What is Boba Fett's armor?

By Farseerixirvost, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I see a lot of images of people in "partial armor." Most notably Boba Fett. Variable pieces like helmet, breastplate, elbow/knee pads, wrist/shin guards. But not a full suit a la heavy battle or laminate armor.

Based on descriptions of armor in EotE rulebook (p 169-170) and the associated images, it kind of looks like the picture of padded armor, but doesn't fit that type's description.

So what exactly is partial armor like that? I thought I could make it up, "somewhere between padded and laminate", but those two have similar DEF and Soak values, so there is no value between those.

THANKS in advance for any help!

I'd say it's Battle Armor.

The illustrations aren't the only possible depictions for each armor type. For instance, padded armor might be the full body riot gear pictured, or it might be as simple as a vest and a helmet. We've had Heavy Clothing reskinned as trench coats, coveralls, flight vests, you name it.

I'd say mostly it's cool, because it is better to look good than to be good.....

His armor would most likely be some version of Superior grade armored clothing. If you actually look at it it is nothing more than a utility jumpsuit with armor plates attached. Hardly what I would call Heavy Battle Armor.

I'm away from book but doesn't heavy battle armor mention Mandos?

Look! It's sting looking for his last name in the dip!

It's a heavy battle armor. If built with Beskar or Mandalorian Iron, the armor is tough enough to resist lightsabers.

I really love the Mando's armor. It looks cool, it's tough and you it turns you into a badass.

Heavy Battle Armor

Cortosis weave

Vacuum Sealed

Optics Suit

+1 hard point if you tinker it

My version of Mandalorian armor.

Mandalorian Armour

Defence: 1

Soak: 3

Price: ® 25,000

Encumberance: 6

Hard Points: 4

Rarity: 9

Qualities: Cortosis, Superior.

Built-In Equipment: Brass Knuckles, Comm-Link (Handheld), Scanner Goggles, Load-Bearing Harness.

If you do not have the AoR beta, the load-bearing harness increases the encumberance threshold of the wearer by 3. If you are just using EotE then build in the backpack. You can also make it Mandalorian Armour without beskar by dropping the Cortosis quality and the price.

In two words, "House Ruled"

It's got a built in flame thrower...

I've seen people mention that Bobba's armor is actually a light armor. So Armored Clothing would be appropriate. Jango's armor is supposed to be heavier, so I'd say that it is a better representation of heavy battle armor.

Tinkered armored clothing would have two hardpoints. That should be enough to model a Bobba character. Just because he has a jetpack doesn't mean that it's built into the armor. And you don't have to have the flame thrower built in too. It's a seperate wrist peice that takes a maneuver to ready (i.e. draw the weapon) and can be "stowed" for free. Same with the grappling line.

Yoda: "Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned." Let the narrative flow through you. Embrace it and it will guide you. :P

Additionally, in the free traders & freebooters fan product there is a light battle armor that is 1 defense, 1 soak, and has two hardpoints if someone insists that it has to be a battle armor because it's mandalorian.

I completely agree. I've never understood the thinking that Boba's armor was some sort of super heavy armor as if the pictures of it were ignored for some Mando concept later preferred.

Superior Armored Clothing with lots of attachments.

If you love your heavy Mandos and EU, then what some of them are wearing are the heavier, Battle Armor, version made by the Mandolorians. Boba and Jango were wearing a lighter version.

Great replies. Lots of great ideas.

But using Boba as my example may have led us astray a tad. I'm more asking about "partial armor" and how to play that. Someone with a breastplate, shoulder pads, and shin guards (for example), but not a "full" suit of battle/laminate armor.

That sounds like the description of armored clothing to a T. Heavy clothing with some extra plates to provide protection. What it looks like is totally up to you.

Heavy Battle Armor specifically says that it can be just a heavy vest and helmet.

Somewhere I read that neither Jango or Boba Fett's armour was constructed of Mandolorian steel. So probably no Cortosis weave.

Having seen the Boba Fett costume in person, it looks more like partial armour than a heavy battle armour to me. Heavy clothing, vambraces, greaves, breastplate, backpack, and helmet.

But, this is Star Wars, appearance matters not. Anything can have whatever game mechanical properties you want it to, no matter what it looks like. Personally I find a lot of the EU Mando stuff to read like excessive fanfic. But I find that with a lot of the EU novels, I haven't read any of the comics since Dark Empire, and haven't watched the Clone Wars series.

I'd say Boba Fett's armor is heavy battle armor. Armored clothing is supposed to look enough like clothing to be passable as clothing. Boba Fett's armor isn't fooling anyone.

A mechanics onese and pieces of painted plastic stiched to it.

Early on Boba Fett's armour was made of Durasteel. Later he had it upgraded to Mandalorian Iron. In game terms it has the Cortosis quality later.

Probably heavy armour, with a homebrew talent that allows him to use a weapon as part of his attachment for at least once a combat (Hence justifying the gadgets that are all over his person.)

I think being a famous bounty hunter would probably afford him that, though I would also be happy with it being considered superior armoured clothing, as with the gadgeteer tree he could very easily have respectable soak and very solid defences without suffering any encumberance from wearing it. By the time he finishes the main bulk of the tree, he has 3 additional soak and 2 defence dice to his name. Giving him heavy armour would only give him one additional point of soak, if I recall correctly.

Hence to me it would make more sense if he wore armoured clothing, but due to the extent of his customisation it actually has characteristics more in line with heavy armour without slowing him down. Rolling 4 dice in defence (baring no other defensive abilities) would also give him very solid protection vs lightsabers also, though that is largely because I don't know where the machanical properties of Chreosis is.

If he uses Jury Rigged on Heavy Battle Armor, it won't have any Encumbrance while he wears it either.

It's modified padded battle armor in d20 Star Wars Revised, so maybe padded armor?

Saga Edition had it listed as modified battle armor, so I'm thinking that heavy battle armor is probably more on target.

in the end, it's something that probably won't be settled until FFG decides to include stats for Boba Fett, possibly as part of an adventure or some type of "who's who of the galaxy?" sourcebook.

people like to speculate so thats why i give the mechanics jumpsuit and plastic plates idea just to let everyone know this is a game and just enjoy what we get.

Ahhh I forgot about Jury Rigged, yet it is a importent part of gadgeteer. Though makes sense, that the battle armour could be lightened, to have the best quailities of the armour system in a lighter package.
