Excited about Wave 4, but...

By ShadowJester2, in X-Wing

Hey folks!

I'm a newcomer to the X-Wing scene, but I wish I knew about it sooner! Gives me the same rush playing X-Wing and TIE Fighter did back when I was a kid, and has made me oh so giddy about Star Wars again (haven't been this excited since seeing Episode 3). And yes, I like the prequels/cartoons.

One thing about the new wave is the inclusion of the TIE Phantom. As much as I loved Rebel Assault 2, and as much as the concept is killer, the inclusion of it dispels the hope that some day we might see a legit Invid Clutch, as the design is, from a quick glance, going to be too similar (the only difference would be the cockpit/fuselage is from a TIE fighter, as opposed to that elongated cigar). I was holding out hope that we'd see the Clutch one day, as its movement dial would be quite unique (X-Wing dial with a red 0 and maybe red 1 turns), and the design is very aggressive.

Also, what's this "Cinematic pack" everyone's talking about? If there's a pack of naught but ship and pilot cards coming down the pipeline (talked about at GenCon or something), I might not lose hope of seeing Eamon and Ace Azzameen.

Oh, I don't know.... it's possible from the description in the books, that Horn was in a Phantom with no cloaking device. That's MY story, and I'm sticking to it.

"Cinematic Play" campaigns will link together the missions (scenarios) that come in the Core Set and the large ships. The rules for them will come with the upcoming huge ships, the Rebel Transport and the Tantive IV. This article talks about it a little: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4312

I wouldn't worry about the Clutch.

For one thing, the ship's shape should have little to do with what it does on the table. The Clutch may out-perform the Phantom, or may be an underperforming ship that is at a reduced cost. It might be able to mount a cannon, or a system, which would give it an edge over the Phantom.

For another thing, there's nothing to indicate that FFG would keep it out of the game simply because it's similar to the Phantom. The Z-95 is similar to the X-wing, and it got placed in Wave 4.

As to your other question, I think you're thinking about "Cinematic Play", which is a new concept. Nobody really knows what it is, but there is speculation that it involves playing tournaments at 150 pts, or perhaps a type of tournament where you have to win a campaign with a set number of ships. But we won't know until GenCon.

By the way, if you like Eamon, you're gonna love my Firespray repaint:

For the record, Cinematic Play and Epic Play are two different, though still possibly overlapping, game types. Epic is going to be the newer tournament format, while Cinematic is going to have story based missions/scenarios that lead into one another. The outcome of one battle will have consequences into where the story goes, and how the next mission/scenario will follow thereafter.
