Yodas

By Hakon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

hopefully now that disney owns star wars we can finally get passed the ego behind star wars and be given a name and place of origin for Yoda's species (from here on called YS)

I want to play a YS, i want to encounter npc YS's and i don't feel that it should be kept a secret from us the fans.

if they want to make it that nobody knows anything about it in the star wars universe, fine, but they still need a reference for us.

they can make knowledge about YS in the galaxy akin to knowledge of how to speak druidic in d&d (you aren't a druid you can't learn it)... you aren't a YS you don't know about it, you are a YS you don't talk about it, being a YS will be like being in fight club.

so please FFG on behalf of your customers, put pressure on disney to invent a name and backstory for this iconic species.

This thread should be titled "A Word to the Ys".

FFG pressure Disney? That's hilarious.

Maybe they fight dirty.

Only place I know Yoda's peeps crop up are KotOR and a couple of issues of Star Wars Tales.

Some stuff here.

I understand why people want to know about Yoda's species. As a fan, I personally kind of like it as a mystery. They're clearly very rare since only one other member has appeared in the films besides Yoda himself, and I'm sure that can play into why nobody really knows about them in-universe.

maybe only 2 can exist at any one time, 1 male and 1 female, and when 1 dies an egg on their homeworld hatches and a new one takes its place.....

or maybe they are as common as ewoks.... you just need to know where to look

Out there? Pass them trees?

if we look at the movie ET, ET recognises a kid dressed as yoda, and in star wars episode 3 we see a collection of aliens in the senate who look like ET.

therefor we know 2 very important facts.

1 ET comes from the star wars galaxy

2 since ET is set in the modern day and star wars is a long time ago, it means yodas species are not going extinct, and there are enough during the empire days to keep the population going until now.

Wow... inference galore.

And since ET can fly, the Force is in our world too. Yeah, that Yoda and ET reference is a great internet meme. I for one don't want to know more about Yoda. Leave the mystery!! Not everything has to have a backstory. I feel the EU really ruined Boba Fett and the Mandlaorians, amung other things...

Anyway Hakon, if you want to play a Ys, then play one, or make them NPCs if you want. You don't have to have official stats or info. I remember back In the ancient days of WEG, I only had the rule book and the Sourcebook for the longest time. Not a lot of information in those two, but man, those were awesome times!! We didn't even have a name for the galactic capital other than Imperial Center.

So have fun with your Ys!!!

I still cling to the belief that Yoda's species are the Whill. Back when Lucas first started with Star Wars, there was a reference that the story was taken from something called "The Journal of the Whills." Lucas has never made a race called the Whill appear in any movie, sourcebook or EU inference. Since he'd originally included it, and his predilection for adding wonky aliens to everything, I've always assumed they were in there but we don't know where. As he's been quite coy with Yoda race, his silence is pretty close to affirmation in my book.

i don't feel that it should be kept a secret from us the fans.

Oh, please...

Yoda species: muppet

It's only logical and it ffits.in all honesty why over 30 years still no official name or a eu placeholder.

I'd have called them chazzwazzers.

Actually, we use that as a derogatory reference by humans for non-human species in game.

Genius. I like it.

i kinda wish he was the only one, actually (or, specifically, the only we know of)

Putting Yaddle into ep 1 was wierd.

I use that as a derogatory term for almost everyone and everything.

Only two Yoda's, as opposed to the 'Rule of Two'... hmm... What if there were a Dark Side YS, like a Yoda Sith Lord, called Soda... And instead of shooting lightning from his hands, he shoot out carbonated force bubbles, fill their lungs and kill them from asphyxiation (rather than force choke)... Devious...

Nope. Whatever the Whills are they are, it's been confirmed they are not Yoda's species. They may not even be a species at all, since they are referred to as the Ancient Order of the Whills. The Whills are about a big of a mystery as Yoda's species so it's appealing to want to conflate the two.

One word: Midichlorians.

There is perhaps nothing that has caused more damage to the Star Wars mythos than the demystification of things that should have stayed mysterious.

I really really don't want to know. The mystery makes Yoda, well, Yoda.

I never considered it that much of a relevant mystery, so I never thought much about it - certainly not as much as the ridiculous midichlorian-thing. If there was an actual mystery, you'd have to, at some point, mystify it, by hinting at this or that.

Right now it seems odd that it's just an irrelevant blank, a void in the fluff.

Maybe I'm wrong, and I've just missed some expanded universe stuff. I don't care overly much about this, so for me, it can go either way. On one level, I wouldn't mind knowing more, and I don't think the "mystery" of Yoda's species is very relevant. On another level, there's the off chance that it would be executed poorly, and just mess things up, along with making those that feel that it is a relevant mystery disappointed.

I don't really care about the mystery. It's one that I don't really care knowing about, largely because they seem so curiously inferior as a species as they are small and not well known, yet there has always been one on the council for the last 900 years.

There just isn't a mystery to discuss, as it will either end up a mary sue race of awesomeness, or as disappointing as we imagine (hence why they are not really recongised, just Yoda is.)

I really don't want to see like 4 billion yodas running around some planet. He is cool because he is short, green and lonely.
