Rules on skills

By Hakon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

We had an argument today over weather a character has access to all class skills after character creation as class skills, or weather he only gets 4 of his potential class skills that he invested a point into.

Here is what it says for every class, right after the title of the class.

He automatically gains one rank in four of these skills (of his choosing) without spending experience, and he receives a discount when he spends experience to purchase ranks in any of these skills.

the fact a comma is after the word "experience" emplies that the "any of these skills" refers to the "four of these skills (of his choosing)".

if a full stop was used this wouldn't be a debate, and i can't find a clarification anywhere.

if someone has access to proof that you get all class skills please help me persuade my gm, or if a member of ffg can help please do.

FFG hardly looks at these boards, at least they never reply. There is direct line to them here.

As for career skills, I'm pretty sure it's all listed, not just the ones which are chosen for free ranks. I see no reason to limit it to only the ones which he puts free ranks in. That's just silly, mean and - in my opinion - really poor adjudication, on the border of being a bastard-GM.

Lack of comma wouldn't change anything, and its presence implies nothing. I'm always amazed at how hard someone can work to misinterpret something in their favour...

Nope, it doesn't. A comma before "and" is used to coordinate two independent clauses.

thanks i'll try and let him know that.

The character marks all eight skills listed as "Career Skills", and all eight of those skills receive the discount when purchasing because they are Career Skills.

Four of those Career Skills the character gets a free rank in.

I believe this is the correct interpretation.

You get the free ranks at creation and then may spend xp to purchase any, including the original four, as career skills thereafter.

CRB p. 92 speaks about how a player should have delineated what were career skills per their career and specialization at creation.

All become class skills. When you buy into a second specialization you get all of that spec's bonus skills as career skills also. If it was only skills that you got your free rank in then that would be useless.
