More female characters please!!!!!!!!

By crimhead, in Talisman

I introduced this game to my daughter and my niece yesterday (ten and eleven years old). They loved it, which is good because I bought it mostly to play with them.

However, These are little girls, and they don't want to play trolls and ghouls. In fact, they want female characters (preferably pretty ones). I fear they will soon get bored of playing only the Prophetess, Sorceress and Dark Cultist. There is currently a five to one ratio of male to female characters!

This is a real shame because many of these characters could well have been female. Regardless, my intent is to request not to complain. I see the Gypsy is coming in the Dungeon, which is good but not enough I fear. The little girls need variety to retain their interest too! Please please throw them a bone - for daddies and daughters everywhere.

PS - loving fourth edition revised, keep up the great work!

Edit - there also should be a shoe store somewhere in the Dungeon, and an heroic talking dog available as a follower. Just kidding (but serious about more female characters).

There is an Amazon character in the dungeon also. I also think there is a dog follower in the dungeon as well.

In the News section, there was a pic of the Philosopher character that's coming in the Dungeon expansion, looked like a female char to me (my taste if often questioned though lengua.gif ).

(or a medieval, effiminite man partido_risa.gif )

The Amazon might help :) That's great, actually.

I'm not so sure about the Philosopher - I can't see the prominentia laryngea, so you could be right.

Looks like it's a man, at least the text above the character card addresses him as such. I think effiminite voice will be a must when playing that character partido_risa.gif .

"Oooh, I'm a pretty boy!" gran_risa.gif

It would be easy enough to make female versions of the other cards using the templates at Talisman Island. The only thing that might be a problem would be the minis...

Five of my 20 "familiar faces" are females. The Ranger and Enchantress in particular are both pretty cool, or at least my wife thought so.

I looked a Familier Faces and liked what I saw. I made some characters for 2e that I purposfully chose famale art work for.

I do not have children but I do have a wife as well a lady friends that enjoy games. I think putting forth the effort to make female versions of the characters would be worth the trouble.

Ding! As I typed that last letter it occures to me it would make a great expansion that FFG could produce!

Women of Talisman.

Female versions of the classic characters with tasteful art work not designed to titilate young males. Add in some interesting new adventure cards, (some gender based interactions to make it matter if you are male or female), some minis and you have a great product.

Actually I was surprised that some of the original characters were not changed to female. The Elf and Thief are character types favored by lady gamers all ready.

I agree that FFG must add more females to the game.

Talisman is a game for everyone, not only for men...

Maybe that FFG will take a look at this topic

If you have a look through the D&D minis game you can find a small selection of female adventurers that you can plunder for making female versions of Talisman characters.

I've mocked up an Elf for you based on the Autumn Wind Ranger mini. There is no reason that it cannot be a female Elf!

That look very good. I am sure that woman will like this gran_risa.gif

Agreed... nice pick, Jon! Like others... I too have wondered about direct female alternatives to the standard male characters.

Great work.

It might be worth investigating further... I'd do it but I'm juggling quite a bit at the moment ;)

I see that there are some characters in 2th edition that could be womans

Herbalist, High Priestess, Mermaid, Sprite, Valkyrie,

and ..White Witch and Witch Doctor( Ugly Womans lengua.gif

All of the characters could be done as women, only a few would not be because of asthetic appeal. The Dwarf, Ghoul and Troll are not likely candidates but that could just depend on the art work.

I will post my half giant soon, she is a good answer to the troll. My plan is when I make any more home brews they will most likely be female types.

Perhaps if we keep this thread warm FFG will come out with a pack of woman characters and minis.

Off course, most characters can also be made as womans.

From my opinion, it seems that i like more men characters than woman characters lengua.gif

That would mean that 5 woman characters ( as stated in my previous post is enough for me. Those are the ones that i like to see as womans. Nothing more, but if FFG could made other woman characters then i must accept it...

To add something to this topic, John Goodenough has answer the question about female and male characters.

-----------------

Question:

Being as Talisman and fantasy gaming in general seems to cater for a male audience I was wondering if the game will get characters and creatures orientated towards female players.

Answer.

Most of the expansions will feature a balanced mix of female and male characters, as well as encounters in the Adventure deck. I think the best designed characters and creatures have a universal appeal to any gender. The Amazon character for example, will appeal to anyone who wants to play a proud and fierce warrior.

-----------------

Forgive the necro-post but I thought I'd just mention that the new Battlelore Heroes expansion has a nice bit of art available ( for home use ) if you wanted a female Warrior or Wizard...

(I've reduced the size for the forum, but you if you save the pictures they will be the original size)

I will be looking at all of FFG's wares at Gencon to see if there are any nice minis that can be used for Talisman fodder...

Very nice. I still would like to see a female character pack marketed because not everyone makes their own cards, I see it as just a good idea to sell more of the product.

GenCon Indy is just 1.5 hr drive from me but I just can't swing the cost this year. Have fun!

More female characters would be great, however I must question an alternate for the elf....come on hes terribad. Great picture, and with most alternates, Games Workshop/Citadel Miniatures, does produces a lot of "alterate" figures. Also don't be affraid to shop models from "cheaper" table top games, like "Chronopia". If you have the will you can find more than enough females to suppliment the current game. Again though, I must agree more females are needed....Why not a female troll, or female dwarf? Ugly but it still would make the point females are welcome in the Talisman World. Its just not fair the game seems centered around males. My wife plays a fair amount as do most of her mates.

Lastly I will say if they lost interest due to a lack of females, they arent true talisman fans. Its great you play with the youngsters of your family, but it shouldnt be a forceful play (specially cause the dark cultist is broken) it should be because they've grown to love the game, even if you started with giving them only the female characters.

Some of the women that I have played talisman with bemoan both the lack of female characters and the rather stereotypical portrail of all of the female characters/creatures in the game. Talisman's depiction of women (especially in the main game game) is pretty old fashioned and, according to some of my friends, a bit degrading. The women in the game (not my friends gui%C3%B1o.gif ) seem to be either very attractive (who is that hottie by the fountain of craft?) or old and hideous (the hag - so ugly that your followers have to leave you!). The roles they occupy is also fairly archaic: why are there no female bandits? Why are there next to no female fighters?

All this complaining aside, overall I still love playing talisman 4ER... and so do my female friends. So, perhaps you are right about your "true talisman fans" comment...

And in my last game (no females playing) the major highlight was a running joke about how, when, and why the Sorceress was beguiling the other characters, followers etc. Oh, and the major highlight was picking the priest for a challenge and still managing to win (despite not turning any spirits whatsoever into craft points) gran_risa.gif

i think FFG will have to do the escort, cause fantasy's ambientation... and i would like to see the Vestal, or one character similar to Lucrezia Borgia (a cruel woman of Italian Rinascimento, cynic politic), or the female priest (like oriental religions of ancient people), or the Nymph, Naiads... i think there are so many possibilities to do pretty female characters, other than surely female pirates, female warrior elf...et cetera. And cartographes (ok, i'm kidding for this one :P ? :D

My list for female types

1. Fairy

2. Mermaid

3. Princess

4. Wench

5. Tavern Maid

6. Animal Summoner (Human Female)

7. Geisha Girl

The Female players would probably be happy with the coming of 3 new female characters..

Mephisto&FFG offers:

Illusionist, Courtisan, Black Witch and ( Magic Apprentice?not sure is she is a woman) to the game gui%C3%B1o.gif

Oke womans, grab that magazine !! gran_risa.gif

PS: not sure if they are here on the forums... ssst

(but this topic has been made.. mmm)
