Thoughts on tournament build, and overlap question

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

Last night while playing my opponents final position, the little points on the base that you use to line up your movement template was on a asteroid, does that count as overlapping?

Tried looking in the book and faq, couldn't find anything.

I guess the main question is does that still count as part of your base?

Next I'm wondering about a few builds. Going to enter my first tournament in March, this is what I was thinking

Squad 1

Chewy with draw their fire and gunner

Biggs with R2D2

Rookie pilot

Which leaves 2 points to play with

Or

Switch or rookie pilot and go with blue squadern pilot.

Squad2

Captian Jones with proton torpedoes

Scimitar X2 with concussion missles and proton torpedoes

Academy pilots X2

Which leaves 2 points to play with

Squad 3

Biggs with R2D2

Rookie pilot

Blue squadern pilot with auto blasters

Gold squadern pilot with ion canon turret

I've won a game so far with squad 2, and 3, and haven't played the first one yet, but thought it may work well.

Just want to go with the best squad that will increase my chances of winning or at least not lose in the first round lol

Also how does the point system in tournament work of both players are alive when the time ends?

To my knowledge nubs do not count when determining overlapping.

No the nubs don't count

Ok thanks, I could have sworn I read somewhere that the guides on the base counted as part of the base, but good to know

Any thoughts which squad I posted above would do best in a tournament?

That is incorrect - nubs count for overlapping, however, they do not count for range measurements (except for the bombs). Let me see if I can find the official reference for this.

Edit: Well, it seems there is no reference where it is explicity called out. However, the rules state that if any part of the base overlaps, it's considered overlapping. Furthermore, it is called out in the rules that they are to be excluded from measuring range/arc:

pg10 " Note: When determining firing arc and measuring

range, ignore all guides (the two small bumps on the
front and rear of each base)."
So, the two pieces of info together imply that the nubs count. Furthermore, there is no way to set the base down without backing the ship up if they touch. As such, you're not completing the full maneuver.

Ok so there is a bit of a mixed reaction to this rule, but as the poster above this said, I thought it was considered part of the base.

Be really good to know before I enter in Mt first tournament next month

Part of the base, part of the ship.

No the nubs don't count

That is not only flat out wrong but also mind boggling illogical from a pure physics point of view since if a ship's nubs prevent it from completing its maneuver or it causes it to overlap an asteroid then the ship OVERLAPS!

Also - this means that if you're head on facing another ship, a 1 straight will NOT clear it.

I ran into the issue of nubs overlapping on G3 at Worlds (was actually on the main stage at the time). I asked the judge, and he said that unfortunately they do count for overlapping. I believe the reasoning is from a pure physics standpoint, where the base would not rest properly or would have to be moved back.

I have a similar question, when setting up your ships, can the nubs be hanging of the board? Or do they have to be on it?

They have to be on it. They are part of the base. They also count for the purposes of flying of the board.

The nubs absolutely count 100% when considering overlapping AND when measuring range AND for placement!

Nubs = part of the base

*ANY part of the base...

*closest point to closest point (on bases)...

No they don't count for range. The base rule book explicitly says that they don't.

Your right(just checked the book) guess imma have to point this out to the guy who told me they do! As he has used this against me in at least one of our games.

The nubs on a bomb token count for measuring distance though, just FYI. Maybe that's what you're confusing.
