Anyone else notice this?

By Fraggle of War, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So while playing tonight, I notiiced something:

Food.png

Baked potato with a pat of butter, a serving of broccoli, and a big steak - served, according to the picture, COMPLETELY RAW. So, do you think this was done on purpose, to indicate the investigation into the mythos has driven you insane, or is the illustrator a vegan and has no idea what colour properly cooked beef is?

And if it's on purpose, where's the bak bon dzhow ?

Take a closer look on the knife. It should answer your question.

Didn't notice the knife.

Creepy.

Some of us do like our steaks rare, y'know.

If you want weird item stuff, check out the Cultes des Goules (and yes, it does gotta be big for this one).

Plenty of tomes in the Unique deck, but this is the only one with a picture of actual English text that you can read. Here's what I could read from it:

"...were fields of black flowers, each a shade trapped in death, each bloom a twisted [something], each leaf a tiny skull. Crimson-flecked flies sucked at the bloody [something] in the corrupt fields, and the air was filled with a stench of despair. The [something] of death [something] passing and [something] to one another [something] crimson worms [something] gorged..." and that's about all you can get.

Anyone recognize that bit of text? No? Well I did! I direct your attention to page 210 of Games Workshop's classic Warhammer gaming book Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness , published in 1988. Where we find this:

And so on. The artist probably just copied-and-pasted, the cheapskate. They probably thought they'd get away with it, what with it being a twenty-year-old gaming manual that's out of print.

For bonus points, has anyone except me noticed what's so special about this KiY 'Dreamlands' encounter?

I always smile when reading this one's "other" encounter:

But I would love to know what's that about the men in the corner...

'Along the shore, the cloud waves break' is from the actual King in Yellow play, if I'm not mistaken - or at least, the very few bits of it that actually appear in Chambers' stories.

C'mon... someone else must be able to tell me where the 'man in the corner' comes from... it's a real tragedy if no-one recognizes it except for me...

Yupp. First line of Cassilda's Song. Once tried to make a translation that keeps the rhythm and the rhymes, else I wouldn't have noticed.

Seems like I gotta wait 'till someone else finds out who that corner guy is, hmn?

It might just be me and totally off-topic but do dreamlands even have corners? Isn't that like finding the edge of the world?

I'm guessing it's the corner of a room, not the corner of a world as such...

Alright, here's the answer: the encounter comes from the lyrics of a Bob Dylan song called Isis. Here are the second and third verses:

I came to a high place of darkness and light
The dividing line ran through the center of town
I hitched up my pony to a post on the right
Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down.

A man in the corner approached me for a match
I knew right away he was not ordinary

He said "Are you looking for something easy to catch ?"
I said "I got no money". He said "That ain't necessary".

The song is about two guys going grave-robbing, and there are references to 'pyramids all covered in ice' and other weird things. As far as I know, Bob Dylan was not influenced by HP Lovecraft :) . But obviously someone at FFG is a Dylan fan.

Okay, that really is funny ;D

Corinthian - the text was vaguely familiar when you quoted it. When I scrolled down to the blackbackround page, I knew it was from Realms of Chaos. I did love the short stories in the old warhammer manuals. I still have them, including the realms of chaos books. The artwork, text and so on were amazing in those.

I agree - a steak should bleed when you cut it. But it should be on the grill for at least a minute or two... happy.gif

Great detective work on the other cards, BTW.
