Sensor range of Loronar E-9 Explorer?

By ianinak, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for clarifications, but the Loronar E-9 Explorer seems like it should have sensors Long based on the description "Long range scouting", but the book says Medium. Is that a mistake or is it intended to have Medium?

Pg 61 Enter the Unknown. "With their powerful scouting sensor arrays, reliable engines and flight-control computers, and on-board weapon systems, the Explorer-class ships are perfectly suited for long-range scouting, exploration, and even light trade."

As a basis for comparison the Ghtroc 720 also has medium sensors, but mentions nothing related to having good sensors at all, and the YV-560 mentions having great sensors and has sensor range Long.

Medium ranged sensors are still above average on a ship of that size. Long range scouting has less to do with the range of the sensor and more to do with the consumables and hyperdrive multiplier (stay out longer and go further in that time).

I think it's more strange that the Ghtroc has medium range sensors than the E-9 does, really. The Ghtroc is just a low-end freighter, I don't know why it'd default to having longer range sensors than roughly every other non-scout ship of its' size.

(And, as HappyDaze points out, the 'long-range scout' is more of a ship classification, than a reference to the range band reach of the ship's sensors.)

Remember that the stats show passive sensor range, active sensors have one range band more (but in one direction).

While true, "Scout" already implies a vessel that operates way out into the unknown...you know...scouting...

Maybe it would be more appropriate to use Scout for local stuff and Explorer in place of Long-range Scout.

Scouts come in every range from short to long. A short range scout would probably be a local system scout. The Loronar being a long range scout implies that it can go way off the beaten path and stay out there a while.

Thanks for the answers everyone! I guess I will keep them at medium for now (tho the GHTOC still confuses me).

On a side note, if players wanted to upgrade the sensors to get longer range bands, are there rules for doing so? I didn't see any equipment or mods listed that would allow for such... Any homebrew stuff with prices, hps, and other stats?

By default no. But there is one in the free traders and freebooters catalog by Jegergryte. The latest version can be found here or here.
