Trying to Find Cannon nemessis who has no story past ABY0

By Atraangelis, in Game Masters

Hello folks,

Im trying to find a cannon campaign nemessis who is alive but has no EU or Cannon Story past ABY0.

I was thinking of using Darth Maul as he did splinter away from the Emperor and try to make his own Rule of two with Opress, of course we know Vader killed his Clone just before ABY0.

Are there any other ones you all can think of???

I've been considering ways to work in an older, grizzled Cad Bane or Hondo Ohnaka somewhere into our campaign.

They're two of my favorite bad guys from the Clone Wars and I'd love to roleplay them as the GM.

You can always subvert canon...

What about that white skinned bounty hunter that was a sneak preview in Episode one, was suppose to be a big deal in episode two and fell off the radar pretty quickly?

That's Aurra Sing, she was also pretty badass in the Clone Wars!

Mas Amedda, he's the Chagrian who advises the Senate under Valorum and Palpatine. The blue-skinned alien on the podium who looks like a Twi'lek with horns.

He's one of Palpatine's henchmen from WAY back (his service to Valorum was just to set up Valorum's fall). He's the one who manipulates Jar Jar's senatorial career. Not a Force-user, but lots of interest in Sith artifacts and lore. He survives the Clone Wars, and remains one of Palpatine's top advisors, leading expeditions to recover various oddities. And he has no hard story or death after the rise of the Empire.

Now I'm interested, and I might have to work him into my campaign.

Nevermind he's dead

Anyone that is dead could have a clone.

A truely inventive writer can bring someone back from the dead, besides just using a clone.

But you are looking for a clone war type character. or even a minor one from Attack of the clones.

You can always subvert canon...

"I am altering the canon. Pray I don't alter it any further."

I plan to stick mostly to canon for the big stuff. However, even the films are considered "historic records" and there may be small details that history got wrong, or there may be conflicting records. (was Shaak Ti killed by General Grievous, or by Starkiller?)

You don't even have to be inventive. Look at Darth Maul and Boba Fett in EU.

Boba Fett crawling out of the Sarlacc I have no problem with. Darth Maul coming back in any way, by any means, is just wrong.

I am working on (read: thinking about, but haven't statted a thing yet) a scenario where a technician or gadgeteer attempts to reactivate a Federation Droid Army that's been shut down and impounded after Anakin ordered the complete shutdown. I think I read somewhere that the battle droids come apart on shutdown ("they'sa broken") to prevent them being captured and used against the Federation. So the tech wanting to restore them would have to set a few things up, like a central command, and some instruction for the droids to handle the massive repair operations.

I'll want to do some further research to make it a little more canon, but the point is to have that all go wrong, resulting in a self perpetuating army of droids (robotic zombie apocalypse), with the "Nemesis" being a rebuilt OOM-9.

Clone Wars will be your best bet. Hondo, Cad Bane, or Embo would all make great nemesis.

Asajj Ventress is still alive. Not sure how much of a bad guy anymore though.

I'm certain certain her story isn't finished. I think I heard word of a comic about her being in the future. In any case she can still be a bad guy. She's a force-wielding bounty hunter. That should scare your players.

Sadly, there aren't too many Nemesis characters that are worthy that croaked within the short time of the Battle of Yavin or didn't get a continuation. As many others have said, there's a good list of characters that appear in comics and The Clone Wars series that weren't killed off but have uncertain futures due to the series stopping.

That said, there is one fun thing I loved to do to my players: I take a character that I really like as a nemesis but didn't survive very far (let's say Grand Moff Tarkin), add a few quirks (make him a captain of an aging ship on the fringe with really bad luck) and new edges (a squick of Force Sensitivity; not enough for trouble, but enough to be noticed and secretly supported by the Inquisitorius) and set him loose upon the party.

My favorite one so far was take the reputation of Boba Fett, pull a page from Jodo Kast (relying on the armor for Fett's reputation), and pull a page from Los Vagos from 7th Sea (think V for Vendetta; everyone in the group dons the mast of El Vago and does what is fitting for the order, but he can appear anywhere at any time). I now had a Bounty Hunter with Dark Side capabilities that the party could NEVER be certain if they've defeated or not. After two years of weekly games, he was STILL standing because they either ran from him or, after killing three of them easily, thought they finally did him in, everyone else was an imposter, and/or he was all bluster.

Just my two cents there.

there are another good nemeses from the series: Cody and Rex, the Clone Trooper Commanders, Colonel Meebur Gascon, Moralo Eval, ... just look through the recurring cast.

I did something like that in a d6 game. The hotshot force-sensitive pilot got into a Swoop race while the 'captain' of the group used her military background to get close to an Imperial General in charge of the local garrison. (betting on the race) As the race was about to begin, the General announced a rare honor, that Lord Vader himself would be spectating in the viewer box with him. Our captain was also invited to view the race with the General and His Lordship.

The hotshot was sweating, still doing well in the race, but without using the Force, he didn't do as well as he could have. After a while, the PC captain noticed a few things "off" about Vader, and soon realized that it was an impostor. The General had a henchman dress up as Vader and appear with him to impress the locals and boost his reputation.

One of my favorite moments in gaming was the expression on the pilot player's face when the captain excused herself from the box and clicked on the comm to say "It's not really Vader."

And I still use this story when players complain about "bad situations" I put them in. "Remember how much is sucked when you couldn't use the Force to win the swoop race? And remember how it felt when that restriction disappeared?"

YOINK! :-D

Only problem with some of the Clones: many were old and/or dead by the time the Rebellion Era rolled around. I mean, the Clone Wars went on for a few years, and it was another. . .30 years, was it, until the Rebellion Era swung on in high gear?

While they can be powerful in some ways, these are career soldiers, grunts more often than not, who are not up for the same degree of work they used to be. That's not to say they can't be an annoying, recurring villain that appears from time to time, but they may have to be more behind the scenes rather than upfront.

True, clones age twice as fast as normal humans.

But we do see in the series several bounty hunters, criminals, military officers, politicians and such that can still be around at 0 ABY. Some like Aurra Sing have already be mentioned.

I really like Mass Amedda as a multi story shadow nemessis, wth Aura enforcing Obligation headaches...

Very nice , lots of good ideas here.

On the other hand, one only has to look at recent action movies features stars in their 50s and 60s like Willis, Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Liam Neeson...

I can totally see Rex or Cody ending up an action character like that, whether on the side of the Empire or against it.

And its implied (although never stated outright) that a method is developed to end the accelerated aging sometime between Episode III and IV. If you're a fan of Karen Traviss, the Republic/Imperial Commando series was leading up to it, and her New Jedi Order work assumed it had been. If not, (I know some people aren't) Grand Admiral Thrawn's use of year-old Spaarti clones during his campaigns means its likely, as otherwise those clones would only have had a year or two service before they would have to be replaced.

I had Darth Mauls spectre haunting a derelict Star Destroyer (with rahsghoul stormtroopers) for a module (long story on how this came to be), he would appear out of the shadows and slice his light saber on a unsuspecting PC and then disappear, or appear from down the long dark destroyer corridor. Maul's spectre couldnt do damage but it was used as a tool for Fear checks. I didnt tell the players he was Darth Maul, just said a hooded black cloaked figure with yellow eyes Suddenly appears from behind you striking down on you with his glowing red saber weapon etc...

That is the farthest i will go with using a canon character...
