Painting question - Firespray

By LukesFather, in X-Wing

alright, I have been doing some paint on my ships. I was to be able to look at the table and know where my ships are. I have posted results of what I have done (bwings, an outer rim)

My question with the firespray: paint panels or go for the pattern of like a urban camo (greys, black, and white) with a hex? the ship is going to be the darker colors, but how would I do the hex, and would it be easier to do just panels?

looking for ideas and thoughts, thanks.

If you have access to an airbrush, you could look at using digital camo stencils on it. They are a bit fiddly on the curves but it can be done and isn't so bad if you're only doing it for one model.

Example on a larger model: (not mine)

Not sure how Star Wars ships would look with that modern sci fi trope the hex pattern but here is a wonderful writeup on how to do it.

Incredible airbrushed figure bust with various hex patterns sprayed on via hundreds of cut masking tape hexs

Wow, that is incredible hex patterning.. sounds like he cut all those hex tape pieces himself.. dedicated to say the least.

I am working on a Kath Scarlet repaint, and will be doing a panel style paint job as her ship paint works out that way. Had I the patience, I would do a hex patern on another one. Might still if I can get an adhesive tape or pattern for it.

Doing Scarlets ship seems easy, but I am using a couple views I found on line and am trying to give it the best pattern for my vision.. and trying to do it when I can see well enough also. Vision issues really slow me down, due depth perception loss.. really makes painting hard.. lol

Edit: wow.. been looking further.. didn't realize he sculpted that entire suit of armor.. very impressive..

I don't have an airbrush....yet, maybe in the future.

Looking at the model, I could do just the red areas and the rest would be the colors I'm looking for, or at least close enough.

hex would look sweet, but they would be tiny I think.

I have an air brush, just haven't used one in years. I think if I can get a stencil, or a good pattern to make the hexes I think maybe 1/8th inch would look fantastic on a firespray.

You really don't need an airbrush. Just drybrush the color on the model over the masking tape until you get suitable coverage.

that's what I do now, I think if I did a broader camo color I might actually bust it out.. if I could get a large stencil to stick to it I might also, just because it's a lighter coating of paint.. or thinner if you prefer.. all the repaints I have posted so far on here have all been brush painted.

I am now wondering if doing like a stamp would work out?

I guess I could make a stencil set, then copy that to tape, th put that on.....

Post the file if you do.. lol.. I'm looking at that guys figure and seeing that he just cut the tape and then stuck it to the model, but I'll need to measure and mark.. cut.. cut some more.. lol... imused to have some tape that had a reflective side.. if you did it right, the reflective part came off in small hexes like that.. double sided tape would be a perfect combo with it.

That hex pattern is awesome, and the diamond part for the body suit.. too cool.. I have done stuff like that in the past, but hadn't thought to donit for one of these models.. could be cool.. pick out different panels and give them a treatment.. could be really cool..

here is what I ended up doing
