Dumb Combos

By Ravncat, in X-Wing

Herein is a thread for things not to do in X-wing...

Major Rhymer + Assault Missiles.

A-wing or Interceptor + Engine Upgrade.

Falcon or Shuttle + 2 Gunners (or Gunner+Luke)

Biggs Darklighter + Expose

Jan + Opportunist or Elusiveness

Black Squadron Tie + Deadeye

Darth Vader + Push the Limit.

Garvin + Dutch

(Oh wait that's just me hating to face that combo)

Biggs + Draw Their Fire

Darth Vader + Push the Limit.

This is actually a pretty good combo, especially if you give Vader an Engine Upgrade on top of it, as he now gets 3 actions for a stress just like Soontir, but gets to choose all three instead of one (FOcus) being chosen for him

I listed this because I've found in my games, that I rarely need a third action with vader.

I can see the case for engine upgrade, but you're adding 3 points to be able to do Boost + something + something. If Vader does Boost + Barrel roll to get out of arc - you might want that 3rd action for a focus or TL to buff your attack - but the stress token then severely limits his next move - in which case you'll likely want to boost again, and you're locked into a cycle - if you skip the damage adjustment and just barrel roll and boost out of arc - and not PTL, then you're stress free and have more movement options.

PTL also locks you out of the other talents that Vader can take.

Yeah, I'm sure it was meant as a joke because it's not a dumb combo. Like Eruletho suggest, if you give him also an engine upgrade, you can do a barrel roll and boost action to get you into firing position or get out of danger and still get a focus or evade token. Or target lock, focus and evade actions in one turn. The possibility of getting 3 actions in a round is not something I consider dumb.

The only thing missing for this combo is a Green 1 move.

I'll agree that while there are probably better talents to pair with Vader (Squad Leader, Swarm Tactics,) especially Vader with Engine Upgrade (Daredevil, Expose,) PTL works well on nearly everyone that can take an elite pilot talent. The only ships I don't like running it on are the ones that only have 2 actions to choose from, especialyl if one is target lock, and that is currently only the X-wing and Falcon (And Y-wing, but moot point, as no EPT pilots exist there.)

Chewbacca + determination

Kyle + blaster turret (with no recon or title)

Any interceptor that could take draw their fire

Green squadron with deadeye without missile.

Daredevil without boost in action bar.

HWK without turret.

HWK without turret.

Haha its not a 'combo' but sure as hell is dumb. :D

Chewbacca + determination

That's not bad.

Chewbacca turns a pilot crit into a face down card. Determination discards the card entirely.

Its ability does not get resolved and is flipped down making it a regular hit (no choice), determination kicks in later and so has no target to claim. But I could be reading it wrong...

HWK + Turret + Mercenary Co-pilot

HWK + Gunner

But I could be reading it wrong...

You are. Determination on Chewbacca works.

Both abilities trigger when you are dealt the card. They trigger at the same time. They need to be resolved at the same time. According to the FAQ the player may choose which effect is resolved first.

Q: If a player has multiple effects that resolve

at the same time, can he resolve them in

any order?

A: Yes.

Jonus in a squad with no secondary weapons...like I was going to do a couple weeks ago before I realised he was a waste lol.

Lambda + autoblaster (you never get into range 1)

TIE Phantom + Vader

TIE Phantom + weapons engineer (no target lock action)

Garven + R5-K6

Rhymer or Krassis without a secondary weapon.

Green squadron + swarm tactics

Chewbacca + Shield Upgrade, after the release of Imperial Aces.

Surprised no one pointed out Biggs can't take DtF or Expose or any of these suggestions since he has no EPT.

I still want to try Vader w/ EU + DD. Boost followed by a 90 turn? yes please :)

I've been tempted to take GSP + ST before, but only in combo with another high PS w/ ST (or Roark)

Han + APL (or really any named pilot big ship)

IA in a squad of HWK+X+Y wings (though I suppose there could be a slight use of whether to TL or F)

Jan + PTL

Howlrunner w/ DTF or Expose

Several of the "why would you take two of the same crew" (nav, gunner, saboteur, weapons eng, flight instructor (you only have 1 die most of the time))

According to my latest math - anyone with stealth when there were enough points for SU

Howlrunner + Expose + Engine Upgrade

Dumb combos there are not, dumb pilots and commanders there are.

Targeting Computer on anything that already has TL available which is actually most things.

Although it technically functions:

Any HWK with Gunner or Luke. Miss with your first attack then maybe try again with your 1 die primary attack.

I am seeing some here that actually HAVE uses. For example Green Squad Pilot + Swarm Tactics can be fine AS PART OF A ST chain.

Squad Leader on ANY ship when you have no lower PS ships in the squad.

Rebel Transport + Stealth Device

After playing with a buddy for a couple weeks we went to our first tournament (Kessel Run) and he ran an Imperial squad I built for him which had a Black Squadron Pilot with Squad Leader, and it was the lowest skilled pilot. (At the time I was the only one with X-Wing Miniatures) We learned a lot at that tournament.

One of his brain farts: he was considering putting Anti Pursuit Lasers on Han Solo.

APL could work on Han. It's just that the only way it does any good there is if someone deliberately runs into Han as they should know where he is when he starts. With the ORS you can move it to where they will be so they can hit you but with Han they need to hit you before you move which may even let you shoot the guy who just bumped into you and took damage.
