Star Wars: Rebels

By Jegergryte, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Remember that the target audience is going to be children. Hopefully stormtroopers in this series will be brighter than the baddies were in 80's cartoons like G.I. Joe, but I doubt they'll be much more.competent than what we generally saw in the films. They are one of the iconic examples of "faceless disposable mooks" after all.

God I hope not even the heroes in those cartoon series wasn't that much smarter! :P

Then again they have released a clip where a Stormtrooper sticks his head right up to a graffiti'd wall that has what looks like a bomb stuck to it... don't know about you but that trooper doesn't need to be that close to notice that! :(

So... has anyone actually had an intelligent Stormtrooper as an enemy in their game?

They have to consistently lose to people as inept as a typical PCs. They have to be really dim.

There is a box text in the beginners game that talks about letting the PC exploit the STs rigid and inflexible training to give them the run around for just this reason.

As far as I can tell there's no actual proof that Sylpheed is ErikB its just a currently popular theory.

Lets try and not shun someone for a theory. Just because they haven't said one way or the other doesn't mean anything. After all, I've never confirmed or denied that I was ErikB either.

He just said so up above. He said, "I told you so" linking to a thread where ErikB is speculating on what we were just talking about. Sylpheed didn't comment in that thread he linked because Sylpheed's account didn't exist yet.

And if it is - he seems to have chilled out considerably from his older abrasive ways. Until he starts acting like a ****, lets give him the benefit of the doubt.

AluminumWolf/ErikB was always like this. He would be fine when his posts are sane. I enjoyed them. It's when he goes off the rails that he ends up getting my ignores. Sorry if I don't think 3rd time is a charm for him.

Sturn is correct. He linked to a thread that has nothing to do with his current alias stating claim to it. As I have said in the past, pessimists are never disappointed. The ErikB alias has not been banned or removed as it is still seen, unlike the AluninumWolf alias which has been removed. He has a tendency to reinvent himself with each corebook incarnation. He always starts off all right, but we shall see once the actual F&D beta actually drops.

As to how right he was, it remains to be seen. This is entertainment. They will portray stormtroopers and anything else in such a way as they believe it will help make the cartoon popular. As to whether its canon, it doesn't really matter.

According to wookiepedia, this is canon now.

"The stormtroopers were the elite shock troop of Palpatine's Galactic Empire. They were distinguished by their white armor over a black body glove. In addition to creating an imposing image, the stormtrooper armor was fitted with a wide array of survival equipment and temperature controls that allowed its wearer to survive in most environments, but it offered limited protection against blaster bolts. Stormtroopers were part of the Imperial Army, the ground forces of the Empire. Along with standard stormtroopers, there existed several specialized subgroups, including the scout troopers and the snowtroopers."

So use what you want, its your game.

Me, but then i am the GM.

Edit: And i have among other things the complete G.I.Joe series, the movie, MASK, BraveStarr, He-Man (both series), Defenders of the Earth, Transformers and several others on DVD at home.

To respond to copperbell's question, I've played stormtroopers as having some sense of tactics beyond "rush forward and get picked off by the heroes!" such as making use of available cover and using coordinated fire (particularly in Saga Edition prior to the introduction of squad rules in the Clone Wars Campaign Guide).

That said, I've never run them as being exceptionally gifted in terms of combat tactics, particularly the rank-and-file of the corps. The lieutenants I ran as having a bit more sense (particularly if they were trained in a tactics-based knowledge skill) in that regard, but not a whole lot as Imperial doctrine (particularly from the WEG days) was heavily emphasized as being "if it worked in the past, it'll work now" as opposed to the Alliance's acknowledgement of the idiom "no battle plan survives contact with the enemy" and being more open to improvise or change tactics as the situation warrants.

That was also a part of what made Grand Admiral Thrawn dangerous, was that he was willing to buck Imperial doctrine and try new and unusual tactics and stratagems, as well as adapting his plans in the heat of battle if need be, up to and including pulling out of an engagement once it became clear the objective couldn't be obtained.

I would love if in a lightsaber duel with the inquisitor he pulls out a blaster Ralph Bakshi's Wizards style.

You know that's right. :)

Now I wanna shoot lightsaber-armed baddies with a shotgun loaded with Cortosis buckshot!

Now I'm tempted to introduce Bob the Stormtrooper who survives a few encounters with the PCs mostly through being unable to join in the main fight or caught in the loo until eventually they meet during the Whisper Base and bond over coffee.

Then when the PCs capture the base we learn Bob was sent out on a patrol and when he learns about what happened to Whisper Base he's put on guard duty whilst the Moff tries to retake the base leaving the PCs thinking they may have killed Bob only to learn later on that he was eventually sent to Arda because he was being seen as a jinx having survived too many battles! ;)

Nice to know they aren't being treated as idiots though.

I've always been tempted to introduce Gary the Stormtrooper, of the Robot Chicken fame. =)

And his daughter. And her toy, Mr Fuzzy Bottom...

And the ewok he ran into. Can't forget him.

Avatar did it first (and got a bitter admonishment of his brother, Blackwolf, in as well).

I am toying with the idea of creating Stormtroopers based on Henchmen 21 and 24 from "The Venture Bros."

No special abilities save for a sort inverse of the "strain as wounds" mechanic: All wounds would be thought of more as strain.

No matter how much punishment they take*, they always survive to show up later griping about how much getting blasted sucks.

AKA: That rare blend of expendable and invulnerable

* Yes, I know the fate of #24, but what can I say? I'm a traditionalist.

And a bit about the inquisitor:

I AM SO FLIPPIN' EXCITED TO FINALLY SEE AN INQUISITOR IN ACTION!!!

I've probably missed it, but is there a date published for the release of this show (besides "October")? Want to watch it with my nephew.

Shame that the focus seems to be on Ezra and his Jedi path. A very predictable progression, but I can understand why they took it.

Patience young Padawan

New trailer looks pretty cool to me. Definitely has the Ep IV vibe they're going for.

Any chance they might stat these characters?

Was wondering if Ezra would be Emergent and Kanan an Exile?

Sexy....

Also it's official, ISDs can enter atmo... interesting.

Was just about to say that. I'm not sure if the ship at the :15 sec was a ISD or not, but there was definitly one later on in atmo. I got a feeling, being a aircraft mechanic, II'm going to love Chopper. :D

Oh, and still calling it now: Ex-Jedi dude is gonna die. It was mentioned in one of the previews that the show will transition to start focusing on a central character on the team. I'm betting it's going to be Aladdin look alike. He'll try to avenge his fallen mentor, the Ex-Jedi, who'll probably fall to the Inquisitor Obi-Wan Kenobi style. Anyone want to take that bet? ;)

A Hutt will sit on, and suffocate, him. He'll die slowly, with his little legs kicking and flailing from beneath a tonne of slug.

That's my prediction for the Jedi death.
