I think the pink Mandalorian armor still looks bad ass.
Star Wars: Rebels
So pink is wrong because "girly" things can't be badass. Got it.
No, it's because very often pink means "girly" and because all too often males are regarded as the default and then something is made appropriate for females by making it pink.
Not sure where you got the idea that anyone objects to it because they think something "girly" can't be "badass". It's about gender-stereotyping. It's the notion that because someone is female, they have to have "girly" (to use your term) signifiers. The issue isn't if cartoon X does it. It's when almost every cartoon does it.
As I said, I haven't seen it yet, I'll see what it's like. But my first reaction was that they'd gone: "this character is female, let's make her armour pink". That's all there is to it and it's understandable as a first impression.
Personally I'm more bothered by her boots and gloves having paint splattered all over them, but the rest of her outfit being spotless...
And, from a purely design perspective, humans are stupid stupid animals. If you want to visually denote a character as being female you typically gotta give her huge boobies, or make her pink, red, or purple. So while I don't really like it, I "get" it. (Yes I have an art degree, yes this was covered in more then one class, no I would not trust the majority of my fellow artists with explosives, even if they did have really cool armor)
I'm actually rather impressed Hera came out green and orange with a normal sized chest. Have a feeling I'm going to end up liking her more anyway... Sabine just feels a little like they are trying really really hard to make the coolest female character possible and are headed right for Mary Sue land.
I'm a little wary of Sabine. I always get onboard with a character based on who they are, not what they do. With Sabine, I'm seeing, "she's a Mando! She tags things! She blows stuff up!"... not terribly compelling, from a dramatic standpoint.
That said, I loved TCW and I trust Dave Filoni implicitly. If anything, I suspect that the marketing people are depriving us of a real impression of the character in favour of the whiz-bang factor.

Are any of the other characters that much more compelling than Sabine? Mini-descriptions like that are all we really know about any of the crew so far.

You're right, of course, there's not much to go on. But Hera (my fave so far) I've read described as 'nurturing', which says something about how she interacts with the people around her. Although now that I think about it, it might have been the actress herself who said that, in one of the interviews I read.
But I'm certainly not condemning anyone - I have faith in Filoni. This is all first-impression stuff right here. ![]()

Yeah, the voice actress describes Hera as something like the "team mom".

No, but you could also take it that she's not going to be defined by her "job". It's hard to get across a character in a short soundbite about the show, so you tend to fall back on a few identifiable and distinct points that differentiate them. If asked who is Sabine, they could reply: "she's funny, heroic, likes to take risks" but then we'd be lacking details on the practical role or skills she possesses.
I think none of us are going to know until the show is released. (And based on Clone Wars, not until Season 2 of it.
).
So, if sabine was a traditional drab clad mando that only cared about the mando warrior way would that be any better?
We have, potentilly, a Heroic, non-villiafied mando that has more interests (art) than just pursuing the warrior way and people are complaining about the colour of her armour (which is totally not pink)?
Considering the only canon (as of now) and mass market presentation of mandolorians has been that of bad guys with cool armour, perhaps we should wait and see what her character is like.
As a side note, my girlfriend, as a kid played with 'boy-centric' toys, played more sports than I ever did and I would describe as not a girly-girl, bought when she needed steel toed shoes for work bought ones that were pink. Some girls actually like the colour.

My 3.5 year old girl is tomboyish already. Her relatives gave her an arsenal of weapons (2 bows, 2 swords, armor, 2 helmets, 2 shields, staff, axe, and a flail) for her last birthday. She loves all of them but tends to grab the pink girly ones the most when wanting to give daddy more bruises. So?
Okay. Just watched the trailer. It is brief so I could be wrong... But did I just see that they gave a female Mandalorian character pink armour?
Making the girl warrior look like a character from Heavy Metal I would have a problem with. A splash of pink on her armor is completely appropriate. Don't go overboard even if your heart is in the right place.
This...

Does not equal this....

I also don't think anything I said was comparing what Sabine wears to the heavy metal tart. I think Sabine's armour could maybe keep a blaster bolt from going through her. ![]()
I don't know why you think I'm going over the top, all I was trying to point out is that a character could be a hard as nails warrior and still have, in Sabine's case, some feminine features - possible a fondenss for fuschia, or whatever colour her armour is.

