supposed to) tip on it's side, then just laying the models in the tray on the bubble wrap was more than enough. Haven't had any problems with it so far.

Got it for Heroclix, now it stores my Star Wars LCG and X-Wing collections. Eventually the LCG will have to be evicted from the case. 1 large tray in the middle fits my ships, dials, templates, tokens, bases and stands. One of the side trays holds Pilot cards, upgrades, damage cards, a plethora of the little ID tokens and any tokens that are used in scenario missions.

Excellent! Thank you very much for taking more time to make more pictures. The bubble wrap on the bottom is a fantastic idea.

Hey Duke, how many ships does that allow you? I've been saving the vacuum molded holders from my packaging for such a solution, however I have quite a considerably large force for both rebels and imperials. So how many ships are you able to fit inside?

My backpack is always ready to go :)

Still 1½ layer of pluck foam left for the next waves.

This is the same tackle box I use. I got it on clearance from Walmart.

The Imperial and Rebel ships have one big storage box each. Those boxes also have all the pilot cards, pegs and stands, and for the Empire, bomb tokens. The third big tray is empty and waiting for more ships. :)

The smaller, right-side box includes all the tokens, asteroids, damage cards and upgrades. Left-side one is empty, for now. Range rulers, my two sets of movement templates and rule book and papers live in the top compartment.

what do you guys do with your larger ships? The trays do not seem to be large enough to hold those. What is your plan for the capital ships when they come out?

I can fit on Falcon, or a Lamda and Firespray in one of the larger compartments in the large white boxes. Of course, I don't use any packing. I let the ships rattle around. Since I only use the box once a week or so, I'm not worried about damage. The capital ships will be interesting. I don't know if I'll be able to afford them right away, but I figure once I get them I'll try to find a way to store them in the top compartment.

I also use this exact case and yet I still need more room for wave 4.

I got mine at Wal-Mart... It was not on sale :o That was back in my "omg I must buy every heroclix ever" phase. Oh well.

At the moment my only large ship is the YT-1300 (more ships soon!) and it fits into one of the large trays quite nicely. Definitely room for more ships as I have 9 in just 1 tray including almost everything needed to go with the ships and there is still room for a couple more in that tray.

I don't worry much about the ships being loose because I've used the little section dividers to make sure the ships with easily breakable parts are well taken care of (1 X-Wing will fit standing with the nose up in the smallest compartment you can make quite snugly).

Eventually the Rebellion and Empire will command their own, separate. trays.

For Capitol ships, if I cannot fit them in the top compartment *note, the top compartment is taller than it looks on the outside* then I may need new storage. For the time being, I am way behind on X-Wing purchases. I haven't even gotten everything I want from waves 1&2.
