Dex's Workshop (Terrain)

By Dex Vulen, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So... I think I have mentioned before that FFG's SW game has really gotten me back into the hobby. So much that I even got into terrain making for our games. I am completely new to the hobby, but have some experience with miniature painting. I had always wanted to make terrain and I gladly used EotE as my excuse. I spent hours watching videos and invested in some tools and material. We have yet to use the terrain in the pictures here, but will at some point. I have learned a ton and will learn plenty more I am sure.

I would appreciate all tips, blog links, video links, likes/dislikes, suggestions, ideas, ANYTHING to help me with a new found passion.

Enjoy

Of course the Stormtroopers had to show on Market Day.

What are the buildings? Foam core board I assume. Your obelisk looks like foam you took a hot wire cutter too.

I loved doing stuff with Hirst blocks. http://www.hirstarts.com/ Very robust for repeated use, as well as, sturdy when you are doing things with it.

Wow...... I'd love to play the old WEG Star Wars Miniature Battles on a setup like that!

Very awesome!! Can't wait to see more.

2P51, I am also a huge fan of the Hirst arts stuff. You'll have to share some of your work. I will try to get some better photos and put them up.

I never did a lot with it, not the really elaborate stuff. A kit tower, a home brew tower, a sci fi bunker, some ruined walls, etc. Really adaptable for table top mini terrain and made with good dental plaster very robust.

Thanks guys!

Foamboard and quarter round for the buildings. I may move into the Hirst stuff at some point, but I am enjoying all the little work at the moment.

Oh, the obelisk is foam cut with a box cutter and hotwire engraver.

I've got a hot wire cutter somewhere still. Always liked making rock faces. Honestly foam board is probably easier in a sci fi setting than Hirst.

I had a huge missile idea as a centerpiece I never did. I thought about a pringles can or tennis ball can, top of a Leggs panty hose container for the nose and a yoplait yogurt cup for the nozzle. Assemble, paint, various plastic bits and doo dads, and tah dah, a big missile centerpiece for a table. Same idea was maybe just the top end, and set it up as partially emerged from a silo launch site.

Loved diorama stuff. Good site http://www.coolminiornot.com/

Storage is going to be another issue altogether. I think I have it under control at the moment though. I am currently working on a space station/mad scientists laboratory. I am thinking that I can use the hallways and rooms for both and just swap out props.

Dude you are a GM god. Do you live near me? No..... *weeps*

Battle Systems is really awesome. My concern with it is price point. After you make your initial investment in tools, terrain is cheap to make and a whole lot of fun. Granted it isn't the same quality, but...

Just a player. I am trying to make things that will fit in our campaign, or any campaign really.

I'm going to find out where you live.

And steal your stuff.

Sorry. :(

For the record the stuff I linked was a 3D tile set that they are having a company print out and have pre-made for you.

Think of the D&D tiles. They come in cards and you punch out the pieces. Then you just slip the pieces together. I'm way more into these due to how little time it takes to make them.

Talk about bringing the A game to minis, way to go Dex!

Thanks for the tip on battlesystems, Daniel!

Been a little bit since I have posted anything in this thread, so I thought I would throw something in from last nights session. To cut to the chase, we had a blast with this encounter. Gand is very thankful to the party for making short work of this BBEG. He managed to avoid getting eaten 2X's, and I don't think his luck was going to hold out much longer.

WOW. Please share the backstory on this set up! That looks incredible!

I made the rocks and the table. Our GM made, The Worm!

We are trekking through the desert to get back to our ship. See, we made some people pretty mad somehow and they put a hit out on us. After taking care of that situation, we went to get payback. After a fun little chase, our speeders blew up. We missed finding the explosives placed on them by the bad guy. (embarrassing I know, but after finding the tracking device we thought we were in the clear)

As we were gathering ourselves from the wreck, we spotted a bunch of droids being air dropped near our location. We started off towards our ship in an expeditious manner while trying to stay tactical as possible. As we moved out, and with ever increasing resilience rolls as the day went on, we got into it with an Assassin Droid. Pretty easy fight with it only being one.

Next was a sandstorm environmental encounter that did a number on our mechanics strain.

An encounter with a bunch of 'sand people' that we managed to scare away and not have to fight.

Then... big perm, I mean Worm...

Gand failed a perception check for the worm and rolled a Despair. (it was moving under the sand, give him a break lol) The worm tried to eat Gand, but failed. Knocking gand to his feet and taking him high in the air on his head, Gand managed to get up. The worm flung Gand into the air opening its mouth wide wanting to catch the little bug. Gand managed to move just enough as he was falling to land and get stuck in one of its mandibles. Facing certain death, Gand opened fire into the gaping wide open mouth of the worm (Triumph!) The sting of blaster fire startled the worm enough that as it jerked it's head, Gand fell to the desert floor below. More blaster fire and hits from a vibro axe persuaded the worm enough to go find another meal somewhere else.

That entire post was full of win. Awesome, Just pure awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Foam rubber rocks or Styrofoam and what did you use to cut with?

Pink insulation board and a utility knife

Have you ever used a electric hotwire cutter?

Yes.

Funny enough, the stuff that I made with it hasn't came up in play yet, so I haven't posted any pics of it. I will probably re-due them since I have learned a few things since I made them.
