First tournament last night

By Audio Weasel, in X-Wing

and apparently I suck lol. My only win was a bye.

In all seriousness, I ran a list I hadn't played before. I do think it's a good list, I just need to fly it correctly. I did drop a proton bomb in the middle of a swarm of ties, though, and that makes it a good night.

I'm sorry you didn't do so well. What was your list?

Sorry you had a bad experience.

Let the record show that you should know your fleet well before tourneying.

Hang in there, man!

I haven't been in any tournies yet, but I have a feeling that I'll get owned pretty badly when I do. And considering how much I love this game, I have a feeling it will bum me out pretty badly.

So I am saying this to encourage you. Cause I will probably need it when I get stomped!

Don't get too discouraged!

First tournament.

Learn from whatcha did wrong, figure out whatcha did right, and keep flying!

Oh no, it wasn't a bad experience at all. Everybody was great, had a good time, got a movie art Black Squadron card for participating, just lost a lot lol.

List was: Boba Fett + Navigator + Proton Bomb + Engine Upgrade + Expert Handling

Krassis + HLC + Seismic Charge + Saboteur

Basically, Fett in close and Krassis sniping. I know one thing I did wrong was being to timid with Krassis' movement. In trying to keep him at longer range, I ended up not being close enough for a shot a couple of times when I should have. Also forgot to take his reroll a couple of times, meant to dump the seismic charge on a turn and forgot to, you know, basic mistakes.

I tend more toward more maneuverable craft generally, but I do like this list. I just need more time with it, and maybe to tinker with it some. I found I didn't actually use the Fettigator's abilities that much, but I like the high PS.

There's a pirate tourney on saturday, and some of the same people are going to be there, and I will too.

It gets better pretty quickly. Before you know it you'll be the vet watching the other newbs making the mistakes. At least you didn't fly anyone off the mat like I did the 1st time I ran large ships in a tourney. I was so embarrassed! Btw, nice meeting you last night. Had a good time.

  • AW, dont be discouraged - u r no doubt on a learning curve and with practice u will get better results i am sure. stick at it.
  • i have found having a mix of ships helps as u have more options.
  • i have tried combining the firespray and lambda shuttle into the same squad and this worked pretty well.
  • have u considered dropping a firespray and adding some smaller fighters?
  • imo HLC is like 'fools gold' in some games its amazing and in others it doesnt earn its points :(

how about something like...

Kath Scarlet + expert handling (40)

Bounty Hunter + recon specialist (36)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

or

Bobba Fett+ expert handling+navigator (44)

Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics (20)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

[edit] those academy pilots will likely get ignored early game as u have better targets they want to take down which lets them chip away and be surprisingly effective in my experience :)

Thanks Malus, was nice meeting you too, and I'll see you saturday.

Bomber, I am by no means getting discouraged, I just need more time to play. Work is hopefully going to slow down for me soon (looks like we're finally getting another engineer in my office) and I'll have more chances to play.

I'm kinda afaid of the same thing happening to me. I am looking to start playing at game stores because all i have done so far is play people with my own set (Winning almost everyone time). But GL in your next tournie and i hope i get some my first :)

The good news is, the game is still new enough that you will likely run into opponents who are in the same boat. Also, the game is random enough with dice, that as long as you don't make a major mistake, you can still pull off some victories without doing anything particularly fantastic.

I made the jump from just playing with my wife to playing in game stores, and I felt that there were some opponents who played even less than me! A weird experience!

Hey thanks for the advice, hopefully all will go as planed and my 3 ships rebel squad will destroy them all  Muhahaha!

Second tourney yesterday, pirate style. Flew the following:

Green Squadron with Veteran Instincts and Stealth Device

Saber Squadron with Veteran Instincts and Stealth Device

Blue Squadron with Fire Control Systems

TIE Bomber with Assault Missiles and Proton Bombs

I had one loss, one draw, one modified win, and one full win (we both still had ships on the table but the point difference was more than 33)

Had a great time, and Proton Bombs are currently my favorite thing ever

... !

No faction restrictions?!

How did I not think of this before?!

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-D2 (4)
Shield Upgrade (4)

Captain Kagi (27)
Fire-Control System (2)
Gunner (5)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Carnor Jax (26)
Push the Limit (3)

So, they have to shoot at Biggs, but they have to Target Lock Kagi, and Carnor shuts down their ability to use focus or evade tokens. Biggs is hardened and Kagi can lay down huge levels of damage.

That...... is bloody well brilliant

Well... You win some you lose most when you're starting out. You also chose a very hard to fly list for your first tourny... If you stick with it you'll get much better much faster. And, it sounds like you already analyzed your play and learned from your mistakes. Keep flying!

And Sable, that is diabolical.

Got cooked a lot my first few tournaments, just made it that much better when I finally won one. To co-opt a golf saying... "a bad day playing x-wing is still better than a good day at the office"

I thought that pirate tourneys don't usually allow named pilots?

They don't. Pirate rules are as follows...

No faction restriction

No unique pilots or upgrades

limit of 1 of each different ship type (sometimes different metas allow 2 TIE-LN but not always)

You're right and this one didn't either. Too bad because that would be one hell of a list.

Glad to hear that you've entered and enjoyed your first couple tournaments and good to see the improvement between them. At that rate, you'll be tourney winner soon. :>)

And how did your wife do?

And how did your wife do?

She didn't go. She doesn't feel ready to try something like that, yet. I tried to get her to come along, but no good. She'll probably start coming out for tourneys after store championships.
