Marauder with Lightsaber?

By Solomon36, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Man, for a bunch of people who probably pride themselves on their creativity I am seeing a surprising lack of it here.

This is a narrative system. People are not thinking outside the box on this one.

Knockdown: I cut away the floor you are sanding on, have a breach weapon beyotch! I slice at your legs knowing you will have to jump and then I push you with my other hand while you are airborne. Since Jedi are force users you could even narrate this as a force push.

Stunning Blow: We dance until you are under a chandelier and then I cut it down to land on your head. I swing my lightsaber until you back up enough for me to hit you with a door/kick to the face/hilt/etc.

Feral Strength: You go to parry or dodge and I just swing so hard it doesn't matter. I am empowered by the light side with righteous determination for those innocents you harmed will be the last.

Furious Assault: Well if you can't figure this one out, please turn in your gamer license and hang your head in shame.

Knockdown -- how does a lightsaber knock an opponent down, instead of slicing through them?

I don't know about you, but when a lightsaber user comes at me hard and fast I might just back up a couple steps, trip over my own feet (or something on the ground), and fall over. In other words, it's not necessarily the weapon that is knocking down the opponet but the use of the weapon that is knocking them down. Not to mention the fact that getting hit by a lightsaber might hurt a bit, cause you to go all weak in the knees, and fall over.

It's not a good idea to put a jetpack on a creatures that's 50% hair. Flame On!

Yeah, I was thinking about exactly that problem, as part of the reason why I'm actually more interested in the Grav Belt. I'm not looking to fly around like I'm on an Airspeeder Sil 0 and Spd 2 or anything like that, I just want to close the distance much faster between Long Range and Engaged.

To avoid catching your fur ablaze, how about a "jetpack" with thrusters that fire safely away from (perpendicular to) your back...

...and roller-skates...

By your same logic, I could fire Proton Torpedoes from a Sil 5 ship at targets on the ground, and have them take only stun damage by turning around and running into a brick wall. Or I could toss a Thermal Detonator into Jabba's mouth and have him take only stun damage by having to barf it back up so violently.

I'm sorry, your concept of what should or should not be allowed in a narrative system is just far too lax.

The talents in question have to be directly related to the weapon and skill being used. If you want to try cutting away the floor under someone and have them fall three meters to the floor below or arrange to have someone underneath a chandelier that you cut down on top of them, those are totally valid attack methods -- but they are NOT "Knockdown" or "Stunning Blow".

Eh...to each his own. However, it should be a moot point since Stunning Blow doesn't work with Lightsabers, which per RAW use the Lightsaber skill.

Actually, I kinda like the idea of people so panicked by the sight of missiles baring down on them that they run into walls. Good times! The whole reason the universe created idiots was for entertainment. Besides, I can totally see that happening.

It's no weirder then the idea that having the Politico yell at you causes fatigue.

I guess I just don't understand the desire to make lightsabers even more of a special snowflake weapon. They're pretty good but they are probably less game breaking then the Heavy with an E-Web and a ton of skill to back it up.

No system can protect you from munchkins. That's why you get to exclude people. Excluding jerks may not be nice, but it sure is more fun.

So, now that we've all (well, some) have gotten a good look at F&D, what's the consensus on this? I was thinking of fiddling about with a Marauder/Shii-cho Knight combo, making just an utter brute with all power and no finesse.

Parry was written to be non Force-sensitive usable, so I'd say game on.

Considering there are only 3 talents that require Force-sensitivity, Shii-cho is a great choice for non-FS melee character.

You could always just use the clunky rule of buying one of the universal Force trees for your throwdown Force sensitivity price of admission, and access all of the talents in any of the F&D trees that you like.

That might be the best option of all. Marauder -> Exile -> Shii-cho gets me some Force Mojo without being too heavy on the jedi-ness. Of course there's no real rush, since I'm not done playing my Politico yet - not even slightly. I'm just planning for the future and trying the new shiny toys out.

Buying the Exile early on gives you the cheapest Force user ticket price....or your GM could be cool like me and just say when you can afford to buy a FR in one of the trees in F&D you're Force-sensitive............ ;)

Or talk to your GM, see if they'll let you redo your character with a more appropriate F&D starting career, then branch off into Marauder.
