Chemical Plant (Terrain) Pic Heavy

By r2trooper, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Here are some pics of some terrain I made a while back. It is the Hirst Arts Chemical Plant molds. I made all the parts from dental grade plaster, and assembled and painted everything. The two pools are colored resin. The Computer console thing is part of a paper model First Light from World Works Games. And of course the minis are from those one guys... Come on FFG where are my mini guys at!?!?!?

So Dex, I couldn't let you totally out do me with your buildings! :P

2P51, post some pics of your Hirst stuff here! It may be nothing elaborate, but but still worth sharing I bet.

I am working on some other First Light things and thinking about making a mini scale Corona class transport. Let me know if you guys would be interested in seeing any of that.

I am thinking about doing some combat stuff this weekend using my Chem plant. If I did use it, I would use up my whole table to really get that long range combat feel in. I'm not sure yet, sometimes using minis can really bog the game down.

Well, let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

I've been looking at those Hirst molds for a while.... seeing this makes me want them even more... you bastard...

Who are you getting your dental plaster from? I've read it's better for making terrain out of but google tends to kick back a lot of slightly shady looking suppliers...

Holy crap...Making use that thing above my shoulders again...

I think it was Atlanta Dental Supply. I use Excaliber plaster I believe. Man, I built these years ago, and have not been casting since... I need to.

I will l look up my order info and let you know.

For the above, I used three or four different molds, and the instructions on the Hirst website for the chem plant. It's kind of like making your own legos... :)

I recommend www.clintsales.com. I try to point people in their direction because they sent me some free samples to try out several years ago. Plaster casting didn't really stick as a hobby for me though.

Check out the hirst arts site. They link to a lot of different sellers there.

That is amazing!

Good work.

Is there a site out there where you can buy/sell/trade completed war game terrain like this?

Great work. I just added some of the Hirst sci-fi molds to my collection last week.

We typically avoid using minis for combat (for the same concerns of bogging down the game), but maps have come in handy for more social encounters to help the group understand who/how many people are present. The party at the cantina on Geonosis in Long Arm of the Hutt is a great example. There were lots of NPCs and there are 6 PCs in my group, so lots to keep track of if you're trying to just visualize it all.

My initial plans are to build a modular cantina for similar social encounters and some basic set pieces like above to help give a sense of spatial awareness for things like street battles and whatnot. I'll keep a supply of accessory bits ready to place for when the PCs take cover behind crates, barrels, etc..

Aerilyn, I don't know of any websites that sell this stuff in finished form. Hirst Arts has the molds you can buy. You would probably have to find someone who makes this stuff in final form that would be willing to part with it. If you would like some more pictures or info about my work, shoot me a PM.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. This bad had a lot of work put into it. I can't even imagine the hours I spent on it. The plaster is top grade dental plaster, it could take a beating and still look great. The round containers are made from thin cardboard, but filled with the plaster to make them SOLID and strong!! Again, thanks everyone!! I hope to get the casting bug again, and make some pieces for my game, and of course to show off! :)

I'd love to see more of your stuff. I've been browsing various terrain building sites for inspiration but there's not nearly as much sci-fi stuff as there is fantasy terrain.

Awesome!!!

I know some people have a difficult time using terrain for this game, but the group I play with love it. It took us a bit to get over measuring and keeping it more abstract, but after getting over the hump it is so aesthetically pleasing. I just love making stuff and feel that I need to. Our GM does a great job and he enjoys the toys too.

Love the stuff!

I see the First Light engine block from World Works Games. Ever build the whole ship? The shuttle is pretty cool.

UHF, I do have the PDF for First Light, and as you can see, I have started building the ship. I am not done with it yet, but maybe next week I will work on it more and actually get the stupid thing built!! Did you use the the model in your game?

Before we started EotE, I was running a some WEG and really wanted to do a starship crawl, having the guys fight their way through a capital ship, but it never happened, and with FFG, it seems that that idea might never happen with minis.

As a total side note, speaking of minis and all, that is perhaps the greatest thing about WEG, they made their mini game totally compatible with the RPG. Very minor conversion, and you could run your Player Character in with squads if troopers. I thought that was totally awesome, even though we only ever did once or twice, back then you had to paint your own, and funding was very, very limited.

That is what I hated most about WotC. They made thier games to be played with minis, you could almost not play the RPG without them, yet the minis were a completely different game and you could not have your PC in a mini game. And then the rarity thing...nothing but the $$$ with them.

So FFG, please make miniatures that can be used as it's own game, but can also convert the PC group into mini stats for tactical mini scale combat!! That way we can have the ultra cool narrative combat scenes, and maybe once every couple of games have a huge battle using minis and more detailed and focused combat rules.
