I cant be the only one who dusted off this old gem of a game after seeing the TIE Phantom will be in wave 4. Ahhhh nostalgia at its finest.
rebel assault 2
LucasArts has made many amazing games over the years. Old graphics don't bother me nearly as much as old control paradigms (ie, no WASD or mouse look), and work on the only Dark Forces source port has been slow going, but I would still put it up against many an FPS. The nostalgia is strong with this one.
(This is more a general reflection on past Star Wars games than it is RA2)

Actually, I found an extraordinary Mac port of TIE Fighter. After getting it working (slight user error there, eheheh…) and playing a few levels to make sure it indeed worked, I ordered a cheap, well-reputed joystick online. Only reason I haven't been playing it more is wanting to wait until the joystick comes in. Once it does I can't wait to hear those engines scream again!

No, there's a source port for Dark Forces called DarkXL, but the latest update is a few years old and Nar Shadaa is bugged in such a way that prohibits progression. I honestly don't even care about the graphics, I just want mouse look.
I liked Rebel Assault II, but it did suffer from slightly curvy feeling levels. I might blame this on the fact that the entire game is pretty much on rails all the time, which is no problem in of itself, but in the levels where you need to avoid hitting walls and such your ship never really would keep still on the case of the X/Y axis. Now, granted I've only played the Playstation version of it, so perhaps this wasn't a problem in the PC one. That said, I really enjoyed the cutscenes since they used actual pilot uniforms and helmets and such to film the pilots. :3
The flying was pretty tricky in the game I remember. Very touchy, especially if you used a joystick. I think I played with a keyboard and mouse for most of it because of that.
Funny enough I beat this game several times, but never beat the original. It definitely was cool seeing "new" star wars video for the first time since the original movies. It's too bad this game and Jedi Knight were the only two to use live action video for cut scenes. But that was during the craze of being able to do it at the time.

I don't think you'll get mouse look with that. Dark Forces was designed to be controlled by the arrow keys for forward/back, left/right turning, and the pageup/pagedown keys for look up/look down. Unless DarkXL has this feature . . .

Source ports have enabled mouse look for a number of older games. I'm currently playing through Heretic and Hexen again with the ZDoom port, which has both WASD and mouse look enabled.
I still got my copy. Sadly it doesn't work on PS3 (even backwards compatable models), and my original Playstation doesn't work anymore. I really wanted to play this again too =(
I have TIE Fighter Collectors CD-ROM sitting in my pc right now. Runs really well on Win7! (only a slight speach stutter during briefings). Also have all the other X-wing series games and Rebel Assault games.
Wow... just typing that takes my back to the nineties ![]()
Scurvey, how did you get Tie Fighter to run? My Windows 7 computer won't run the install program.