Me using your quote was to point out my daughter's fondness for pink akin to your girlfriend's. The rest of the post was going with the flow of discussion starting with...
Okay. Just watched the trailer. It is brief so I could be wrong... But did I just see that they gave a female Mandalorian character pink armour?
.....not your post. I used your quote, instead of Knasserll's previous one, showing agreement with you instead of him (her?). Sorry for the confusion. I probably should have put in Knasserll's quote in there after my first paragraph. I'll go edit it.....there all good now.
Edited by SturnI don't have to love every aspect of this show, just some of it, and that's ok. The idea is to throw that net wide and draw in as many as they can, to both make money, and continue the universe. So I'm thinking Disney is probably pretty sharp and did some kind of focus group stuff and this style probably scored well for Sabine. I don't like the whole 'tagging' the scene of the crime aspect of this character but I'm also not passing judgement overall until this puppy has at least a season under its belt, maybe two.
Confusion cleared.
So...in order to get this kid's show...I must have the Disney XD channel...Hmmm...In order to have that I must upgrade my DishNetwork programming to the most expensive package at roughly $70/month plus fees.
Ummm...how 'bout, no? ![]()
But, if The Clone Wars series has shown anything it is this: wait long enough and it will become available for streaming on the far cheaper Netflix service.

I was going to say "until they raise their prices again", but then I saw its $70/month and not just $70. Yeah, no. Even if Netflix went $10/month its far cheaper.
So following the threat a bit and the debate generated by Sabines design kinda made me chuckle. I don't think Disney had the 18-34 (or older) demograghic in mind when they designed her, so I ran Sabine's design past a member of the probable target demograghic, my cousin's 12 (or 13, I forget) daughter. Much to my cousin's chagrin, Kali sorta likes Star Wars (she'll watch the movies on her own will at least) and naturally I'm to blame.
Anyhow most I got from her was "Yeah, She looks cool." Trying to get more detail all I got was a shoulder shrug and "I probably wouldn't wear that much pink, but I dunno." *shoulder shrug* Then I got a warning from her mom about corrupting her child further. So the character design is.... Passable? The sample pool is admittedly small here.
I also have to admitt I agree with those who beleive that Jarrus (the Jedi guy) is going to bite it, probably at the end of season one. I see the point why, the whole torch passing thing and all, but its just so... Meh I guess. I've seen and read so many series that do this it's almost becoming a drinking game, never mind a trope. The kid probably is going to be the focus ultimately as he'll probably be more relatable to the target demograghic (again, probably not anyone who posts here), but we'll see.
Personally, I'll probably treat it like The Clone Wars and I won't watch it. Nothing to do with the story quality or anything, its just I find the CG art design off putting. I'll just catch the synopsis on Wookiepedia.

Sure. Just like everyone has to get HBO to watch game of thrones!

Wow, yeah I think you nailed it. Freddy Prinze will bite it, hanging around as a force ghost to mentor Alladin. That'll leave Hera (mom) Zeb (dad), Sabine (troublemaking sister), and chopper (pet/grumpy Grandpa/uncle).
And my enthusiasm just died a little...

game of what? ![]()
Seriously, I don't watch and don't care for it. Needless to write, I've not much use for HBO or any of the other movie channels so asking me to fork over more than what I am already contributing is asking a bit much. As it stands, I find the satellite TV so useless that when the subscription period ends, it is being dropped. Then, I'll have more money for things like Age of Rebellion, Force and Destiny and Kickstarter projects! ![]()

I'm pretty sure you could watch the episodes online at the Disney XD site for a period after premiering.

I just found the channel on Roku. It will be interesting to see if they actually will play it on that channel without my having to 'upgrade' my DishNetwork service. If they do, then my kids shall rejoice.

Using names and places and such is about what I figured they would use the EU for. Did the same with Coruscant. It's the details they were reserving the right to change and rewrite how they see fit.

More or less what was previously described by Lucasfilm Story Group, then -- the ideas may have originated from the EU, but the "new" version will be the canonical one, although I admittedly am not surprised at the respect paid to the old WEG RPG considering how much of the Star Wars EU, period, originated in WEG's books.
