Questions about modification cards

By Papamambo, in X-Wing

I was wondering about modification cards, and what ships they may be attached to.

One card I keep seeing coming up is Shield Upgrade. I have seen people attaching it to Tie Interceptors for example. Is this possible? If so, how? I don't see any Tie Int pilot that allows for a modification to his ship. Certainly pilot skill cards, but no ship modification cards. What am I missing?? Or are modifications something you can add to ANY ship?

You can have one Modification per ship. Some Modifications have restrictions, like the Anti-Pursuit Lasers, but they will state them on the card.

Yup all ships can have 1 modification of any kind (following restrictions as noted on the card), and one title, if appropriate.

So you can put a shield on any kind of TIE, or boost the existing shield of a ship that has them, give them engine for Boost, whatever. But only 1 per unless noted otherwise, as per the Royal Guard title.

The Millennium Falcon and Slave-1 rule inserts include the details:

Modifications and titles are special upgrades that do not appear in any ship’s upgrade bar. Any ship may equip a modification or title unless the card is restricted to a specific type of ship. Each ship is limited to one modification and one title.

The Imperial Aces pack includes a new Title Upgrade card: "Royal Guard Interceptor" for TIE Interceptors that allows a TIE Interceptor pilot of PS 4 or higher to equip 2 Modifications. So keep in mind that some upgrades can add capabilities beyond the initial one modification and one title card limit.

Thanks, Hex, I knew I'd seen that someplace but couldn't find the card or insert to link to for easy reference.

Cool. I was just looking over the upgrade cards, and noticed a few others that have been used on ships as well - Shield Upgrade, Engine Upgrade, Stealth Device, Anti-Pursuit Lasers and Hull Upgrade..

Question about the Anti Pursuit Lasers - it says on the card Large Ship Only - so I'm assuming that means ships like the Falcon, Firespray and Lambda only (currently the only large ships available until the Capital ships like the Tantive IV and Transport become available. Could you use it on something like the Hawk? I know it isn't a large BASED ship, but with it being the only small ship that has a crew slot currently, maybe it's larger than the fighters in the game..

Large refers to the Base size. So, no HWK APL joy (because I would totally run 5 HWKs with APL and other toys). Indeed, the Rebel Transport and Tantive IV are actually HUGE ships, so they won't be able to take the APL either. Though my understanding if they won't need it.

One of my favorite spots to build lists is: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ (Yet Another Squad Builder). This builder is configured to obey all fleet contruction rules. So if you're trying to do something in that and it's not letting you, there's a reason why. It's also a good place to illustrate the use of Modifications and Titles.

Small Ships: X-Wing, TIE Fighter, HWK-290 and anything with the same sized base. Crew and other upgrades are not relevant, just base size.

Large Ships: YT-1300/Millenium Falcon, Firespray/Slave-1, Imperial Shuttle and anything with the same sized base. Again, the upgrades and such are not relevant, just the base size.

Huge Ships: GR75/Rebel Transport, CR90/Tantive IV and ???. The term "Large" is not being redefined, the term Huge is being added.

I think they should have gone with a tried and true system of measurement:
Wee, Not So Wee, and Frigging Huge!

Indeed, the Rebel Transport and Tantive IV are actually HUGE ships, so they won't be able to take the APL either. Though my understanding if they won't need it.

Unless of course they come with a rules insert that says they count as a Large ship for the purpose of pre-existing upgrades.
