Incremental Obligation for credits?

By progressions, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

When building characters, do you allow players to take "4 points of Obligation" instead of 5 or 10?

In our character building sessions, I accidentally gave the characters 1000c of gear rather than 500c.

One of the players said his character bought 900c worth of gear, so he would take 4 points of Obligation.

I'm inclined to just go with it, but I know that the Obligation-for-credits exchange isn't direct (5 points for 1000c, 10 points for 2,500 credits) so I wasn't sure.

Nope, mostly for my own sake of how much a given set of Obligation is worth. When it's gained in game, it usually isn't for as tangible a benefit as a specific amount of creds/XP and is more based on story consequences.

I'd make him take 5 and either let him start with 100 more credits or tell him he forfeits that 100c if he doesn't spend it. Easy.

You can structure that however you want. No one ultimately will know or care. if it makes the player happy and your happy, then go for it!

I asked the player, he just misunderstood the 'exchange rate'. We just went ahead with 5 Obligation for 1000 credits as per RAW.

Thanks!
