Ran Red Daggers Yesterday

By Zoccola, in X-Wing

So I ran this last night:

Dagger Squadron Pilot + FCS

Dagger Squadron Pilot + FCS

Red Squadron Pilot + R2

Red Squadron Pilot + R2

Faced off against (if memory serves):

Jonus + Squad Leader + Homing Missile

Scimitar Squadron + Assault Missile + Concussion Missile

Scimitar Squadron + Assault Missile + Concussion Missile

Scimitar Squadron + Assault Missile

I barely lost. Had I spread out a bit (for some reason I was flying in a tight formation and ate 2 assault missiles that hit everyone) I might have won the game. In the end he limped out with a single scimitar with 2 hull left.

FCS didnt do much for me, but the R2s really helped. Not sure how it would have done with Advanced Sensors. I found I enjoyed the PS4 more than I thought I would, I got to fire before the scimitars, which saved me more than once.

I might try the same list again (there is a tournament next Thursday at my LGS) or I might fly the following:

Blue Squadron + Advanced Sensors

Blue Squadron + Advanced Sensors

Rookie Pilot + Engine Upgrade

Rookie Pilot + Engine Upgrade

I would loose the fire initiative, but gain lots of mobility. The only problem is I am not used to moving first, I have mostly played with high PS pilots.

Any tips?

I quite like that list, maybe fly rookies down one flank, and the blues the other, if he heads for one group, your second group can turn and fly at him from side/back,

"Try not to eat so many missiles?" :D

LOL! Ya I was kicking myself. They were so tasty! OMG I think I might have a problem. Feel like coke strong Pam from Archer, only instead of coke, its assault missiles.

I usually like to have one ship fly interference. Purposely crash it into as many enemies as I can to deprive them of their actions. I've been really wanting to try Arvel out because he can still shoot whoever he hits, but with a higher PS...I just don't think it'd work out as well, as he would be the one losing his action.

Im a fan of FCS, and I know CrookedWookie likes the Advanced. Why not put a sheild on the rookies? Give them a little beef and try and jam movements.

you could drop them both down to 2 rookies naked, and 2 blues, with HLC, melt those bombers off the table. But you are at ps2 then. could also go 2 rookies and 2 daggers with ion and fcs

OR

1 rookie

1 red with shield and r2d2

2 daggers

I played against a sorta-similar squad at Worlds, where I had 4 Blues, he had I think Vader, Jonus, and Rhymer, all loaded to the gills with missiles and such. I actually managed to rush him by pushing the Blues to their limit, crowding him - I got into range 1/forcing collisions with Vader and Rhymer, and forced Jonus to splash them both with assault missile damage hitting me.

That's where your Reds come in, in that list. Your Bs struggle to push as hard, so one good option is to try and get some of your ships into point blank "too close to missile" range, jumping from range 3 (where he'll Target Lock you) to range 1, ideally making him collide so he can't focus or anything.

That gives him a tough choice - fire the missiles at the B-Wings and let the Reds get unanswered point blank shots, or fire main guns at the X-Wings and let the Blues shoot and then quite possibly jump into point blank range next round while the X-Wings joust and come in behind you?

Otherwise, yeah - spread out. If you can spread out and come in at angles in such a way that you can focus your fire one of his ships, but he can't focus fire on you - or at the very least can't catch your whole squad with an assault missile - you're in pretty good shape. You're going to take some missile fire. You're going to take some damage, and if his alpha strike works, it's going to make for a bad day.

On the other hand if his alpha strike fizzles, he just invested a lot of wasted points and the advantage swings to you. If you can cripple or kill his ships with unspent ordnance still onboard, it's a huge help for you. But with the Daggers squad, your best bet is going to be to spread the Reds out a bit, and RUSH into range 1 with him before he can get shots off, with your Daggers (apologies if I said Blues above someplace) trailing behind. Range 1 shots are tempting, and range 1 unanswered shots are scary. You may make him think twice, and your B-Wings may be able to shrug off the hits while your Reds land big damage in close.

Then next turn rush the Daggers in and K-turn the Reds and catch him in the crossfire, hopefully.

I do. I want to like FCS very much but I find it kind of a pain to use in a lot of games. Targets die (which is the best problem to have), or leave your arc, and now you've got a good shot but your target lock is on some other guy... YMMV but I have better success with AdvS.

2 Rookies and 2 Blues with HLC (which everyone calls Blue Thunder or something, but which I've always called Rookie Blues) is a solid list. It works much the same as I described Bloody Daggers, except it's ps2, as mentioned, and REALLY gives them a tough decision because the Blues are hanging back with big firepower.

I also think you should at least try dropping the R2s, and bumping the FCS up to AdvS on the daggers, see how you like it. It lets you do some fun movement shenanigans, protects against bumps, etc.

It's not a bad list, by any means, and a LOT of good 2B2X variations exist. You just need to (easier said than done) try to minimize his ability to pound you with missiles. If you can weather the alpha strike, not let him catch all your ships in an assault blast, and kill his guys with missiles still unlaunched, you can swing the fight your way.
