My thoughts on the Wave 4 ships.

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

My proposals for the new, not yet seen, rules-

1. New Maneuver (Defender)

Side Slip- Executed by placing a 90-degree turn against the side of the ship's base (like Barrel Roll), with the arc curving forward; model is then placed at the head of the template facing the same direction as at start. Another possibility could be...

Weave- same as the yet to be released Lieutenant Lorrir's special ability (Barrel Roll may use speed 1 Bank instead of straight).

2. New Action (Phantom)

Cloak- Simplest would be... Action: Place a Cloak token on your ship; you may not conduct any attacks or be targeted by any enemy attacks. Remove token during the End Phase.

Hmmmmm.....would a sideslip use 2 1-hard-turn pieces or 2 1-bank pieces?

The Side Slip, as I proposed it, would have to be a hard (90-degree) turn, so that the ship is eventually placed facing the same direction but forward and to one side. Personally, I would only make it a Speed 2 option as the other turn templates seem to me to be too long or too short. Using banks instead of turns would not replicate a Side Slip as you would no long be facing the same direction as when you started.

I know you're just spitballing here, but that Cloak would be terribly broken. Hopefully it's more like the cloak in Attack Wing. Still powerful, but not as powerful as always picking when you can be attacked. The lower agility (for a tie) and the shields make it seem like a good Attack Wing Cloak candidate.

Very excited about these ships. The Headhunter is one I've been looking forward to, and the Phantom looks very interesting.

Attack wing cloak may work. Something like

gain 2 def dice, but also focus and target lock cant be used by attacking craft

The new ships, at first glance seem all conquering and overpowered, but their cost is huge, a kitted out Defender cost the same as a kitted out Bounty Hunter, so you will have a very small number in play. Four X-Wings will still be able to hold there own I think.

The question I really have is what will the new cards do to older ships, it looks like some of them will seriously boost folks like Wedge etc.

The dark horse in wave 4 will be the z-95, can you imagine the fun of a few of these with missiles supporting a Falcon or some B's?

I see one problem with missiles on the Z-95: The ship dies quickly. You should have TL+F when shooting a missile. And you probably won't live long enough to spend two rounds to acquire those tokens. So I guess you need extra actions from Kyle, Dutch, Garven, Lando or squad leader. But even then: PS2 shoots (next to) last. It may not shoot the missile at all...

Whilst I see that many intend to fly swarms of the Z-95, it's also really handy to just add one or two as a supplement to a 3-rebel ship build.

Also, I'm quite pleased at the prospect of being able to fly these along with the Firespray as a 'third faction'.

FFG has designed every wave very conservatively, this one seems a bit crazy at first glance but when you consider the point costs of everything it comes back into perspective. Much like wave 3, I find myself interested in what this wave will bring to the table but unsure if the higher costs will really be worth it in a highly competitive environment.

Really glad it's a 'proper' Z95 rather than the redesigned Clone Wars variant. Nothing against that ship, but I'm a stickler for the old traditions and always loved the Z95 :)

Running 3 X-Wings and 2 of these Z's has a nice potential or even 2 X's and 4 Z's

I think this wave brings more variety to the table and I am looking forward to testing some stuff when its out. I am thinking of 3 each, but 4 Z's for purchases.

I really like the look of the Defender so that might see action for me a lot because I like to fly ships I like the look of.

I am also thinking the E-Wing may be a punchy ship, but the model needs to grow on me.

I always hated the look of the E-wing. It just feels like they stole the Viper from Battlestar and tweaked it to avoid IP infringement. Just doesn't feel like Star Wars, IMHO. That being said, looks like an awesome addition game-wise.

You mean the Viper that got BSG sued for stealing the design of the X-Wing?

So.... proper revenge, make an EU ship that looks like a Viper redesign.. lol.. An amusing thought.. haa haa

The Phantom also dies with a successful proton bomb, like the A-wing, very interesting.

It'll be a very interesting craft to fly with its 4-2-2-2 stats, unknown dial and unknown cloaking ability. It seems that we might have some more maneuverable ships in wave 4 (probably all 4 have quite decent to ok [as in X-wing type ok] movement dials).

The 4 attack value of the Phantom was one of the first things that stood out to me. Depending on how the cloak feature works it could be very scary to face off against 3 of these. If the cloak negates attack and defend for the Phantom, then you just fly around until you get a range 1 shot and you have the potential of taking out an x-wing in one shot. Still the cloaking better be darn good to justify the points and only 2 hull and 2 shields.

Since we have been waiting for the Aces since I can't remember when. No really I can't remember. When do we expect wave 4? Should I ask for these for x-mas?

As I recall, the cloaks in Star Wars had the problem of not being able to see out of them. If they go with that, I would assume it would cut down on attack dice.

and 2 evade dice, but since you mentioned the cloak, the evade dice might not even be a consideration. Quarter 2 of 2014 seems like it is way off in the future :(

You are probably right, it would most likely be same/similar to their treatment of cloak in Attack Wing. But, that said, why would my spitball be so broken? They cannot attack you, you cannot attack them...

But while you are doing this, the remainder of your squad is forced to fight without a third of their points (assuming a 100 point battle and a 30-poit+ Phantom). Not a whole lot different from sending a pair if Interceptors or A-wings on a wide flanking maneuver.

One difference, though, would be that the cloaked Phantom will most likely still cause "bumps" and messed up moves if deployed in the middle of the action due to overlapping bases, etc... It'd be like the chaos caused if you tried to drive an invisible car through heavy, city traffic.
