Balance quality / difficulty level of the various campaigns

By Kaiju, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello everyone,

I am about to start up a campaign of Descent 2 with a group of 4 players, and it looks like I ll be the Overlord.

All of us have a little practice playing a few single-game quests, and my players are very experienced tactical players with a lot of boardgame and tabletop experience (as am I)

So far, unless we restrict the time on the hero turns, they only really lose by bad dice luck, but lets assume they will not make major tactical errors. So far, the games have often come down to a crucial turn of attacks deciding the outcome, which makes for interesting play, but given that it is already a fair fight at that level, and since heroes outscale the OL progression in campaigns by far, its safe to assume the Shadow Rune expansion is not going to work well.

I have, currently, access to the Trollfens and Lair of the Wyrm as well, plus could pick up the big box expansion tonight (money is not the issue for this, as long as we will be able to have many evenings of fun, the split cost for each is negligible), but I am really looking for a campaign to use that is better balanced than Shadow Rune.

Does anyone have experience playing the mini-campaigns as standalone?

IMO I found Labrinth of Ruin to be a lot more balanced, with the Overlord winning in close campaigns whenever we have played

We have never played with the Disciple or Runemaster though, which may have something more to do with the balance issues than the quests themselves.

Another option is to invest in a lieutenant pack, this really does add power to the OL and you can easily house rule/ handicap by adding threat tokens as needed or in different scenerios (we allow the OL to add a Threat token whenever he/she plays a rumour card be it adding a quest or not)

Why can't I find anyone willing to split the cost of games with me!

For that matter why is it so hard to find anyone willing to stick around and play a campaign...

All I've played are one off encounters.

My family and friends rather watch TV than play a game.

Anyway my recommendation is to go ahead and get the expansion because it's always cool to play something new. Then mix in all the OL cards into one deck, even the cards from the expansions your not playing, so that you have a lot more options. Of course you have to mix in the treasure cards but, so it isn't easy for the heroes to get too much stuff, don't use the secret rooms or rumors. And definitely get a Lieutenant or 2 just so you can use their cards as well.

I'm usually the Overlord but play more like a Dungeon Master trying to make sure everyone is having fun.
