Loosing my focus: or totally confused...

By straetski, in X-Wing

Dear Chaps,

A very silly question I know but if I give my X-wing a focus token for it's action is it conferred to all dice coming up with a focus image or just one?

The situation is like this: I usually pla y with 1 buddy. He's good at reading and translating rules and so we played a situation like this as follows.

An X-wing has a focus token: he gets 4 dice, results are 1 hit 2 focus 1 blank. We would then turn 1 of the focus results giving the X-wing 2 hits.

Now last Saturday I played a game with some friends I have never played X-wing against before and they played above situation as follows: both the focus results are boosted to hits giving the X-wing 3 hits...

Now what is the correct way?

Sorry if my explanation isn't formulated clear enough English is not my first language.

TIA Sander

Whenever you spend a focus token, all focus icons in the dice roll the token is being spent on are turned into their desired outcome (hits for attack, evades for defense)

the focus token changes ALL focus results into hits / evades

The Focus changes all the [eye] dice FOR THAT ROLL. This means the defense against one attack or turned the other way around only one attack. If Han Solo w/ Gunner fires at a ship you'd only get to use Focus ONCE despite having four possible rolls (initial attack, Han Reroll, Gunner attack and possible reroll) although something like Marksmanship will affect all of those attack rolls.

I think this is the single most commonly asked question in X-Wing. I know I did it wrong at first, and I've seen this question asked perhaps 250 times over the nearly year I've been playing.

Makes me think they need to errata the rules to make this more clear.

Well gents thanks for all your help: amazingly this makes playing the game so much more fun and the focus action, by far the best option available.

Talking about stupid mistakes: when I made my 200 points list, for the game last Saturday, I was so happy to be able to include both the Firespray and the Shuttle in one list with sufficient other fighters that I totally forgot that upgrades are not included in the points cost but are paid for separately... urgh...the Slave is useless like that. I was pretty happy with my shuttle BTW an X-wing entered my field of fire and since it was without shields and flew into range-band 1, I totally smoked it!

Looking at it's unpainted backside though, made me decide to redo the model and give it at least engine glow.

I'm not really sure what they could errata...I think this question getting asked so much is more people not reading or mis-reading the relevant rule:

Rules Pg 11:

Spending a Focus Token
If the attacker has a focus token, he may return it
to the action token supply to change all [focus] results
on the attack dice to [hit] results (see “Combat Phase
Example” on page 14–15).
It quite clearly states all results.
In the example on page 14-15, they again state clearly that spending the Focus token changes all Focus results. I suppose they could change the visual example to include more than one Focus result changing to a Hit result. Putting it in the FAQ would just be reiterating what is already in the rulebook, so I'm not sure what else they can really do to make this more clear.

the focus token changes ALL focus results into hits / evades

but only when you spend the token. Which means it is more hits or evades rather than an "and"

Perhaps there isn't anything. But considering how many times this question is asked, a lot of people are missing this rule for some reason.

Either it's due to a preconceived notion when reading the rules or something.

Kind sirs, in my case I really think the problem is caused by the fact that both my friend and I are Dutch and do not have English as a first language. A nuance which would be perfectly clear to a native English speaker can be less clear to others.

My apologies to people who have seen the question pop up too often and my heartfelt thanks to all who have helped clarify!

I don't think it's a problem of nuance as it is the fact that the rule is rather obscure in the rule book. I know; I read it three times before I found the note saying that it affects all dice, not just one. FWIW, it's on page 11 in regular font. They really should have emboldened it, or at least italicized it.

I don't think it's obscure at all. It clearly states 'all' results on the attack dice. Page 12 clearly states 'all' results on the defence dice for modifying to evade. I just asked my young daughter to read it and tell me how many dice I can change, and she said "all", and she doesn't even play the game. Nothing obscure there.

I think it's sometimes more a case of rushing to get into a new game system without reading the rules fully or properly. I know the first time I read the rule book, it was just a quick scan to get the basics, so I could get started and play the game, and I missed a few things then. My biggest problem is forgetting the abilities on the upgrade cards during the game. Too busy having fun to worry about the details.
