Land based game

By saiharris, in X-Wing

AGES and AGES ago I recall hearing about this game being such a hit that FFG were trying to come up with a concept for a land based miniature game to run alongside it.

hell, the idea that you could have land battles, space battles and even use a mix of the two seemed a possibility from what I was reading.

For the life of me, I cant find any updates to this or anything.

Is there anything else other than heresay now? I nearly feel like Im wishlisting here!

A Hoth or Endor setting would be nice but I think that would make more of a separate game. There would have to be tons of adjustments to the core rules to accommodate land based combat.

Example: Passing/shooting through friendlies/enemies could no longer use the 3D space rules. So a new way of determining line of sight would probably be needed. This may even need different rules for a land based AT-AT unit and an T-47 up in the air.

I would love a ground based game - but it should be a new game not called X-wing in my opinion.

I expect you just have to do a project like this for your own enjoyment, as a house ruled version of the base game.

I would love to live in a world with Xwing, a capital ship fleet battle scale version, and a land based walkers vs speeders etc version. 3 seperate games with the rules tailored to each but a similar feel in style overall.

My problem with a land based Star Wars game set during the rebellion is one of balance. The rebels lost the battle of Hoth horribly (really only Luke accomplished any significant kills). Endor was more of a skirmish then a battle and even then it was won by the Ewoks and not the rebels. The rebellion possesses no vehicles that can match the Empire except for their starfighters.

I would have a blast moving my AT-ATs and AT-STs across the battlefield and wiping out the rebellion but I can't imagine it would be as fun for the rebel player

reminds me of that old boardgame of star wars , the queens gambit, it also lets you play 3 diffrent points of view at once

would be awesome tho to see it in tabletop 2 zones of 3x3 so 6x3 ... one half space battle and one half ground battle of the planet where the xwing battle is happing above

or ground battle and then midair battle with the xwing ect would be sooo awesome for campaign modes ! gogo FFG make it happen and we throw our money at you like monkeys throwing ...... you know what i mean :P

we dont need to follow the movies ect for it tbh, we can develop our own versions of it, just the scenery ect of the movies with our own version of the battle would make it so awesome, WTB A SNOWSPEEDER NOAW ! :P , soo many possebolities for factions ect ! ..

BRB changing underware....

I would love a land ADDITION to X-Wing. Maybe a future expansion? Kind of like the "seafarers" expansion for "Settlers of Catan?"

The schematics would have to be pretty well thought out, but I think it could work.

I imagine it like an assault; rebel land units defending a base, while imperial space units attack. My wife painted an asteroid and a few building like this for one game we played. Turned out really fun.

With the right amount of balancing between firepower and maneuverability, maybe more of a mission based game, it would work.

Reminds me of game I used to spend hours and hours playing...

You guys seem to be talking about a game similar to the old WotC Star Wars Miniatures which was a skirmish game using characters as well as land based ships (speeders, AT-ATs, AT-STs, etc). I would love for FFG to make a game like this.

There was a lot of speculation going around as soon as FFG got the license that they would replace the WotC game. Especially from the people who were (and still do) play it. If FFG can give us figures similar in quality to what they are doing with X-wing, I would be all for it.

However, I wouldn't want to it to be an "add-on" to X-wing. They should be two totally different games. If not, it will end up like WizKids Star Wars PocketModels. It was a very fun game, until they added a land based component in the second expansion totally destroying the game.

TomasB, The reason the Rebs lost so badly at Hoth is because they didn't have any armor assests such as Tanks to deal with the AT-AT's. even their snow speeder(T-47) weapons were useless. And they didn't use any X-wings, or Y-wings for ground support. And as you saw in a scene from ESB where they use a large energy based artillery piece on an AT-AT's foot, which did nothing to the walker. You can't hold a ridgeline with limited numbers of Infantry, armed with small arms and expect to win the battle.

Moore1980, that was my point. The Rebels don't posses any armour to speak of. The Rebels rely on guerilla warfare. They do not have the resources to stand toe-to-toe with the Imperials in a set piece land battle.

Another thing to worry about with this is an AT-AT is huge in comparison to anything else seen in the movies for land based assault. AT-ST is quite a bit smaller and speeder bikes would be tiny. Not to mention movement would be difficult because a speeder bike is way faster and would have much more range than an AT-AT, so much so that I think that they would need different movement templates. Still it would be pretty cool.
