Wave 4: What it means for us and FFG

By Osoroshii, in X-Wing

I meant that the people who go on a certain forum aren't representative of the whole player base.

If you look at MMO forms they tend to be. I've seen it a number of times, where the MMO dev's say that they find the forms to be a rather accurate representation of the over all player base. Now miniature games may not be quite the same. But between BBG and this one, I'd say you're going to see a fairly decent mix of people.

Consider on this form how many posts we see from people asking what to buy, or questions about basic rules. Clearly there's a steady stream of people new to the game coming here and BBG to ask questions and get advice. So to say that only the hardcore post here just doesn't fit with my experience anyway.

Now it's true that the regulars will be mostly the hardcore types. But with nearly 350 people posting in that poll, you have enough people to be considered a fair poll in terms of representation. I mean they base political opinions and campaigns based on a much smaller % of the over all population then that.

Hey, I thought the A-9 was rather interesting! Certainly not as ugly as some of the Star Wars Galaxies origin TIE FIghters. What were they thinking?

There's a lot of reaction to fans who refuse to buy into the EU but I wonder how big of a group they actually are? One or three post comments here about how terrible the EU is, but it seems there are more posters reacting to them than joining their ranks.

The bottom line is this, though: X-Wing has to go somewhere. What direction would have been happiest with the most people? Repaints are boring... players want something new. Prequels are out because X-Wing is marketed to the Rebellion era and interest is slimmer in that period. So we're left with expanding into the EU, which has nearly thirty years worth of material piled up long before the prequel movies were released.

The game is popular enough for FFG to continue expanding it. For you Movie purists I ask where do you think the meta should go? More repaints? How is this more exciting than brand new fighters with new stat lines and capabilities?

I'd say that they're pretty small. Movie fans, tend to not be interested in games in general. I mean you can't really be a Movie Only purist and play things like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, ect... All of that is EU after all. X-Wing was already filled with EU stuff also... So refusing to buy a E-Wing or Tie Phantom because it's EU is frankly a rather hypocritical if you have Howlrunner in your squad.

For you Movie purists I ask where do you think the meta should go? More repaints?

Reprints are an option, but they can't be the only thing released. If all we saw coming out of FFG from now on was reprinted X-Wings with new pilots the game would be dead in a year or so.

Also lets face it, most of the Holy Trilogy types, are not going to be happy with what JJ/Disney does with the new movies, no matter how good or bad they are, those people just don't have room for anything other then their preconceived notion of what SW should be. So those ships won't make them happy either...

When I say that I'm thinking of someone on the BBG who said that he was fine with Ewoks being able to take out Storm Troopers and scout walkers, but Sith Zombies was way too much for him, and proof that EU is nothing more then fanfic.

So yes teddy bears taking out elite troopers is ok, but space magic reanimating the dead isn't.

So - is that to say "Wave 4: The phantom menace"

- I for one welcome our new cloaking overlords.

Hell yeah it does! Who needs FFG to do repaints , do it yourself . Staring at a squad of green A wings right now.

I do, I do...

I know I picked this game up without knowing anything about it simply because it was Star Wars and the miniatures looked awesome. I had no prior miniature gaming experience. And even though this game is incredibly fun and exciting to play, if it wasn't Star Wars I wouldn't bother with it.

I gave up paint minis years ago. I found I have neither the patience nor skill. When I saw this game I thought it over and decided to purchase a few figures just because I liked the models. I had no idea if I would play or if it was playable. Now I'm hooked.

So, for me at least, the main reason I got into the game is because of the painted and detailed miniatures. If I had any grips at all it would be with the Aces. Don't get me wrong I love the Aces and am planing on getting them. But being on a tight budget I feel I've over spent on my interceptors. That bothers me a little since it kind of feels like I've wasted money for extra models. I would have gotten the interceptors but not 4 (four) of them. Now I'll have two that I feel I just wasted money on; I just wish I had known what was coming. Should I wait on the E95 and Defender now and only buy one to wait and see what happens?

Getting back, keep up the good work Fantasy Flight. I enjoy the game and love the miniatures.

You should look at trying out some paint pens, a very easy way of painting some blue strips on a X-wing or some green on an A-wing then using a nice dip like Quickshade.... I believe you would be very surprised how good a quick paint job can look and it's even better when it's done by your own hand :)

Is it really that easy? I have some ideas... seems like some of the paint pens + a good wash is all you need.

One other thing wave 4 portends is a 10pt fighter for the empire. I'm betting on a 10pt droid fighter.

Evade, barrel roll, droid only upgrade. No stress and a crazy dial.

Whether or not it is a prequel droid or not is the surprise.

Tie/D fighter. No need for the garbage Episode wars trash

That's the one I want too! Very cool looking and different enough to deserve it's own model. Do it!

I'm still going to only play exclusively empire, no matter the stats.

Cheers, mate.

There are people obsessed with Star Trek. There are people obsessed with Star Wars. There are people obsessed with Warhammer 40,000.

If anything is different or changes to what THEY THINK or they FEEL is right, they start screaming and shouting and stamping their feet like they own the rights to the franchise.

I am blessed since I am a fan of Science Fiction....emphasis on the FICTION. If one day the Enterprise is sucked into a wormhole and transported to a galaxy far far away, where a hologram by the name of Rimmer commands a fleet of Rebels from the bridge if the Red Dwarf, against a united fleet of Empire, Shadows (Babylon 5) and Cylons (Battlestar Galactica) then I'd think: "that sounds fun".

