Puzzling over a squad with Wedge and two B-Wings

By Ringo67, in X-Wing

I just bought my second B-Wing and I'm itching to use a pair in a squad. After being torn apart with Han Solo and Marksmanship, I'm thinking Wedge and Marksmanship would be a pretty formidable ship.

Right now, I have this:

Blue Squadron Pilot +FCS (x2) - 24 points each

Wedge +Marksmanshop - 32 points

Green Squadron Pilot +Veteran Instincts - 20 points

I'm not loving the A-Wing without a missile, or at least PTL, but I don't have the points for either of them. I'd be interested in a Rookie X-Wing, but that's to costly, as well.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Wedge + Marksmanship is NOT a good combo.

Marksmanship is only good on ships whose pilot abilities concern Crits, and ships that get multiple attacks (i.e. alongside Gunner).

Try Wedge + Push the Limit instead. Same point-cost, and you get to shoot while Target Locked and Focused every turn.

sorry if offtopic but Draco a Green with markmanship and Cluster Missiles paired with Jan Ors will be using the Talent + extra die on both attacks?

Afraid not. Jan's ability only effects a single attack, and Clusters are two distinct attacks. Same with "Opportunist", which will also effect secondary weapons.

However, if she somehow cleared stress between the attacks (with a Captain Yorr like ability), then she could activate her ability once per attack.

i agree with a previous post that marksmanship could be something else... PUsh the Limit?

u could downgrade the A-Wing to a prototype. as u say its a litle sub-par wout PTL anyway - imo this will make it LESS of a target as players wil likely NOT shoot at it if they have the choice of another ship AND at PS1 it will be able to do double duty as a BLOCKER and FLANKER depending on the situation. this will free up 5 pts for something else.

now what to do with those xtra 5pts?

some options:

R2 Atromech on Wedge + upgrade up B-Wings to Daggers?

replace the FCS on ur B-Wings with Advanced Sensors leaving u 3 points for a stealth Device on ur A-Wing?

replace wedge with luke Skywalker + R2D2 + Draw their Fire? this will give ur B-Wings some protection from crits :)

Looks like I've got some work to do, but at least now I know some directions I can go. Thanks! :)

See, this is why I love this forum. I make a ham-handed attempt to put together a squad, but I know it could be better. I post it here and experienced members will see the shortcomings and come up with a bunch of ideas to fix it.

I've actually been considering a highly mobile Wedge plus B-Wings build:

2x Dagger + Advanced Sensors + Engine Upgrade

Wedge + R2 Astromech + Expert Handling + Engine Upgrade

I would go with

2 x Dagger, Advanced Sensors, Engine Upgrade

Wedge, R2 Astromech, PtL and Proton Torp

Punchy list.

Although I'd like to have a four-ship list, I like this one. Unfortunately, I don't have two copies of Advanced Sensors, and I'm not sure I can justify buying another Shuttle right now just for that. Maybe one B-Wing with AS and the other with FCS?

If you go with FCS on the second B, swap the Engine Upgrade on it for a Proton Torp.

On this topic, has anyone seen much of Ten Numb? I could see him along with Wedge and Biggs being in a fun 3 ship build, and he'd love to take that marksman. Or if you want to have some B-wing fun, how about this?

Ten Numb (31) + Marksman (3) + FCS (2) = 36

Ibtisam (28) + FCS (2) = 30

Biggs (25) + R2D2 (4) + Shield (4) = 33

I like this build. It's rare that I run more than one or two named pilots. But I like Biggs as a bodyguard for the B-Wings.

It looks like its only 99 points. I think I might add Veteran instincts to Ibitsam, bringing her PS up to 8, matching Ten Numb.

Thanks!

A while back I remember someone saying Proton Torpedos weren't worth the point cost. That's why I don't normally use them.

I guess they would work well with FCS, though.

I take it they've worked well for you?

FCS helps big time with torps. FCS can provide the TL and use the action to focus. Torps can be pretty good

I've run this build. It kicks butt and is really good against a swarm. A focused Biggs with an extra shield and R2D2 is a huge pain for the fleet going up against him!

Thanks Englishpete. I'm gonna take another look at proton torps now.

Good to know, Stone37. I can see the B's barrel-rolling in and out of the fray, with Biggs hovering nearby and taking the heat. I like it!

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I suppose it's better than starting another one on the same subject.

After having my B-Wings hit hard with the Heavy Laser Cannon in the recent store championship tourney, I came up with another squad idea. It focuses (no pun intended) on Wedge and his high pilot skill with a couple of Blue Squadron B-Wings and HLC's. Here are the particulars:
Wedge Antilles + R5-D8 + Swarm Tactics + Engine Upgrade (38)
2x Blue Squadron Pilot + Fire-Control System + Heavy Laser Cannon (31)
I figure Wedge will be my opponent's primary target, so R5-D8 will allow him to shrug off some damage while the engine upgrade will make him a little more maneuverable. At least one of the B's each round should be able to benefit from the swarm tactics. And the FCS and HLC should make them pretty heavy hitters.
Any thoughts?

If you're willing to go to a three-ship list I've had success with this one:

Wedge, expert handling, R2

Dagger, HLC, advanced sensors

Dagger, HLC, advanced sensors

Wedge is pretty much a bait ship, with EH at PS 9 he can dodge some fire, but he's usually the priority target and you should just hope to do as much damage as possible before he inevitably dies. Meanwhile the B-wings have four dice at all ranges (and don't allow bonus defense at range 3), can k-turn with a focus token, and shoot before a lot of common ships. The downside is of course that it's a three-ship list with all of the standard problems that brings, but at least the B-wings give you decent durability.
