Classic League?!?

By Oxymandias, in X-Wing

I consider myself to be a Star Wars fan. But I never cared about the EU stuff (an abrevation i just recently learned) - I have the Dark Empire comics but never read it and after I saw that Phantom fiasco I never cared to watch the rest of the prequels. I guess I am a conservative original trilogy fan...

And I love this game! The cinematic feeling of recreating battles from the movies and flying ships I have come to love is just so much fun! The game system and mechanic work wonderfully, the balance is great, the minis are beautiful and game time and newbie accessability are big plusses. And the tactical options and squad builing challenges are great too.

So it kind of breaks my heart to see wave 4...

The battles will never again feel the same. I could live with the odd Hawk and accept to see a Lambda in a dogfight, but that was only half ok. With tons of wave 4 ships this game to me will be just another random Sci Fi game...

I appreciate that FFG needs this game to evolve to get better return on their investment (but they could have waited to present EU ships until at least the aces and the big ships acctually are out, plus maybe some rebel repaints, in a year or two...) and I also appreciate that some know these new ships from different video games and book, but to me they have no connection to my personal Star Wars myth.

Anyone else having the same feelings?

Is there any interest for an unoffical format, a Classic League, where only ships you actually see in the Original Trilogy are allowed? Pilots, upgrades, repaints from all expansions and such are all ok, it's the miniatures that matter.

What do you think?

House rules are your answer. You might just have to accept that that may lessen the pool of people available to play against!

I understand your feelings. Having never read about or seen these ships before, (Well I actually do remember the Z-95s from something) it feels a little odd. Still though I wouldn't let that ruin the game.

You continue to build your own squads however you want. You can always take UPGRADE cards from the new sets without having to build squads out of the new ships, ya know? B-Wings are always gonna be my favorite anyhow so they can go through the whole alphabet, aren't gonna match the B-Wing.

I'll have to try to establish an optional standard in my gaming group - like when you for a friendly game ask "How many points", you can also ask "Classic" or "Expanded"... ^_^

OP, did you expect FFG to stop releasing product after 2 1/2 waves? Why would they do that? Expecting FFG to ignore all the Star Wars ships made outside of the original three movies is ridiculous. The ships in Wave 4 are still part of Star Wars, they're just from parts of Star Wars to which you haven't made yourself privy yet.

Furthermore, this game would get boring quickly if it only had 10 dogfighting ships (discounting the Lambda Shuttle and HWK-290 that you maligned).

I am fine with more ships as long as it stays Star Wars I am fine with it. I remember playing many flying star wars games (rogue squadron, xwing alliance) they had other ships in the game that you could fly, I flew them. I wasn't worried about a Classic feel.

I have not followed the story beyond the movies, so I know OF the headhunter, but not read it or anything, but I am fine with adding ships, as if you don't it will be a dead game until the new movies come out.

My question to those that are feeling the same as you, those movies will then be "classic" as Expanded is everything but the movies. so once the say Phantom or Ewing are in the new movies will you accept them as such?

If you don't like the expansions, no one is holding a lightsaber to your throat to buy them. Just sayn.

I find the original trilogy to be a rather tiny and limited blip on the star wars scale, so EU never has and never will bother me. They are great movies, but you can only accomplish so much world building in three average-length films. The expanded universe, both the good and the bad, is the reason I have kept up with the franchise for so long, even after the questionable prequel films

Well, maybe the game will be my introduction into the Expanded Universe, and I'll embrace it all! :-)

I hear of a Trawn trilogy or something that is supposed to be good,

open minded ^^^^^ good attitude you never know you might love some and hate others, then at least you loved some :)

I have no attachment to anything besides the original trilogy. I don't care for the all the extra "wings" or "TIE's" from video games or books. I don't care for the designs much either. It will feel a bit weird to see squads without any original trilogy ships I admit. But I totally accept them into this game. And I'm very glad these EU ships exist so that FFG can continue to grow and expand this game. I'd be sad to see them stop putting waves out just because there are no more movie ships left. I say bring them on!

I for one didn't understand your comments, as I feel all Star Wars, which has all been shifted to canon material EU and all the movies now, are worthy for inclusion to the game system.

They can only do so much with what is shown in the original 3 movies, and this game would go the way of the Great Auk...

The EU material is going to add as much, if not more than, the original movies.. even the prequels would make for their own game, as this one is for the Rebelion Era.. which will include EU ships.

Edited by oneway

Honestly... as long as the game remains balanced and most importantly is fun then I'll play whatever is out there. The cool thing is that I'm actually learning about ships that I never really would have personally considered putting into the game or have even considered in the first place. I had no idea the Moldy Crow even existed and at first I totally went "ew, what the hell is that thing?" but I've quickly let it grow on me. I say bring on more ships, because I guarantee that somebody is going to buy them and play them.

Ok... I'm a moron... :)

Just read some of the other, very lenghty, debates on this subject.

Hadn't realized this was so infected with such polarized positions, name calling, us-against-them and so on...

Quite sad, acctually.

Hope I didn't offend anyone!

(Sometimes it happens when using a foreign language - it just doesn't come across the way intended.)

Anyhow the discussions kind of changed my mind.

I'll make sure to look into the EU (or should it be called non-movie canon?). Already watched that YouTube film based on the computer game about the Tie Phantom and I'll give the Dark Empire comics a chance for starters. Hopefully I grow to like them and can include them in my (obviously totally subjective) Star Wars myth. Because this game is so thematic for me (just the way I like my games) and I hope to keep that feeling.

As for some of the questions raised above - I never was into any miniatures game before, I'm mainly about boardgames, so I'm not used to get my games expanded every 3-6 months and therefore I'm personally in no rush to see new ships. Could also be that I get to play this game (or any game what so ever, for that matter) less frequently than some people here.

Thanks for your input.

And may your dice only show crits and evades! ;)

iam just playing this game cause of warhammer 40k and my buddies paly it alongside with me well and yes cause we loved all six movies not only the old 4-6 just tellin ya i cant wait for more ships to come out and to see more tie variants i cant wait to field them. and hey this gmae can be pretty **** boring after fighting 1000 times the same lists just sayin ;P

more ships equals more choices...I don't care if its EU or something Gosric designed...(props to his cool designs BTW) its all good.. however I do wish FFG had stayed in scale with the new BIG ships, for me that's getting too much like the old Star fleet battles.. but its not that big a deal. BTW when I first got the game I had never heard of EU... to me its still European Union...

As long as you keep in mind that "Star Wars" means different things to different people, you'll do fine. The way I see it, the ships are there to be used, but whether they are is up to you and your group. Tournaments are a little different, of course, but that's the nature of a commercial game with active competition.

For a starting point, I'd recommend the X-Wing series, as its ships and characters are directly pertinent to the game. There's an overall theme, but each book is more-or-less stand-alone, so you don't have to worry about reading them all, or even in chronological order.

I was and still am a lot like the OP. There is a lot of bad EU stuff out there, and some decent stuff. Love the defender, Phantom is UGLY. Love the original trilogy, don't care much for the prequels. I will second the notion to read the heir to the Empire series, it is quite good. Together we will dip or toes into the EU and find things we like, and things we don't. I don't want to see this become a dead game so I will put up with the Phantom. Wait a minute. 4 attack dice? Cloaking device? Crew slot? OK, let me get another look at that heinz 57 Bastard offspring of a yt-100 and an interceptor. .....
