Learn Current Meta Builds

By SanDiegoBurrito, in X-Wing

Hello all - I'm new to the game (new to tabletop in general) and am hooked. I only wish I started earlier.

I want to get a better understanding on what builds are used at the competitive level. What's the best way to learn the current meta builds in the competitive/tournament scene?

Check out: teamcovenant.com and boardgamegeek.com

Look up the results for the major tournaments. There's a couple threads floating around, at least one in the Results forum. You could also just try googling, you should get a couple of easy hits that way.

Quite a lot of tournament play is also available for review on you tube. You can also watch Will Wheton mangle the rules while Seth Green does funny voices. Note, the only rule Will has a good handle on is that Han shoots first.

Some basic rules of thumb for this game (in terms of a tournament) are as follows:

  • Never use fewer than 4 craft if possible, unless flying with Firesprays or YT-1300s.
  • Most people feel that having more hull and shields to chew through is more valuable than having better evasion. Since you will be fighting a variety of ships in a tournament, try to have a compromise between the two, or figure out whichever you feel is most suited to your play style. Remember, most people don't like Interceptors for being too squishy, but don't like the Shuttle for being too easy to hit.
  • Try to have a squad that is designed for ships to compliment one another, or go all out and have all the units operate at maximum efficiently on their own. If you have a way to exploit pilot talents, droids, or Elite Pilot Talents, use it to your advantage.
  • Never underestimate the importance of good pilot skill, but do be careful about the first rule of thumb. This is mostly for the sake of movement, which is completely key for victory in this game.
  • Think of how your ships fly: study carefully their limits and abilities and think of how you can use this with formation to work to your advantage.
  • Find out what you like to fly! Enjoying the craft you're playing is the best advice I can give to anyone. Then when you figure out what you like, think of how you can work those ships into an effective build, then buy what you need.
  • Play as much as you can. I can't stress this one enough. :3

Remember, how you build your list isn't as important as how you fly it; experience with a list is key. Fly what you enjoy , then learn to break it. Don't get bogged Down in math, quality can trump quantity and its a beautiful thing when it does. Also don't be in a rush to be the first to do DMG, hang back. The first turn your opponent usually exposes his plan and by turn two shows you how he flys. Let him fall on his own sword.
