starting a new character after being devoured

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

When a player starts a new investigator after the previous one was devoured, and some of his fixed equipment is already in possession of other players, what does he do?

You mean like if Joe Diamond was the replacement characters and both .45s were already in use? I'd just not give him a .45.

Or you could give the character a random item of the type missing. Luckily, this is pretty rare though. I honestly don't know what's official, but I'd suspect the "gets nothing" rule is. The usual limit on items and tokens is whatever comes with the game.

I had this problem with Mark and both flamethrowers were in possession of other players. I gave him nothing, but it felt kinda unfair.

Tibs is right - in general, if AH tells you to go and get a specific card, and it isn't available, you just don't get it. There's no list of which cards can be used as 'backups' for each other, and I think if we tried to make one, we'd find it was impossible.

On the other hand, I think it's a fair enough sort of 'house rule' to give mid-game starting investigators a random item because their fixed is unavailable. It's unlikely to break the game.

Of course, if it was me, I'd relish the challenge. Starting as Mark Harrigan, without the flamethrower, halfway through a game against Cthulhu? Bring it on.

There was some discussion about this here .

Seriously. If you had to start as Lola and both Derringers were in play and you drew a Flamethrower instead—good for you! If you needed Joe's .45 and you drew a Map of Arkham? Them's the breaks, kid ;)

But if you start the character with nothing, you're guaranteed to get screwed. I'm leaning towards "random" just because it's no less thematic than the random crap everybody gets to start with.

Only weird scenario would be Pete's Duke. I guess he gets a random ally. His dog ran away and he told his sob story to some guy who decided to help him out a little. Eric Colt will help you find your dog!

Hmn.

If Duke wasn't taken, but already out of the game (or never in the ally deck to start with), I guess I would discard another ally from the remaining ones and let Ashcan have his dog...

That's a good one, and yes I would probably do that too. But if there was nobody left in the deck to discard, then I guess poor Pete would get neither his puppy nor a passer-by to cry to.
