Where do they get their info?

By Epiphone2903, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am curious to know about where FFG got their information from for the Star Wars universe. At first I thought the majority of it was just pulled from the movies themselves, but as I read the books I found a few cannon references that make the movies as not the singular source of lore for our game.

I appreciate any help of locating anything that is concrete on the subject of their lore source(s).

Star Wars info comes from many sources, FFG does reference the movies a lot (and well they should), but there's stuff from ancient novels, to comics, and a ton of stuff from the original game by WEG has endured.

Anything specific you're wondering about?

As of right now, there are still different levels of Canon in the SW universe. So FFG is using all of it for the most part. You can google SW canon for a breakdown of the levels. Disney is now working to,correct timeline issues, characters death in one book, but appears in a later book, stuff of that nature. Some things may get left behind in this now one official SW universe Canon. But as of right now, FFG can use anything published in the past 37 or so years. And this is concrete.

They use the Wheel. First appearance Marvel Star Wars issue 8 or around that. It appears in legacy. It appeared in WEG, Saga. And some novels as well. They use Star Wars as their source material for their game.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am new to these forums as far as posting goes but I've watched them for about a year.

Nothing specific really, I just was curious if all the canon is being used. Ive read a good majority and am trying to be able to add a few things to my campaign. I particularly love legacy of the force coukd be wrong on the name but it is a comic book with cade skywalker. The way they bring back the jedi and sith is realky well done and I want the possibility of that happening WAY DOWN THE ROAD.

Well, the great things about this game is, if you like it, keep it, if you don't, then toss it. Nothing stays you have to follow any of it. I my self am not fond of the way the Mandalorians ended up being the next best thing next to God himself, so I don't use that stuff in my games. So, it's your game, do what you want with it. Each of our games are like parallel universes that can't ever touch! We can peek into them due to this cross dimensional forum rift, but we can't get to each other's universes. :) well, that's how I look at it. So this forum not only allows us to communicate across space and time, but across dimensional planes!!!

Woah, that's deep. :)

Some from the Brian Dayley Han Solo novels.

I remember hearing someone on the Order66 podcast, probably Sam Stewart, mention that they often use Wookieepedia. He also mentioned that Wookieepedia wasn't a reliable resource but it was a good starting point. Fortunately most of the Wookieepedia articles are filled with reference footnotes so anyone really wanting to authenticate certain pieces of information knows where to look.

Except to say  YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG, STOP PLAYING THE GAME YOUR WAY AND PLAY IT MY WAY INSTEAD!!!

Ahem.

Yeah, the folks at FFG are (IMO) very responsible and judicious in their use of Expanded Universe stuff. Most of the things come from well-established and generally well-accepted bits of EU lore (such as Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy, Steve Perry's Shadows of the Empire, and lots of stuff from previous RPG editions). The limited time frame in which they're working (the height of the Galactic Civil War) means that they won't be getting very messy with their lore, since most EU novels written in that time frame are very respectful of the film franchise and don't go to great lengths to shape the galaxy (but rather just add a little more depth to certain characters, or create interesting new characters, or "explain" how things in general went down in-between the films).

This is actually true of all their Star Wars games, not just the RPG. They have a very strong emphasis on the Civil War/Rebellion Era, which is kinda trending in geek culture anyway right now. So it is well-timed.

Looks like most of it is pulled from published novels ("official" ones). In the new Correlian sourcebook (Suns of Fortune I think it's called), a lot of it was taken from the Correlian Trilogy of novels. And a bunch was pulled from previous RPGs.

I haven't seen a whole lot from any star wars video games...not sure about comics.

I'm not sure if the crappy CDEF Pistol in Suns of Fortune appeared anywhere else, but it was the cheapo starting character gun in Star Wars Galaxies.

The section on the Chiss race from Wookieepedia reads almost word-for-word like the description in the Edge of the Empire books.

Outlaw Tech as far as I know is a term coined in Han Solo's End. Obviously the Corporate Sector comes from those novels. The Tion Hegemony. Xim the Despot. All from the Brian Daley novels.

While FFG got their universe information from multiple sources like Expanded Universe books, the main storehouse of all Star Wars information is The Holocron, maintained by Lucasfilm's Leland Chee. This information is constantly updated as new books, comics or shows are released and provided to official licensees as needed.

Yancy

Canon in the game is whatever you end up making it. FX - whilst my group has more or less started off on 'canon', they've since run afoul of Mara Jade, brought Cratala (from Beyond the Rim) to work for Jabba (can we say cybernetically enhanced Rancor).

Needless to say, like others have pointed out - use the bits you like, toss the bits you don't. The game is yours, and don't let anyone else tell you what's right or wrong - it is your game.

I myself am not fond of the way the Mandalorians ended up being the next best thing next to God himself, so I don't use that stuff in my games.

Funny you should mention that.... as I am not a fan of the Mandos either. Moreso the over exposure Boba gets for 7 minutes of screen time, stealing a bounty from Vader, and getting his backside handed to him by a blind, recently awoken coma patient, and a buried octopus.... it's not something that, to me, stands out as all that uber.

But, I adore the clones, and Traviss, based them on mando culture. Guess I'm weird like that... I believe the Aplhas, are/were probably the baddest dudes to walk the universe. I'd confidently pit them against just about any similar force.

Sorry for derailing the topic, just refreshing to meet someone else that isn't a mando fluffer.

As to what's cannon, and what isn't... Until Disney comes out with a definitive time line, nobody really knows, outside of the movies. It's really gonna depend on where they plan on taking the universe. I'd hope they would keep the Thrawn stuff, but it may conflict with what they have planned and therefore end up cut.

Sources: too numerous to count so you'd have to get a bit more specific on what exactly. Just make a note and ask on these boards. People here are always willing to help out in terms of star wars goods, and most times, we all have out specialties. Like I hardly know much about ships, the old republic, the comics, or any of that stuff, but I can run circles around most people when it comes to species. So, ask away!

And as others have said, welcome to the asylum.
