Explosions as temporary obstacles...

By Veritech, in X-Wing

I did a search to see if this idea had been brought up before, but here is basically how it would work. From the start of the combat phase, till the start of the next combat phase, when a ship is destroyed it is replaced with an explosion template. Each template cut to the size of the ship base. This explosion tile represents a temporary additional obstacle in combat, follow standard obstacle rules.

All you would need is to print appropriately sized explosion images and glue them to mat board, you could cut them odd shaped to allow for more realistic table additions. Unless someone could provide similar sized explosion tiles available online, I can get mine from a world works game I bought and dl'd.

Thoughts? I don't see this causing imbalance, just adding a strategic problem to the game for both sides to suddenly deal with.

Also I will post pics and a report on how it works in gameplay when I have the ability, currently waiting two weeks for my new home and technically homeless atm.

Explosions in space are unlikely to cause issues with debris. Unlike in the atmosphere, space is a vacuum and as such there is no air resistance, nor is there strong gravity. So when you have an explosion in space, and matter is ejected off at speed and doesn't slow down, thus it clears the area of the original ship quite quickly.

The exception to this would be capital ships, but for the extra effort, I don't feel it is worth it.

Have you seen StarWars movie explosions? Those would block view for shooting rules, also I could believe fragments of debris still clearing the area, could interfere with actual shots. The ships of StarWars travel at pretty impressive speed.

Maybe with the alteration that large sized ships ignore fighter sized explosions for maneuvering, standard combat rules for obstacles otherwise.

I just thought it was a good random element to add in, I could see the tie swarm bunch totally nixing any idea like this though now that I think on it...

Edit: I am aware how real space explosions work

So what your saying is the Star Wars universe is fiction...Dude, you just blew my mind!

I know, and now we need to have a chat about Santa Claus...

I like the idea, but I would use them for the cover effect only. Ships flew through explosions all the time. They should not damage other ships, but a burst of cover.. That could be fun, tie chaff.

Maybe even cause a stress flying through it.. it could be a cool effect. The stress being generated by the uncertainty of what could be on the other side, the possibility of another ship or what have you...

Stress would be interesting, but I would only have it add one to an unstressed ship, a second stress token would feel too putative to me, especially since flying through explosions is cool. Alternately it could be an attack die with stress on a hit or crit.

Id suggest stress only. maybe for a wingman as well if that wouldnt get too awkward. Luke flew through a huge explosion and Biggs seemed more stressed than he did

On the same line of topic... what if an Ion weapon was to get the kill shot on an enemy fighter, that miniature is then left on the board (maybe with a crit and ion token on it to mark it) and treat it as an obstacle as it has been fully disabled.

Or to make it interesting it could move at speed 1 straight until it collides with an obstacle or runs off the board....

Or maybe they would explode after one or two movements of 1 forward?

Reminds me of Starbuck enjoying the rain
