Your thoughts on future editions of X-Wing? (A follow up topic)

By SentinelJP, in X-Wing

This is kind of a follow up to my previous topic "What does the future hold for your collection?" I was going to include this in that original post, but I thought this might warrant it's own discussion.

Something I'm a little nervous about is future editions. So often, games get a 2nd/3rd/4th edition or a revised edition which renders the original either redundant or simply less desirable to play.

Personally I don't know if this would be much of an issue with X-Wing as the game itself seems pretty polished and the ship models would be hard to beat, unless they started adding lighting or some such to them, but I'd hate to think there may come a day when I feel the need to replace what I have or set it aside.

Or maybe there won't ever be another edition and they'll just continue to expand on the existing game? Any thoughts? Feelings? Criticisms? Amusing slights against my lineage?

They are just going to keep riding this cash-cow until the next Death Star is finished. Just imagine:

  • Special collectors edition
  • Collectable storage tins
  • Jewel-encrusted models (cubic zirconium only, they aren't that nuts, although we might be)
  • Radio controlled bases

The mind boggles at the endless possibilities.

I would think the most likely edition would be one for capital ship combat, scaled down even further to allow some of the really big ships to come into play.

But, really, I quite like first edition and I don't feel FFG is done with it yet. As deliberate as they are at putting out new pieces, this edition could be ongoing for many years.

I think scenario books. Maybe some sourcebooks...who knows. Either way we are getting great miniatures and that is good.

Radio-controlled bases might actually be pretty cool. They already have modular robots that can sense each other, so you can easily computerize and roboticize the game.

Now all we need to do is get them to do laser-fire and explosion effects irl...

A prequel trilogy/clone wars and/or sequel trilogy spinoff game seems inevitable. At a minimum I hope the rules and general gameplay are the same to allow for casual crossover games. Even better would be if they are just expansions so you could have 6 factions to choose from for tournaments...Rebel, Imperial, Republic, Confederacy, and the new good and bad factions from the sequels.

No new edition will ever be needed if they just go this route. It makes too much sneeze not to add clone wars. Makes more sense when you consider 3 years of clone wars ships would allow perfect timing to get the sequel movies out for even more ships! Add 1 more year of "basic" or "original" "edition" before that and I think you have a winner as long as they are all compatible.

Too... many... jokes. Must... mock... clone wars.... Agh!

You're right, I think that would be the best way forward. If it 'ain't broke, don't fix it. Just add more goodies for us collectors. I'm not a big fan of the prequels, but that's not to say they didn't have some nice ship designs. They'd look great on the table.

If they had a specialized metal board that has a magnitised motor movers like the old hockey games where the pieces would move themselves with metal attachments for present bases. It would be hella difficult to make but would be so ******* awsome.

It's possible that they might release a "second edition" but it would probably just entail some of the minor fixes (Tie advanced for example) in a format where you can buy the second edition cards to update your fleet. Yes it would mean throwing money at them for purely rules, but I doubt I'd care that much.

Otherwise they will develop the game via things like the Imperial Aces pack where you get a few new tricks and some nicely points costed interceptors in the form of the Royal Guard pilots.

Anyone?

Also... I'm totally down with more stuff. 2nd Edition, Clone Wars/New Republic/Old Republic/(InsertRandomStarWarsEraHere) Expansion, lets do it.

I like toys. ^^

Personally,

I can see more tie fighters coming as they have a slew of them to choose from to add. Same with Rebels. We will get all that before they add Clone Wars factions. Also, larger ships will come with different formats to add. The could also, just sell cards to update the current ships you have. Really, this game has endless possibilities. That is the amazing part of it.

The only thing holding it back is how fast FFG can get ships out for us to give them our money. I would love to see new waves quarterly.

I'd probably be happier with bi annual releases. Games Workshop have actually turned off many of their players due to their sudden shift to a rapid release schedule (plus their blatant cash grabs). They are releasing so many books that tournament players struggle to keep up with the amount of books required to keep up to date on all of the factions. I doubt this would occur for X-Wing but it is nicer if you can build up your fleet in little purchases and complete getting what you want to get (generally four of everything for most of us) before the next wave hits.

I'm a GW convert. I've owned this game a week. A friend of mine suggested it to me as I have 3 kids ages 7, 8, and 13. The little two struggle with the complex rules of the other systems. This was intuitive, fast, and fun for them as well as me! My only concern going into the game was that there are only the two factions. Those fears were unfounded as you all know. When FFG expands to the other races from the prequels I'll be VERY happy.

After all its Star Wars… with all the alien races they could even just start making up stuff! I'd like to see the existing ships from the movies flushed out first before they decided to make a new previously unseen fleet.

I think I'm in agreement with everyone here when I say that more factions added to this game would be marvellous. I'm still rooting for Black Sun/Pirates so we can have three player games in -this- timeline, but I'll be happy if and when there are Clone Wars or episode VII stuff.

I am new to X-Wing, but not new to SW fandom going back to the PC games, TIE Fighter (first), then X-Wing (second). Since then, the most exciting part of Star Wars for me was KOTOR. I'm very hungry for either a KOTOR or Old Republic starter and waves for X-Wing. There are now a good selection of ships from this era in the fiction and EA/Lucasarts (sic) are still putting dollars into the MMO. Is there anyone else out there dying to fly the Ebon Hawk against a swarm of Malak's Star Forge produced Sith Fighters? Also, having a "light side/dark side" pilot with different skills would be awesome.
