So, Darth Vader...

By QuinnCee, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So his card says that he 'may take 2 actions in the actions phase'. So Darth Vader moves, then he takes 2 actions (we'll say focus and target lock). Later during the combat phase does Darth gain the ability to use both a focus and target lock in the same attack phase? I know during the actions phase he can take 2 actions, but can he spend 2 actions in the same round?

Spending tokens is not the same as taking actions, so yes, he can use both a target lock and a focus token in the same attack phase.

If fact, with the Push the Limit upgrade, he could Focus, Target Lock and Evade all in the same Activation Phase and use all three the same turn.

As Gullwind said, yes.

That's a common misconception.

Spending tokens is never an action.

The entire effect of a focus/evade/target lock action is to gain the focus/evade/target lock token. That is the only thing the action does. Those tokens can be used to do various things at a later time, but that is reliant only on having the token regardless of how the token was gained.

And that's what I was thinking. I wasn't so concerned about how he gained the tokens. During the action phase, he can take 2 tokens. I totally get that taking a token and using a token are different. I just wasn't clear on the usage part. As I saw it, Darth could take 2 action tokens, but I didn't think he could use them both the same round. I figured the 2 actions was kind of like I 'he can use one or the other during the combat phase', depending on what token served his purpose at that exact time, but as you all have stated, he can take 2 action tokens after moving, and perform those 2 actions during combat, and using PTL potentially makes it 3 tokens taken and 3 actions performed? ****.... I guess that's what makes his pilot ability unique.

I'm not arguing about it, I'm just trying to understand it better.

Just keep in mind that a ship can't take/perform the same Action twice in a round, not even Free Actions so no double Barrel Rolls, Focus, Evade or TL for him or anyone else (with some "technical" exceptions where for instance you assign a Focus Token on Soontir Fel when he receives a Stress Token, and thus he doesn't take the Focus Action, the token simply get's assigned)

Word... I appreciate the feedback. I have to say that some of the rules of this game are quite open for interpretation.

Hence the expanding FAQ :-)

You won't find anyone to argue with that. The rules are generally pretty straight forward and the rule book can get you started and playing quickly, but it fails pretty hard once you start getting to corner cases. The FAQ helps with a lot of these issues at least.

You may note people mention attacking with TL and Focus fairly often around here and that is being done by pilots who do NOT get "two actions" during the action phase. Vader's ability to take two actions just makes this easier to set up.
