De-ascension

By Calgor Grim, in Black Crusade Rules Questions

Query, does anyone know of any instance where a person has been de-ascended from daemonic status? I would imagine that since the powerof the chaos gods make someone into a daemon and infuse them with arcane power, they also hold the power to cast them back into the mortal realm (assuming that is they decide not to utterly wipe them from the face of the earth or make them into a gibbering spawn).

I'm toying with a unique character concept of a former Chaos Sorcerer who managed to ascend to power thanks to arcane relics and black tomes he obtained to grant himself a measure of daemonic power. However due to such a catastrophic failing in his spell of daemonhood, the gods have punished him by casting him back out of the warp, blocking his memory of his former life and possibly other odd effects.

If this is even vaguely fluff plausible then I will be running with it but I would imagine that the process will require some interesting homebrew rules and customisations. Suggestions for this are welcome.

It would be hard to imagine the powers that be doing anything other than devouring the soul of a Daemon Prince that failed them or some other horrible fate but if anyone had the power to turn someone human again it would be the Chaos Gods.

You just need to come up with a good reason why, either they know he will befall some fate as a human that is worse than any punishment they can give him or perhaps it is one of Tzeench's convoluted and Machiavellian schemes that turning him human again will play some part in accomplishing......

You don't really need any home brew rules unless you plan to give him extra powers as a legacy of what he once was. All you really need is a really good reason why ;-)

Well I was thinking that too. The plans of Tzeentch twist and sometimes make little sense to mortals. Destroying his soul would perhaps be counter intuitive at this time.

I was thinking that, with GM approval, some degree of insanity or derangement. That or possible repressed or pre-bought psychic powers from his former life but the knowledge to manifest it is locked away at the moment.

A thing to play on/tie in with could be one of the "functions" of The Flaming Tomb.

(Paraphrasing here) Mysterious individuals claiming to have been at the cusp of ultimate power, only to have it wrested from them. Doomed to wander the surface of The Flaming Tomb, while being unable to remember exact details.

In my game I have an NPC which has de-ascended, the only thing holding him together is his extraordinary force of will.

The PCs use him as a source of knowledge on what not to do..

Can't think of an established fluff example, but since the Chaos Gods are fickle and as close to omnipotent as any being can ever be I do not see why not.

It can't happen: once you ascend, you are no longer what you used to be, and any physical similarity is aesthetic only.

It can happen: all things are possible within Chaos. You're just infinitely more likely to descend as a rabbit, grox, tau or octopus. Which, perversely, means you might come back as your original self or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Freaking Chaos. Stupid paradox.
