What does the future hold for your X-Wing collection?

By SentinelJP, in X-Wing

By this I mean, what do you plan to do with your collection in the future? This game represents a considerable investment to a lot of people. I myself have spent a good deal of time and money collecting, sorting (and admiring) what I have with the intention of being able to dig out the game one day in the far future and think "oh yeah, I remember this. This game was awesome! I gotta play it again." I also plan to pass it on to my kids eventually, by then it might be considered a classic or a collector's item.

Anyway, just random thoughts. What does the future of X-Wing hold for you?

I'm sure it will end up next to my 40K and Mechwarrior armies(big box in the garage) in the coming years. I have a terrible habit of playing a game for a year or two, then moving on. It's not particularly sentimental or anything to me, just something to have some fun with.

If I ever find the time a stop-motion Star Wars Movie of a space battle. Or recreation of a space battle from one of the movies...

I'd like to add more tie fighters...I have 3 but I would like 6-8 maybe..just for fun!

For me, I'm going to keep it around for posterity. I'm thinking tabletop gaming will never truly disappear, because there's something inherently honest about it. Video games, no matter how good they are, aren't always completely honest. The computer can cheat. Racing games sometimes have cars that are behind you suddenly zoom out in front of you. FPS games can modify your hit percentages to make the mooks harder to kill. RPGs have a fixed number of paths to follow.

Tabletop games have none of that. Well, if the players and game masters (if the game has one) are honest. And you can tell when they aren't being honest mush easier than with a computer.

Miniatures games have the added benefit that the minis are fun to play with on their own and fun to collect, especially if they're centered around a beloved subject like Star Wars.

X-wing Miniatures Game has one of the most fun systems you'll ever play, and it has well-crafted minis that are faithful to their on-screen counterparts. I predict that it will last for a long time.

To that end, I'm going to keep my game pieces around for as long as I can, adding as much as I can whenever I can.

Agreed Millennium Falsehood! This game is truly wonderful to play as well as look at and admire! I've loved Star Wars my whole life and some of my favorite moments in the films are the ship battles. That said, I love these minis and never plan on discarding or even storing them, I'll probably end up displaying them somehow!

I started playing Warhammer 40k way back in its second edition about 18 years ago. As long as I can find the opponents, I hope to be playing this game just as long.

These are my feelings as well.

I've been a Star Wars fan since forever. The best part of X-Wing is that I have an excuse to play with some toys... in the form of a board game. I've helped with the rules of a few little board games with friends, and I am working on a decent RPG version of X-Wing, so there is really no shortage of scenarios for this one.

The other great thing... is my primary opponent is my wife. I like playing with other people, and hope to join a decent community soon. But before and after that happens, I'll always have a lifelong opponent. ^_^

I have 4 Imp Aces packs already prepaid for at my FLGS, and will be unboxed the moment they arrive. I'm most likely looking at 2 each of the large ships when they arrive, maybe a third transport depending if I want more copies of the upgrades within and the Tantives don't have the same ones. This is my game. I'm lucky if I make the time to play MtG or Halo 4 once a week these days. I'm so deep into this game the only way to justify it is to go deeper :P I'm lucky to get three games in each month, but I check the forums every day, I am constantly creating/borrowing/stealing/tweaking squad lists. 21 pages each of rebel and imperial lists that need to be flown. I will play this game until I die, even if I have to brainwash my nieces and nephews when they get old enough :P

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

Comparing miniature games to video games is like comparing real sex and cybersex. We don't need to go further that that. You cannot replace the human element in either case.

Collection wise, another X-Wing and 2 TIE Fighters, plus another copy of the starter set.

As for playing. It'll depend on the crowd after I move back to Florida. I know some folks that were interested but haven't gotten into it cause they want other players. Since I have both Imperial and Rebel sides, I can jump start that a bit. I figure through this year it'll be played often, and then in the coming two years it'll all depend. on those around me.

I'm pretty sure mine will keep growing, and growing...

My friend is a fan too, so as long as we hang out I think we'll keep playing this game for years. We also discgolf, which is my other major passion for rec time. So little to no X-Wing during the off season, I think that will keep the game fresh for us for a long time.

Even if I stop, I'll have them displayed on a shelf in my office.

my overall goal is to have at least one or two of each ship to give to each of my boys. While we play a modified game now I hope they stick with it and continue the fun.

well i hope it doesn't have the same fate as my old star fleet battles ships... They just disappeared over time.. the game was overly complex, and the ships were not all that detailed...

Well assuming FFG can keep the game going for another 18 months or so, they could start adding ships and such from the new movies, and with what a movie a year coming out. That should keep interest pretty high for some time.

I hooked my nephew on Star Wars very early on. Now he's old enough to play this game with me and I've been helping build his fleet. I've even started taking him along to tournaments at our local game stores!

Actually SFB has evolved since you played, with newer models that are more detailed, as well as streamlined rules of play (though I really enjoyed the old style rules where you could do pretty much anything in your ship, even non-combat missions).

I didn't give it any thought until now. I quit playing a week ago to give myself a break, then I'll go back to playing once I can assemble my Rogue Squadron list. All that's missing is Wes Janson, and he'll come out with the transport. WHICH NEEDS TO HURRY :P (Oh, and Tycho in an X-wing is missing too, but having Ibtisam in a B-wing kinda makes the whole 'Rogue Squadron going back to an all-X-wing unit' thing moot. So he's in an A-wing for now.)

In the late 80's I started collecting minis, and a soon as I did that I wanted the game X-wing. I bought Star Warriors when it came out (it was a long time ago) it was a hex based Star Wars space combat game designed to be used with the original West End Games role playing game. I played it a lot, but it didn't have minis it had card board play tokens. I played an old space fighter combat game called Silent Death. Some of my best gaming memories are of playing that game. But even though it had minis I wished it was Star Wars.

Fast Forward a decade or two and Wizards bought the rights to the Star Wars Universe and we got Star Wars Star ship battles, finally I had a Star Wars game with models, but even though the game was fun, it was a terrible game and worst of all it was collectable. In the end I just stopped buying the boosters and just bought the ships I wanted on Ebay.

Then came a great day in my gaming life, possibly the greatest, I went to Gen Con for the early release of Star Wars X-wing. It was literally the game I had been waiting or all my life. It was a Star Wars space combat gam with really good models, it wasn't collectable, and not only did it have really good rules, but I think the rules system alone is among the best rules system for any table top mini game I have ever played.

Yes there may come a day when I don't play it as much. I like other gamers can be drawn away to new shinier games, but Star Wars is special to me. I have been waiting for this game my whole gaming life, and not only is it not a disappointment it was better than I could have hoped.

I have a son that is almost 2. It will be many years before he is old enough to play with me, but that day will come. I expect to spend many hours with him after his homework is done playing X-Wing.

Disc golf is awesome... Another place to "fly casual".