After defeating the Empire, Shadows and Cylon alliance and restoring peace to that galaxy (far, far away), the crew of the Enterprise, Red Dwarf and Battlestar Galactica begin their long journey home....a journey which results in them encountering Voyager and aiding in a war with the Borg before heading back to Earth with their new buddies Species 8472.

It's good to be a Sci-Fi fan, and not an obsessive compulsive die hard fan of something which is absolutely not real to begin with and therefore not bound by any strict rules.

How about just destroying the Voyager and saving Star Trek from self-destruction :P

That's my call and bring plenty of Narn (G'Quan Class) heavy cruisers. Still my favourite space craft :)

I think there are degress of purism, and these will vary greatly depending on the person. Ultimately, it comes down to whether you like the design and not where that ship first appeared. I think everyone can agree that there are some great designs in the EU. However, I think everyone on this forum will admit to liking some ships and disliking others, you'd need only look at the various speculation threads to see this manifest itself, no-one likes everything.

For instance, I love TIE Interceptors but the idea of slapping a coat of red paint on them strikes me as lazy; it's not that they're non-movie, it's that they don't look very good (which is why I'll be looking to trade mine). Conversely, put a more subtle 'blood stripe' down each wing and it looks pretty good.

The EU ships and pilots are one of the most important thigns to me not that iam german but come on u pseudo captian americans dont think that only people of the Us arep laing X wing it gains favor in germany and other EU regions aswell we have over 12 X wing players in ma small hometown !! i dont want to think of towns like berlin and such where u see more as one games workshop or Games workshop like retailers. just sayin the more fliers we get the better !!!

**** straight comrade i fully agree with u we need more ships !! like the tie agressor and such !!

Don't forget about the new show coming out. I can't believe no one other than me is talking about a possible, if not blatantly obvious, tiein to the new show.

And the V-Wing.

Is interest in prequel ships lower than in EU ships? We probably need a big poll to determine that.

And what about ground vehicles? ATATs and Snow Speeders, anyone?

We're talking about a game based on a move that is almost 40 years old. I doubt that many "casual" fans exist. Either you're holding on to nostalgia, or your a newbie who fell in love with a classic. But I can promise you that very few, if any, people just happen to see Star Wars, kind of like it, but could take it or leave it, and then decide to do the game because "it's kinda neat."

Even for the few of these people who exist somewhere, they're unlikely to be turned off by ships that they're not familiar with being added to a universe that they're not that familiar with.

At least the current wave looks thematically like the original universe stuff. Es and Zs look a bit like X-wIngs. The ties look a bit like ties. What on earth does the Moldy Crow look in the rest of the film universe?

I'm betting that people will be able to stomach the newest wave more than they could the HWK. Purists will say no, but I think they are going to be a small minority.

But a question to the purists: Would you decline to play games against opponents who include EU ships in their lists? Would this lesson your participation in tournaments? Or does your purist aesthetic apply only, or mainly to your only your own squad?

So - is that to say "Wave 4: The phantom menace"

I haven't ever even seen any, so I don't see what the big de-... AARRRRRHHHHH!!!!

ground forces wouldnt fit in this game its a dogfighting game where movement is the key that ground based **** u have fun with 40k if u want

I'm with @soulcrusherex, this is a dogfighting game. If they want to release a separate game for ground battles, let them, but it wouldn't work with this game and its mechanics.

Don't forget about the new show coming out. I can't believe no one other than me is talking about a possible, if not blatantly obvious, tiein to the new show.

I think Rodent has mentioned it, personally I think they will not use the ships from there untill after the show has proven itself. If it comes out and totally sucks, then from a marketing stand point it isn't feasible to create any ships from it..

They have a ton of material they can use from the EU work that is out there, point in case wave 4... I wouldnt hold my breath on something from this new show.

You know, lots of people said that about the larger ships. They could introduce a new game or game mode that incorporates ground forces. A battle of Hoth with minis as nice and to the same scam as the X-Wing stuff would be quite awesome.

I'm with @soulcrusherex, this is a dogfighting game. If they want to release a separate game for ground battles, let them, but it wouldn't work with this game and its mechanics.

I think it'd work as well as capital ships.

And if the Dust Warfare reskin with stormtroopers comes out, done by the same pre-paint people as the X-wing models, I for one will declare bankrupcy in advance to save time.

So case in point. Nobody has a problem with good old Mauler, right? He's a staple of a lot of Imperial lists. Star Wars OG, Darth Vader's wingman...who could object to a face like this handsome fellow?

mauler-mithel_zps2a457645.png

Except, when did they call him Mauler? Or Black 2? Or DS-61-2? Let alone Mithel? Is that his first name, or his last? Pretty sure all Vader said to him was basically "You two - come with me."

DS-61-2 is canon, because he's got it written on his helmet. The rest was made up for the card game, though.

How is there even a chance the new show is going to suck when its being made by a significant bunch of the people who made Clone Wars? I just cant see it being anything other than decent and like Clone Wars a hit with people of all ages :)

Edited by Bren Derlin

I only said 'if' I didn't say it will suck.. I am a big fan of the clone wars, haven't seen them all but tried to catch them online when I could. The new series might be fantastic, I still don't see FFG coming out with ships from it next year. There are plenty of ships they can use from EU and repaints of the Corvette and transport in imperial colors, if they reuse them (Not saying they will, but they could just to make their lives easy).

Anything can happen, just look at wave 4, many predicted a couple of the ships, hell all of them, but no one (if I remember correctly) predicted those exact 4 ships in this one, maybe a couple and something else, or this and that.. But one thing is for sure.. we were ALL surprised that it was those 4 EU ships.
