Some help with obligation

By Yepesnopes, in Game Masters

Hello

I have the following situation:

During the last game session, one of the two freighters of my players was reduced to 0 hull trauma during a combat. It is a Gthroc 720, an repairing the whole thing costs a lot of credits 28x500 crd = 14000 crd. A money the party does not have right now.

For this reason I gave them the opportunity to get some obligation with one of their patrons, Sinasu the Hutt, and he will take care of the costs for the reparation.

The question I have is how much obligation will be appropriate? On one hand it is 14000 credits, but on the other since they have another ship (the Krayt Fang) I know that they are not that much enthusiastic in spending much money, neither in obtaining more obligation.

If they go with a Hutt, I would consider a 10 or 15 point group obligation: Favor or Debt. I would lean more towards the favor depending on group modivations because it makes a more interesting plot line for a couple sessions.

Yeah, I'd say start low and give it room to go up if they start missing payments.

they don't want obligation and they dont want to pay? can they sell the ship for scrap?

Even if they sell the ship for scrap you can give them some Obligation on it, say if the registry number is tied to illegal activities. I wouldn't let them get out scot free in pretty much any case.

Sure they can. That is no problem. I am just trying to lure them to some extra obligation ;)

I need of your wisdom again.

Will you see fit to get a whole new light freighter by changing it for obligation with a patron of the PCs? If yes, for how much obligation?

Is it a like-like exchange or a different ship make/model?

If they flat-out just wanna have 2 separate ships and have no way to remotely pay for the new ship, I'd give them like 15-20 for it. Seems like a case of want, not need.

It is a different ship.

One thing to consider, Obligation is huge.

IT sounds like you players are toying around the edges of it seeing what is best.

In reality no obligation is good, but it will solve the short term problem of a ship.

As long as they dont keep using obligation as a get out of jail free card i would say ok. but the moment they hit that Obligation debit card again... pow.. make em pay..

In the end, exchanging a junker of any kind of ship is not going to be worth the full value of a working one, unless you're trading military hulks for freighters, and that doesn't seem to be the case here. A junked freighter is straight-up not work a working freighter in trade-in at a fair dealership, let alone the usurious, scammy kinds of places in the Outer Rim.
