Galaxy Map, could we please be able to download it?

By segara82, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Well there are a few issues with it being in Spanish. It bothers me that it isn't in English for a start, shame on me I know, but I actually want an English version. If I say to players "You can find this in the corporate sector" which is what I would say, they would look at the digital map and say "I can't find the Corporate Sector" I then would spend a few minutes pulling up the digital version to confirm what it says and then say "Sorry...it's listed as Sector Corporativo." Plus I do actually use the terms "Coreward, Rimward" etc. and it would be nice for my players to be able to see what that means in relation to the map without having to translate it. Same for the trade routes. I generally run Edge and the players are doing a lot of trading which does lead into adventures, but it is nice to be able to say "The Corellia Trade Spine" and stuff like that without the need to translate it.

Sector Corporativo is not that hard to figure out. Most of the Spanish on the map is fairly easy and simple to figure out. Also you could just write the English in on top of the map if your players can't really figure out that Sector Corporativo is the Corporate Sector. Someone provides a link to the map that everyone wants and instead of thanks all that happen are complaints.

Maybe someone from FFG could take position to the topic.

Can FFG release the map in english and when not why not.

That is cool and yes don't get me wrong I am grateful, and yes I COULD write at the top of the map the translation but that also looks very messy and I was looking for the map that is in the book. Is it so hard to have a map released in a digital format in all languages for anyone to use?

A digital format map would count as an 'electronic game' I believe which goes back to the 'Why no pdfs?' discussion... Even I may have started a thread with regards to pdfs (deepest apologies to all forum users :D )

It is annoying I agree, but somewhere the books exist as DIGITAL copies SOMEWHERE, either at the printers or FFG's vaults. It's a very good example of anally retentive copyright agreements... all we want as players and GM's alike is two... Yes FFG ONLY TWO pages (or six if you count all three core rule books) as a large PDF....

Better still why the hell doesn't FFG produce a poster map pack like Paizo... surely it ain't THAT difficult?

But... but... they have free adventures (Long Arm of the Hutt) in PDF format... It's not impossible and it's only a map... I don't want to pull the map pages out of the book simply to scan them and then print out copies.

No it is not a game. They release pdf game aids already. And the map exists online in spanish. there is really no reason why we can't have a digital map.

This doesn't fulfil the original request, but it seems relevant so I'll post it anyway. I use this map:

http://starwarsatlas.uw.hu/map/layer/wookiee.htm

Every planet is a link to the Wookiepedia page.

It's also correctly aligned with North at the top, so it may look odd to those of you who are primarily used to the FFG maps which seem to be rotated 90 degrees (some people may not know that the grid references are universal across Star Wars stuff, so a Wookiepedia planet listing will give a grid ref as Letter Number that should work on any Star wars maps, but FFG maps have rotated so you have to look up Y then X (which is weird if you know how to use real maps), but because they use letters and numbers it's fine and there's no way to get it wrong).

The FFG maps are rotated because the map is taller than wide. So across 2 pages rotating makes sense.

Which is the version en Español. Do you have a link for the English version?

Sent a note to the customer service with a link to the spanish version saying hey it exists can we have on in english...

Yes exactly this is what I don't understand why exist a spanish version and no version in english.

I mean who gave Edge Entertainment the permission to publish the map?

And why can't publish FFG the map in english I thought FFG is the rights owner?

You do realize that isn't on the FFG site, but some other company's site. One that appears to be French/Spanish. So, they're probably the one doing the language translations, if they have any relation to FFG at all.

Yes. But if they can put out the map. There is no reason FFG can't.

Right, but they had to get the artwork from somewhere.

Which means that the artwork exists in digital high-resolution format — somewhere.

Which means that we should be able to also get a version of it in English — right?

What am I missing here?

Yes. But if they can put out the map. There is no reason FFG can't.

This assumes that them putting out that map was done legally. For all we know they didn't have permission to put out such a map and FFG is unaware it even exist. It's not all that uncommon. Considering the sheer amount of Star Wars media produced it is hard for anyone to keep up with it all.

The fact that another company put it out and not FFG? Just because it was done doesn't mean it was done the right way, with permission, or even legally. Yes the file exist in a digital format. With how books are produced today that was a given. But we lack to few details to know how and why a Spanish/French gaming company put it out. So we really can't take umbrage with FFG since we don't know the details of how this map was even produced.

And in the rush to complain about the Spanish map (seriously it's easy to use) no one has considered that maybe just maybe FFG doesn't actually own the rights to that picture and that they got that image from someone else? Which may explain why another company was able to put it up in the first place.

uh huh... right...It is FFG's map. The Spanish company is doing Spanish translations of FFG star wars. So FFG would be required to stop that company if it was not authorized. Licenses include language requiring that. It has been up for a couple years. So I am pretty sure it is authorized.

And yes we know about the Spanish map. I don't find it easy to use. Beating us over the head with it is annoying. We get you like it. Why can't we push for one in English?

equivalent to those who complain they can't get game books/resources in their own languages.

Sorry, it would annoy me every time I looked at it. Maybe FFG should stop having translations done for your language, seeing as you find it easy enough to just translate back and forth, you can just use an English version.

translation can is expensive. If companies had unlimited resources I am sure they would do them. But in this case I am just looking for the map that starts in English that was translated to Spanish to be made available to us. It probably would take 10 minutes from a web developer to make it available. Hell in the FAQ it says they are planning too.

I recently came across this: http://www.swgalaxymap.com/

I know it's not high-resolution or capable of being printed out, but I've found it exceedingly useful.

If I'm beating you over the head then I could say the same about your comments about the need for an English version. The 5 or so post about the need for an English version of the map that tend to make FFG out as some kind of bad guy because there isn't one is equally annoying, while we're on the topic of annoying post. Acting like having to translate Spanish is such a big deal or a hard task when most other people have to translate English is also equally .... annoying, while we're on the topic of annoying post.

If you can push for an English map I can point out that the Spanish one works fine and honestly isn't hard to translate or work with.

Actually English is my native language.

That's great! Thanks.

Guys, please, this is an actually useful thread about sharing resources and the useful links are getting buried in arguments. There's no problem at all if some people like one kind of map and some people like another, nobody is wrong. If you want to argue then RodianClone's art thread is a raging 9 page hotbed of political debate right now so go have fun.

You could have left at any time. You could have stopped harping on the Spanish version a long time ago. Odd thing. Every time you say you can use the Spanish version. We say we want an English version. Because sure there is Spanish version does not preclude our desire for one that is easier to use.

Two way street, you could have equally stopped harping about a lack of an English version. I'm not sure why you think you have a right to express your point but I shouldn't express a counter to your point. Or is this just supposed to be "yes man" kind of situation where the only appropriate response on the matter is to join in a chorus of how much it sucks that there is only a Spanish version?

Or you could stop beating us over the head about it. I get it. You like it. I get it. You claim it is easy to use. It is not easy to use for me. And I am familiar with Spanish. Just not familiar enough to use it easily.

So having a different opinion and not posting in chorus with your idea is beating you over the head with it? Gotcha. You do realize all your points in regards to me apply to you. You could just as easily not beat others over the head with wanting an English version. It works both ways.

And yet you continue. Drop it.

Yup!!! I continue mostly because you have no real authority or reason to tell me to drop something. If I want to discuss the matter I as free to do it as you are.
